WiR Monthly achievement initiative: September 2018

Welcome to WikiProject Women in Red (WiR)!

Our objective is to turn red links into blue ones. Our project's scope is women's representation on all language Wikipedias (biographies, women's works, women's issues, broadly construed). Did you know that, according to Humaniki, only 19.98% of the English Wikipedia's biographies are about women? Not impressed? Content gender gap is a form of systemic bias, and this is what WiR addresses. Editors of all genders are equally and warmly welcome to participate in the work of Women in Red!

Women in Red logo

The Women in Red Monthly achievement initiative which began in August is being repeated without significant changes from 1 to 30 September 2018. It is intended to encourage editors to adopt a more rewarding approach as an incentive to turn red links into blue. It is hoped it will bring about progress in both quantity and quality. See here for more information on the Wikiproject Women in Red, including how to become a member.

While the initiative will run in parallel with the other priorities for the month, it will not add any further focus and can be used to list any new biographies of women, including of course those specially targeted for the month. At this stage the initiative is limited to biographies although it might later be adapted to cover other articles about women, their works and their contributions.

How to participate

[edit]

The initiative is open to all members of Women in Red. Those who are not yet members but who would like to participate are encouraged to join by registering in the box at the top of the main page of Women in Red.

The initiative allows editors to list all the biographies they create during the month, adding them under "First new biography", "Second new biography", etc., until the greatest number of new biographies per editor is established. In addition to simply listing the article titles, the items under each subheading will include a flag template showing the nationality of each woman covered, their occupation, the name of the editor, the class of the article created (which can be upgraded as improvements are made), and the date. The initiative is designed to be easy to implement; most of the work will be handled by editors themselves as they list the articles they create. Volunteers from WiR will monitor progress and encourage editors to participate.

The participation templates and awards are based on user boxes with WiR icons and barnstars. Those below cover four of the templates to be used. Others will be added if necessary. Participants are encouraged to display the relevant templates as boxes on their user pages.

On the basis of the August results, it appears participants had little difficulty in following the rules. As the month progresses, the listings which develop on this page page will clearly show those who increasingly achieve distinction. Even one new biography is considered an achievement but it is hoped many participants will be able to contribute to the lists of two, three or more new articles. While stubs are of course accepted, all editors are encouraged to bring at least some of their new biographies up to Start or C class. At WiR, we aim for both quality and quantity.

The initiative is designed to be easy to implement as it will not upset our existing monthly editathons. Most of the work will be handled by editors themselves as they list their additions. Volunteers will monitor progress and encourage editors to participate. There will be no physical or monetary prizes but editors seem to welcome the opportunity to list their evolving achievements.
