Christian Peregin (born 24 November 1987) is a Maltese journalist,[1] entrepreneur, and communications strategist.[2] He is the founder of Lovin Malta,[3] a prominent digital media platform, and is recognized for his contributions to journalism, political strategy, and start-up consultancy.
Early Life and Education
[edit]Peregin was raised in Msida and later moved to Naxxar. He attended San Anton School, followed by St. Aloysius College for his sixth form education.[4] He earned a Bachelor’s degree (Hons.) in Communications from the University of Malta.
Career
[edit]Journalism
[edit]Peregin began his journalism career at Times of Malta, where he gained recognition for his investigative reporting. He received the News Journalist of the Year award at the Malta Journalism Awards in 2011,[1] won in the Print Features category in 2012,[5] and in 2013 received the E-Journalism Award while also finishing as runner-up in the Print (News) and Print (Features) categories.[6] After five years at Times of Malta, he transitioned into marketing and communications as PR Director at the branding agency BRND WGN.[7]
Lovin Malta
[edit]In 2016, Peregin founded Lovin Malta,[8] a digital media platform known for its engaging and unconventional approach to news reporting. Under his leadership, the platform became one of Malta’s most-followed news outlets, particularly within younger audience demographics.[9] In 2020, Lovin Malta won five awards at the 30th Malta Journalism Awards, including Best Online Journalism.[10]
Advocacy for Media Reform
[edit]Peregin has actively engaged in media reform efforts in Malta.[11] He led Lovin Malta’s legal challenge against partisan media stations, advocating for independent journalism and greater transparency in government spending on social media.[12] His campaign to expose the misuse of public funds for political advertising on Facebook contributed to the introduction of new guidelines by the Standards Commissioner.[13]
Political Involvement
[edit]In July 2021, Peregin resigned from Lovin Malta to join the Nationalist Party (PN) as its chief strategist for the 2022 general election,[14] citing concerns about governance and the potential emergence of a one-party state in Malta.[15] Following the election, he stepped away from politics in April 2022.[16]
Post-Politics: Start-up & PR Consultancy
[edit]After leaving politics, Peregin joined Blonde and Giant,[17] a branding and storytelling agency that assists global start-ups in raising venture capital. He served as Head of Startup Services and became a member of Silicon Valletta, a network of entrepreneurs in Malta’s tech sector.[18] Since 2023, he has worked as a freelance PR consultant.[2]
Other Projects
[edit]Peregin co-produced Daniel Holmes: A Memoir (2021), which recounts the story of a Welshman imprisoned in Malta for cannabis cultivation, addressing issues in Malta’s drug laws and prison system.[19][20]
During his time at Lovin Malta, he was also a principal writer and producer of Kaxxaturi, an investigative and satirical online series hosted by Jon Mallia. The series addressed political and social issues in Malta and contributed to crowdfunding efforts for Lovin Malta’s legal challenge against political party stations.[21][22]
He also oversaw the launch of the Lovin Social Media Awards, an annual event celebrating Malta’s leading social media influencers and digital creators, with the first event taking place in 2019, hosted by Chucky Bartolo.[23][24] This award show was followed by the Lovin Malta Music Awards later that year.[25][26]
Peregin’s work in digital media also included two personal podcast projects, the Good Faith Podcast and #CovidCalls. Both hosted by Peregin, the Good Faith Podcast featured interviews with individuals sharing unique life perspectives. #CovidCalls was an online show launched during the COVID-19 pandemic that offered real-time insights and discussions pertaining to the situation in Malta at the time.[27]
