Keith Lee Grant (Born Keith H. Grant, April 23, 1954) is a director, choreographer, actor, singer, and academic. He performed in the US premiere of the musical RAGTIME[1] and the Broadway productions MARIE CHRISTINE[2] and SHOW BOAT.[3] He is the founding Artistic Director of the Harlem Repertory Theater (HRT) where he won the 2013 AUDELCO awards for Best Director/Musical and Musical Production of the Year for DREAMGIRLS.[4] He also won two AUDELCO awards for Best Director and Best Choreographer for the HRT's 2009 production of THE WIZ.[5] . Mr. Grant has been a professor in The City College of New York's Department of Theatre and Speech since 2001.[6][7]

Early Life and Education

Grant was born on the South Side of Chicago, Illinois,[8] the son of Hugh Grant (entrepreneur) and Dorothy Grant (registered nurse). He attended public schools on the South Side of Chicago (O'Keeffe Elementary School and South Shore High School). He holds a B.F.A. in Theatre from The University of Utah (1974), a certificate from the American Conservatory Theatre's Advanced Acting Program (1976), an M.F.A. from The Yale School of Drama (1982), and an M.A. from Penn State University (1984).[9][10]

Career

In addition to performing in the United States premiere of the musical RAGTIME at the Shubert Theatre in Los Angeles,[11] on Broadway in MARIE CHRISTINE,[12] and SHOW BOAT,[13] Mr. Grant also performed in several Off-Broadway and Regional Theatre productions: Don Pedro in MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING at the Indiana Repertory Theatre,[14] Oberon/Theseus in A MIDSUMMER'S NIGHT'S DREAM IN HARLEM at The Pittsburgh Public Theatre,[15] Off-Broadway he performed as Mr. Hyacinth in ABIE'S ISLAND ROSE at the Jewish Repertory Theatre,[16] Rareback Pinkerton in IN DAHOMEY at the New Federal Theatre,[17] Mr. Drumwright in REUNION at the Theatre Row Theatre,[18] and Cornelius in THE BAKER'S WIFE on Theatre Row.[19] The New York Times wrote about Mr. Grant's performance as The King of Navarre in LOVE'S LABOUR'S LOST at the Yale Repertory Theatre just before he graduated from The Yale School Of Drama, "Only two of the student actors rise to the occasion and approach their roles with authority - Keith Grant as a handsome King of Navarre and Kate Burton as his prepossessing regal opposite, the Princess of France."[20]
