The Canadian Group Insurance Brokers (CGIB) is a professional association in Canada dedicated to group benefits brokers and industry specialists. Established to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing, CGIB aims to enhance the expertise and service quality of its members in the employee benefits sector.
History:
- 2003: The journey began with the Mainstay Group Breakfast Meetings at Sandy's Restaurant in Thornhill, Ontario. These monthly gatherings of 5 to 15 advisors focused on sharing insights and strategies related to group benefits. As attendance grew, the meetings relocated to venues like Golden Griddle and Shopsy's to accommodate more participants.
- Expansion: With increasing interest, the group expanded beyond Thornhill, establishing breakfast meetings in Ajax, Oakville, Newmarket, Ottawa, Halifax, and Cambridge. While some of these groups thrived, others were short-lived.
- September 2008: The organization rebranded as the Group Benefit Gangs Breakfast (GBGB), transitioning to a membership-based model and planning specialized educational events. Membership surpassed 100 during this period.
- April 2009: CGIB hosted its inaugural educational event dedicated exclusively to employee benefits. These Continuing Education (CE) sessions quickly expanded to 3 to 5 events annually, totaling over 65 in-person and interactive seminars and workshops by January 2021.
- September 2011: The association was officially incorporated as Canadian Group Insurance Brokers (CGIB), enhancing its resources and organizational structure.
- July 2018: CGIB introduced access to cost-effective HR resources through a partnership with ConnectsUs HR, providing additional support to its members.
- September 2020: The organization expanded its in-person seminars to Calgary and Vancouver, reaching a broader audience across Canada.
- May 2021: Transitioning from the CVENT platform after over a decade, CGIB adopted GlueUp for event management, reflecting its commitment to technological advancement. Membership grew to over 275 members at this time.
- Fall 2021: CGIB launched the Fully-Pooled Catastrophic Hybrid Insurance Plan (CHIP), offering innovative solutions to its members.
- June 2023: Membership exceeded 350, indicating the association's ongoing growth and influence in the industry.
