Workshop objectives

This introductory workshop aims to help participants to learn Wikipedia editing skills by giving them as much opportunity as possible to practise. It is not a presentation and its focus is editing, rather than creating text. By the end of the workshop, participants should be able to:

  • edit the text and format of Wikipedia articles to improve them;
  • link articles to others;
  • add appropriate references and images;
  • engage with the Wikipedia community in discussions about article quality and content;
  • find supporting pages about policy and style.

Pre-workshop

Before the workshop, participants should:

  • Choose a user name and create a user account
  • Consider articles and topics to work on and suggest them below
  • Prepare a few paragraphs (on paper or an electronic notepad) about an article or topic to work with during the workshop
  • Add user name to the participant list.

As of 14 August 2013, the supported ("whitelisted") browsers are Firefox 15 and up; Iceweasel 10 and up; Safari 5 and up; and Chrome 19 and up.   • Wikipedia article traffic statistics – a tool for charting how many hits any given article gets, great for comparing different kinds of articles at different times, e.g., Genetics (in the school year) vs. (in the summer), or YouTube (with weekend spikes) and Simpsons (with spikes when new episodes come out). See how many people are reading your articles.
  • Manypedia – a tool for comparing a specific Wikipedia page from a language edition Wikipedia (for example, English) with its equivalent page on another language edition Wikipedia (for example, Arabic), exploiting automatic translation and additional statistics about both pages such as number of edits and editors.
  • WikiTrip – a tool for visualizing the animated evolution in time of two kinds of information about the Wikipedians who edited the selected page: their location in the world and their gender.
