[edit]Posting a page from Anatomical Atlas
[edit]I need to find out if a particular facial nerve is in fact a part of the vagus system. Vagus is the 10th cranial nerve. I was planning to take a picture of it and post the picture in the Science Deck, but then I got a copyright popup, asking me if I own the picture, etc. It is a page from the well known American Clemente Atlas. I could not find anywhere in the book that it is copyrighted. What shall I do? AboutFace 22 (talk) 01:39, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
- @AboutFace 22: Unless it is a very old book, then it will be protected by copyright. Trying asking your question without the picture. RudolfRed (talk) 03:05, 18 November 2019 (UTC)

WIKI MOBILE pages without GPS coordinates (DESKTOP version has)?
[edit]Hello!
I CAN find GPS-coordinates on WIKI (desktop version) pages e.g. for sightseeing places like "Vienna". But I CANNOT find the coordinates on MOBILE WIKI pages on my smarthone!
If I try to switch to the desktop version there (workaround), I'm redirected automatically to the mobile page.
So what can I do to find the coordinates?
Thanx for help! OK — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.122.185.184 (talk) 08:04, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
- There are usually coordinates somewhere in the infobox at the top right. Vienna has this in both desktop and mobile. In addition, desktop has the coordinates at the top right of the whole page. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:50, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
Thanx, PrimeHunter! I can see it indeed at "Vienna" / "Wien". But in my (german) version there are still no coordinates at e.g. "Hippos" (ancient town). But now I know why they are missing: Maybe, because I use the GERMAN version or URL: de:Hippos. The english side shows them in an info box below. Good to know. But it would be fine, if German WIKI shows coordinates, in the top right corner, too. Thank you for your reply. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.122.185.184 (talk) 12:29, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
- The German Wikipedia is run independently from the English Wikipedia, so I don't think many of us would know. MoonyTheDwarf (Braden N.) (talk) 13:44, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
- Alongside that, the contents of the German Wikipedia are entirely separate from the English Wikipedia. As such, they may not have coordinates, while the english wikipedia does, or vice versa. MoonyTheDwarf (Braden N.) (talk) 13:47, 18 November 2019 (UTC)

I thought, showing GPS coordinates is a standard function of WIKI "international". Thank you so much for your precious information, especially for the link to the german helpdesk. :-) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.122.185.184 (talk) 08:39, 19 November 2019 (UTC)

- It looks like Vietnamese to me, so I suggest the help desk there: vi:Wikipedia:Giúp sử dụng Wikipedia. Google Translate says it means "The cheat dog .pixonic is a quail", so either it's nonsense, or (more likely) GT has made a complete hash of it. --ColinFine (talk) 19:50, 18 November 2019 (UTC)

Account recovery
[edit]Dear wikipedia helpdesk,
I have registered an account on Wikipedia with the username maverickws and an email address that no longer exists. How can I recover my password?
Best regards — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:470:1F21:22B:281A:E1CE:F701:A18E (talk) 19:06, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
- If you don't have access to the e-mail and you don't recall your password, then there is no way to recover the account. RudolfRed (talk) 19:10, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
- The only thing that you can do is create a new account and identify it as a successor to your old account; saying on your userpage something like "I am NewUsername and I previously used the account 'maverickws'. 331dot (talk) 19:12, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
- 331dot, Adding on to this, there may also be the possibility to WP:USURP the account. MoonyTheDwarf (Braden N.) (talk) 19:19, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
- Moonythedwarf That's true, but I believe usurpation usually requires lengthy inactivity on the account to be usurped(though I freely admit I am unfamiliar with that process). 331dot (talk) 19:26, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
- 331dot, It's something they can do in a few months if they make active use of their new account. MoonyTheDwarf (Braden N.) (talk) 19:28, 18 November 2019 (UTC)

How does that usurp work, may you provide some guidance? The account has long inactivity as it was registered in 2008 and I don't own the domain of that email address or logged in for years. Israeli Settlements - Recent change to the US position on their legality
[edit]The pages regarding Israeli settlements have a boilerplate text about them being considered illegal under international law. As the US no longer holds this view, how do I amend this standard text to reflect this without stepping on other users' toes?
Ideally, I would like to gain consensus for this change to apply to all relevant pages rather than having to repeatedly stage this discussion on every article talk page. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by AllOtherNamesWereTaken (talk • contribs) 20:02, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
- @AllOtherNamesWereTaken: You're better off discussing this at Talk:International_law_and_Israeli_settlements. The UN policy will likely not change despite the US changing its stance. But there's a section in that article about the US's legal opinion, where you can request someone to update it for you since you don't have enough edits to edit that article yourself. However, this was just an announcement - there's no indication that a legal ruling was issued, and remember that once Trump is out of office, the official policy will likely change back. Ionized water
[edit]Hello, I came across information on this on your site. The information given is incorrect. How do I improve the accuracy of this particular page?? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Natrlh20 (talk • contribs) 23:01, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Natrlh20: Hello, the most appropriate place to raise the issue would be at the article talk page. Create a new section via the tab at the top, and begin a discussion... post something along the lines of: "Statement 'X' in the page does not appear correct. 'Y' is what it should say". Please provide a WP:RS to support your proposed content. If you are confident that your information is supported by a good source, you can be bold and make the change yourself. (See WP:REFB for a guide to adding sources). If your edit is challenged (reverted, discuss it at the article talk page. Feel free to come back here for further assistance, but note this help desk will not become involved in content disputes. I.e. volunteers will not support one version over another. How to Upload A Picture
[edit]Hi Wikipedia! Earlier this year I wrote a page about a woman who was murdered. Murder of Reagan Tokes I really want to upload a picture of the victim but I cannot figure out how. The Wiki page about how to upload pics is complicated and I don't really understand it. How can I find a picture that I can put on the page? And how can I upload it to the page? Could I ask another person to upload one for me?
Best regards,
Gingerbread — Preceding unsigned comment added by LaraGingerbread (talk • contribs) 00:17, 19 November 2019 (UTC)
- @LaraGingerbread:Wikipedia is obligated to obey the law, in this case copyright law}} You may upload a picture you took with a camera or any other image to which you own the copyright. or you can upload an image which has been explicitly licensed with a compatible copyright license. You can upload a very few images under the "fair use" doctrine, which Wikipedia construes very narrowly. If you have found an image that you think meets one of these three criteria, come back here and let us know, and we can help. A picture of a person who is now deceased has at lest a chance of qualifying under fair use. -Arch dude (talk) 04:44, 19 November 2019 (UTC)
- To add to Arch dude's answer, LaraGingerbread: in order to upload an image under "fair use", you must make sure that the image, and the way it is used in Wikipedia, satisfy all the criteria in the non-free content criteria. As Arch dude says, when a person is deceased, criterion 1 ("no free equivalent") is more likely to hold; but the other nine entries must also be satisfied. --ColinFine (talk) 09:31, 19 November 2019 (UTC)
Would it be O.K for me to ask another Wiki user to find and upload one for me?
- You could try Wikipedia:Requested pictures. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 16:56, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
