Creation and gestation

[edit]

I have constructed this essay after an editor was kind enough to suggest that some of my words had sufficient value to be worth expanding, generalising, and using as the foundation blocks for an essay on the careful handling of articles about notable suicides. It was created in my user space in order to allow me some time to consolidate my thoughts before it was released into the wild, and I invited the editor who made the suggestion to consider it and edit it, bringing any editors they felt to be relevant to do the same.

People are often hesitant to edit essays created by others. That should not be the case. Wikipedia runs on the consensus based opinions of many editors, and this essay should be no different. Please edit, discuss, alter, argue or agree at will. Fiddle Faddle (talk) 10:24, 7 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Release

[edit]

After a healthy gestation period including involving several other editors in the creation, editing, stripping back and just plain reading, this essay was moved into Wikipedia: space today. Many of the editing conversations were held on user talk pages. The essay's release was delayed pending the closure of a major discussion on the migration of a large number of Suicide of Foo articles to Foo which was closed in favour of their remaining as Suicide of Foo in accordance with the policies and guidelines which obtain today. This essay (and its talk page) is not the place to discuss those policies and guidelines. It simply reflects them. Should they alter then aspects of this essay should also alter. There is scope to extend the essay, but is it beneficial?

[edit]

Without an enormous amount of effort this essay might be extended to encompass notable murders also. The topics are essentially similar in editing and article terms, though different emotions are aroused by the different mechanisms of death. It seems that a second essay along similar lines to this one would contain a large overlap of wording.

Would such an extension be judged to be beneficial? Fiddle Faddle (talk) 23:07, 5 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Attempted Suicide

[edit]

Hi all. Is there any wiki policy/guidelines on how to refer to attempted suicide? If so, could you please point me to them? Nauseous Man (talk) 20:31, 25 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
