Chester A. Roscoe,[1] professionally known as Rx Papi (or simply Papi), is an American rapper and songwriter from Rochester, New York. Known for his energetic delivery and raw lyricism, Rx Papi has developed a cult following within underground hip-hop, alongside frequent collaborator RXKNephew.[1][2][3]

Early life

[edit]

Rx Papi started rapping at the age of 9. In May 2018, he was arrested on drug charges and spent 21 months in prison. After serving his sentence, he released First Day Out, a song marking his freedom, and decided to focus on music as a full-time career.[4][5]

Career

[edit]

Rx Papi first gained attention with a series of independent releases showcasing his unfiltered storytelling and hard-hitting production. He frequently collaborates with RXKNephew as part of their duo Neph & Pap.[3] Media outlets like Pitchfork also highlighted his 2021 studio album 100 Miles and Walk’in.[6]

Rx Papi gained recognition on TikTok in early 2022 with his song 12 Stout Street from Foreign Exchange, a collaboration between rapper Rx Papi and Swedish producer Gud of Sad Boys. The project, which was announced in 2021, faced delays after Papi's arrest but was released on November 19, 2021. The album features eight tracks produced by Gud, where Papi openly shares his struggles with mental health, addiction, relationships, and his life in the streets.[5][7]

In October 2024, Pitchfork ranked Foreign Exchange as the 80th best album of the 2020s so far.[8]
