Welcome!

Hello TheKMan, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

Linking to category

[edit]

If you wish to link to category, you need to use the following syntax: [[:Category:Category name]]. If you leave off the leading colon, it will add your page to that category, which can have undesirable effects :) You almost had your user page speedily deleted! Subst tags

[edit]

Hi there! I've seen you use some templates in RC patrol, and I'd like to make a friendly suggestion. Please use the subst: feature on things like the {{test-n}} messages that you leave in user talk. When you use it, it inserts the raw text ("transcludes") of the template into the talk page which in turn reduces the load on the Wikipedia servers. If you don't use subst:, every one of the templates on that page need to have their own server queries performed, and they all add up. Most vandal fighters have come to a consensus on using subst for these to help keep WP fast, thought you might want to know. The way to do this with a test3-n, for example, would be: {{subst:test3-n|Some article}} instead of {{test3-n|Some article}}. Thanks! - CHAIRBOY () 07:53, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for reminding me! I use subst tags occasionally, but sometimes forget. With a comment on my talk page, I think I'll remember from now on =) — TheKMantalk 07:59, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Heh, no problem! I still forget sometimes myself. Best regards, CHAIRBOY () 08:01, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Paul Mooney

Have a good humour barnstar for staying professional amidst all the general trollery going on at Paul Mooney. Keep the faith dude. AndyJones.

Kman- Thank YOU for the Mooney page. Just curious, what are you studying in college that you take to this so quickly? Crid 22:03, 14 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I'm studying aerospace engineering, but I have broad interests. Frankly, I didn't really know about Paul Mooney before I found the page while on vandalism patrol. I decided to work on the page because I thought he really could use a proper article (when I read that he played Negrodamus, who I did know), and I really didn't want to see the article in the hands of a page hijacker. — TheKMantalk 02:09, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Kman- You may not exactly be a PM fan, but there's a short video iview with him on the NYT site for the next few days at the Magazine page. Kman, this is the text I posted to AndyJones' talk page... "Hi AndyJones. Just a quick word with regard to the Paul Mooney (blooger) thing. I hadn't realised that there was already a discussion going on on the matter. I was using CryptoDerk's vandal fighter and saw it come up. I took one look at it and thought "nonsense!". I'll try to be a bit more thorough in my investigations before marking as Afd in the future. So, thanks for setting me straight on the matter! Much appreciated! KC. 17:58, 18 December 2005 (UTC)". I assure you it didnt even dawn on me that there was a discussion going on about it (especially not for so long!). I just saw it while on Vandalism Patrol and took one look at it and though "nn-bio, if ever I saw it!". Once again, I'll try to be more diligent in the future. Thanks! KC. 22:52, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I would have written an article about Barry Wood (cricketer). If the current article is deleted, I would like to move the article about the cricketer to the Barry Wood space as most of the internal links are for him. Capitalistroadster 10:21, 15 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, KMan. Just wanted to thank you for the revert on my user page. Take care, HorsePunchKid 2005-12-17 04:21:02Z

Thanks, and a question

[edit]

Thanks for the welcome. I did an article from the Requested Article Page, The Transfer Act of 1905 Transfer Act 1905 , Do I remove it from the Requested Section. Also, I just noticed that the article title is , Transfer Act 1905, how do I change it to be, Transfer Act of 1905. Thanks CuBiXcRaYfIsH 07:24, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again. Yes, once you have created an article, you can remove it from Requested articles (or, it would be removed eventually by another user when cleaning the page up). Also, if you think the article could still be expanded some more, by yourself or someone else, you should also list it as a Stub. There are several options for the article title. The first would be to repost all the content into the new article and replace the content of the old one with this: #REDIRECT [[Transfer Act of 1905]]. This is a perferred option when you click on "What links here" and you see that other pages link to the improperly named article, so that anyone who visits the page would automatically be redirected to the correct page. The other option is instead of replacing it with a redirect, as the original author, you have the choice of listing it for speedy deletion. Place this tag at the top of the old page: {{db|your reason for having the page deleted}}, with your reason for deleting it (mention that under policy CSD G7, author requests deletion, and that new page with correct title has been created at "Transfer Act of 1905"), and an administrator will review your request and delete the page. If you removed its listing from Requested articles, you can list it for deletion, since it is the only page that links to the old article. — TheKMantalk 18:12, 17 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I went and looked through the different stub categories for quite a while, but I can't seem to find one that fits Transfer Act of 1905. I was looking for something along the lines of natural resources or legislation. CuBiXcRaYfIsH 07:05, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
There are three possible stub categories I found, US politics {{US-poli-stub}}, US government {{US-gov-stub}}, and Law {{law-stub}} (I think the US government one would be best). Using a general stub is also fine, {{stub}}, and stub-sorters will find a category for the article or create a new one (I found these stub related pages useful: Stub sorting and Stub types). Listing an article as a stub isn't always required, but use it if you feel an article is fairly short and could really be expanded upon. See you 'round. — TheKMantalk 08:31, 18 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks and Two Questions

[edit]

To TheKMan,

Thank you for welcoming me to User Talk and explaining some of the guidelines. In general, when I am so inclined to edit a Wikipedia article, it is to correct minor mistakes in spelling, punctuation, and grammar. My apologies if I accidentally deleted some content from the Nine Network article the other day, and thank you for restoring it. I have two questions for you: 1)I am always coming across simple grammatical errors in article after article, and I can't understand how they got there. Doesn't Wikipedia have a board of editors who review each article after submision, to make sure it conforms to standard before it is posted? 2) About a year ago, I made very minor changes to an article, but after clicking on the SAVE PAGE button, most of the article disappeared and was replaced with an abbreviated and somewhat different version. The following day I received a message that I had vandalised the article by deleting and changing content. That sure put a scare in me. Any thoughts on what might have happened?

Thank you,

Simon

  • Hi again. The answer to your first question is, no, there is no official board of editors. The original incarnation of this site was Nupedia, which did not get very far because of its strict peer-review process (only 24 articles were ever completed in its 3 year run). There are several reasons for minor errors made in articles: the multitude of articles and edits can make it difficult for other editors to discover new errors, the ability for many different people to edit pages, sometimes English isn't a native language, and sometimes people just make mistakes every now and then. One responsibility of all Wikipedia users is to make corrections when they discover mistakes (and thanks for doing so). The answer to your second question is, sometimes Wikipedia editors can be overzealous in reverting edits made by anonymous users and handing out warnings. I am not exactly sure what happened in your case, but it sounds like someone else made and saved a change to the article while you were still editing it. When this happens, you are usually just sent back to the edit page (with their new changes). I'm thinking, someone may have made major changes to the article (perhaps in bad-faith), and you re-saved that page, listing you as the latest editor (then someone else came by and mistakenly gave you a warning). Feel free to post on my talk page if you have any questions or comments in the future, and remember to be BOLD in your editing. — TheKMantalk 19:06, 29 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

KlansMan

[edit]

I doubt I would be going very far out on a limb that "KMan" stands for Klans Man SirIsaacBrock 04:04, 2 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • KMan is a very simple usage, and extrapolating it to that seems a bit extreme. I'm not sure if you're inferring anything by by what you said, but let me assure you it does not refer to me or my beliefs, KMan simply refers to the fact that I am male (above the age of 18) and my first name starts with "K". — TheKMantalk 04:23, 2 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My comment in the RfA: I don't see how this has anything to do with EurekaLott. Another person's RfA is not an appropriate place to discuss this. I was talking about the back and forth between Jeff and yourself [1] [2] (perhaps I should have clarified that statement). I believe that the award that was created for the Scouting Barnstar should be a topical award. Scouting is a world-wide movement that has served youth in many countries for more than 100 years and represents the youth of the world at the United Nations.

It has been suggested that the award be given as a PUA. The first line on the PUA page reads, "This page provides a collection of awards created by individual Wikipedians." The Scouting Barnstar was created by the WikiProject Scouting.

Currently, the is a discussion going on at Wikipedia_talk:Barnstars#Removed_the_scouting_barnstar. Please comment there if you are interested.evrik

Template: US Customary

[edit]

I'm very curious as to why you edited the template User:Customary to redirect to a template which you created. Also, there's no need for a US Customary-0 template. I created the Customary template because there was a Metric template, so it's already counter to something. If you want to say you don't like Standard measurements, get the Metric template. Also, it's no accident that it said "American Units," it's shorter and works better in the template. So, I'll revert the template to it's original form. R'son-W 20:02, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well, my mistake. But there are no official names for the inch-grain-teaspoon-second system of measurement, and this system is used nowhere outside the States, so "American Measurements" works niftily. Also, quid pro quo, brother. If the terminology "U.S. Customary Measurements" (which sounds clunky) is more proper, then shouldn't the Metric userbox use the official title «Systième Internationale d'Unités»?R'son-W 22:06, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm looking for some independent confirmation, but it appears 194.60.38.10 is a proxy IP for the UK parliament? - Amgine en news 17:51, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again, I finally got around to editing the winged logo. I went ahead and did it in the .gif format (no anti-aliasing, but a .png version is also available) and uploaded it over the old one on commons. I hope you like it, but if you don't, I'm open to suggestions, or feel free to revert it. — TheKMantalk 23:53, 25 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I kinda like it. Can you make it more like Image:Goddess Relief Office.gif? Notice the cenral ring and how much smaller the bulls eye is. Also the color of the rings should be darker, to a more golden color... If posible can you adjust it like that? :)

Sure, I could do that. Also, do you want a wing style more like Image:Goddess Relief Office.gif, or is it fine as is? — TheKMantalk 14:58, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
More like it but I prefer pure white wings :) --Cool CatTalk|@ 16:39, 26 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
