Shamsi Taghiyev

[edit]

Shamsi Taghiyev (born August 6, 1997) is an Azerbaijani filmmaker, music producer, and media professional. Recognized for his multidisciplinary approach, he has built a career spanning independent and commercial projects on a global scale. His debut documentary, Local Refugees, received critical acclaim, earning accolades at seven international film festivals and multiple grant prizes, which also utilized as educational material in the Human Relations in Multicultural Society course at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Taghiyev has composed and produced music for award-winning films, further solidifying his reputation in both the film and music industries.

Early Life and Education

[edit]

Shamsi Taghiyev was raised in a refugee family of educators affected by the Karabakh conflict. His father, Oktay Taghiyev, a Russian language teacher, introduced him to Russian and world literature acquired during his military service in Moscow. Shamsi’s education further enriched his exposure to Azerbaijani literature, while family narratives about their displacement profoundly influenced his storytelling. His grandfather, Neftun Taghiyev, an actor at the Mingechaur State Theatre who also starred in the film “Qəzəlxan”, further nurtured his interests. Although Shamsi never had the chance to meet his grandfather, who passed away before his birth, his memory lived on through annual commemorations attended by his theater colleagues. These gatherings, filled with stories about Neftun Taghiyev’s performances and life, ignited Shamsi’s passion for theater and film.

After departing his former education in high school in 9th grade, Taghiyev began studying violin at the Azerbaijan National Conservatory Music College. After graduating in 2016, he decided to shift his focus from music to film due to the limited opportunities in musicianship. Taghiyev undertook various roles on film sets, such as short drama "İki Yad Adam (2016)", "Oturacaqlar (2017)" , Sükut (2018), limited tv series Solğun Çiçəklər (2018), Anamın Kitabı(2020), and the well known Indian web series Special Ops.(2019) - encompassing a broad spectrum from production assistant to second assistant director and even roles as film score composing, sound directing, etc.

In 2018, turning point came at the 14th Shaken Aimanov Film Festival in Kazakhstan, where he met renowned Azerbaijani film director Ogtay Mirgasimov. Due to Mirgasimov's  advice, Taghiyev enrolled at the Azerbaijan State University of Culture and Arts (ASUCA/ADMIU) in 2019 to pursue formal education to advance his career. Seeking further educational opportunities abroad, he discovered the Global UGRAD program, where he was selected as an alternative finalist and later upgraded to a finalist, securing a spot to study in the USA. In 2021, he joined Minnesota State University, Mankato, to pursue film directing and the music industry. Recognizing the potential in this path, Taghiyev returned after completing the program in 2022, ultimately graduating in 2024 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Interdisciplinary Sciences of Film, Theatre, and Music. During his time at MSU, he learned from industry professionals, including Scott LeGere, whose insights from working with artists like Prince greatly influenced Taghiyev's understanding of the music and film industries.

Notably, it received a nomination for Best Smartphone Film at the Mobilee Movie Fans Festival in Japan and was selected as a Semi-Finalist at Flame First Cut 2024 and HeCare Film Festival in Canada.
