Biography
[edit][1]Peter van Straten is a Dutch bassist and composer known for his contributions to the Dutch music scene. He has collaborated with notable artists and bands, including Vitesse, Powerplay, Simon Phillips, Fay Lovsky, Boudewijn de Groot, Jan Rot, Eef Albers and George Kooymans.
Early Life and Career
Van Straten began his musical journey in Amsterdam in the band Valley of Dolls, establishing himself as a bassist. In 1979, he joined the rock band Vitesse. His tenure with Vitesse was brief, as he departed to collaborate with Herman Brood, a prominent figure in Dutch rock. Van Straten's association with Brood was short-lived, leading him to return to Vitesse before eventually leaving to co-found the band Powerplay with guitarist Jan van der Meij and drummer Leon Klaasse. The band performed as an opening act for, among others, Golden Earring, U2, and the Go-Go's.
Collaborations and Session Work
Throughout his career, Van Straten has been working as a session musician, working with a diverse array of artists. His collaborations include performances and recordings with AR Kane, Nina Hagen, Billy Preston, and Eric Burdon.
Transition to Singer-Songwriter
In late early 2000, Van Straten relocated to Northern California's Sierra Nevada mountains. This change in environment inspired him to explore songwriting and vocal performance. Encouraged by musician Gerry Rafferty to perform his own material, Van Straten adopted the moniker "Street" and began composing original songs.
Formation of Street & Stone
Van Straten's creative endeavors culminated in the formation of the project Street & Stone. Collaborating with lyricist Alex Ayuli, he recorded the album "Turn," released in 2013. The album features contributions from Dutch musicians, including René van Barneveld on pedal steel and acoustic guitar, Nico Brandsen on keyboards, Wouter Planteijdt on electric guitar, and Leon Klaasse on drums.
Later Career
After 2013, Van Straten broadened his creative endeavors, collaborating with various artists and projects that explore innovative themes and media. Among his contributions is the modern dance performance 'Breathless: Catie and the Robot'. This eight-hour durational duet features dancer and choreographer Catie Cuan performing alongside an industrial robot arm, delving into themes of labor and the relationship between humans and machines. Van Straten composed part of the original soundtrack for the performance, providing a distinctive auditory layer that enhances the piece's exploration of human-robot interaction.
He also contributed to the audio design for The Everyday Robot Project, initiated by Alphabet's X (formerly known as the Moonshot Factory), aimed to develop general-purpose learning robots capable of performing everyday tasks in unstructured human environments. These robots were designed to adapt to dynamic settings, learning from their experiences to assist with various activities.
In 2021, Van Straten composed the original score for the Emmy-nominated documentary Moving San Francisco.
Continuing to work as a composer and audio designer, Van Straten remains active in projects that merge art, technology, and innovation.
