From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(Redirected from Wikipedia:Tyop Contest)

The Tyop Contest is a contest on Wikipedia, the goal of which is to remove any spelling or grammatical errors on Wikipedia. The 1st annual Tyop Contest ran from February 1st to March 1st, and was a great success, with thousands of typos fixed! The contest was organized by Newyorkadam, who envisions a Wikipedia where typos do not exist. Jeffrd10 is co-judging the contest!

Kelly, the mascot of the Tyop Contest, is here to cheer you on!

What to Correct/What not to Correct

[edit]

Please see this page for typos to correct and this page for typos not to correct :)

Scoring

[edit]

The Tyop Contest will follow the following scoring breakdown:

  • +1 point for fixing a typo. Please see above for what a typo is/isn't. Typos do include errors such as a double 'the', 'and', 'he', etc. For example, changing "He won the the Oscar for best actor" to "He won the Oscar for best actor". Example. Correcting capitalization (e.g. "american" -> "American") is also one point.
  • +2 points for fixing possession
    • For example: The persons eyes (incorrect)/The person's eyes (correct)
  • +3 points for fixing the following typos:
    • then/than
    • lose/loose
    • weather/whether
    • threw/through
  • +5 points for fixing the following typos:
    • your/you're
    • there/their/they're
    • to/too/two

Note: Fixing the same error 10 times on the same article will get you 10 points, as stated above. However, you will only get one more point added per the next 50 corrections. So, for example, if you were to correct the same typo 60 times on the same page, you would get 11 points (the original 10 plus the added point for correcting 50 other corrections). However, if you correct the same error 59 times, you would get 10 points. This is because the same word may incorrectly be written hundreds of times on a page and a quick find-and-replace could correct all of these errors in seconds.
Please note that if you correct something worth more than one point (for example, "then/than" for three points) ten times you'd get 30 points. However, if you were to correct it 60 times, you'd get 33 points (because you get three added points for the fifty corrections).

Prizes

[edit]

Prizes* will be awarded as follows:

  1. £20 to the user who has the most points.
  2. £10 to the user who has the second most points.
  3. £6 to the user who has the third most points.

As well as a bonus:

  1. £6 to the user who fixes the same typo the most times. For example, if you change "differnt" to "different" three times and "dfferent" to "different" two times, that would be the same typo corrected five times. It is your job to keep track of this; the judges will not be keeping a log of what specific typos you fix.

* All prizes will be awarded in the form of an electronic store voucher.
