New Zealand general elections

[edit]

Thanks for setting up the various categories for general elections. The job is not quite finished, though, and the following should also happen:

  • the category 'New Zealand general elections' and 'yyyy elections in New Zealand' should be removed from the election article, as you have rightfully added those categories to the new 'New Zealand general election, yyyy' category
  • the category 'yyyy in New Zealand' should be removed from the election article, as it is already in 'yyyy elections in New Zealand', i.e. one of its parent categories.

I have done these changes for the New Zealand general election, 1946 article. Will you be so kind and go back and tidy up the other categories that you have created? Schwede66 18:07, 20 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Mihai Cotovanu, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Romanian. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Template categories

[edit]

Hi, I see you've created a large number of categories such as Category:Immediate step-children/Ophiusini and populated them with templates. Was there any discussion prior to the creation of these categories ? Wikipedia categories that are for templates normally include a reference to templates in the category name; if the categories were to be renamed how do you think they should be named ? Is there an article that explains what "step-children" means in the context of taxonomy ? DexDor (talk) 08:04, 28 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@DexDor: I spend a lot of my time on here wikignoming on Special:WantedCategories and those types of taxonomy categories pop up a lot (20-30 every 500 entries or so). There were already thousands of preexisting categories in that mold (Immediate step-children) when I started (for example, Category:Immediate step-children/Tawa, which was created in 2012 and not by me), so I assumed that it was acceptable for me to create them. They were already populated when I created them; that wasn't me. I know there wasn't any discussion over these types of categories but I was just following someone else's work. If I violated any rules I apologize. spiderjerky (talk) 17:38, 28 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - that explains why you've been creating so many categories! Editors shouldn't really place a redlink category on a page (without immediately creating the category and hence turning the link blue) so I'd be wary of creating a category to fix a redlink without checking that it's an appropriate category. Another way that redlink categories can occur is if an article is restored to an earlier version and a category has been deleted/renamed (and this isn't fixed). These categories should also probably be categorized under Category:Biology templates. I've asked User:Dinoguy2 about these taxonomy templates/categories. DexDor (talk) 18:10, 28 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I noticed that you fixed a huge number of articles in the Category:West Greece tree that was moved to Category:Western Greece. I just wanted you to know that this manual cleanup work is not really necessary as User:RussBot automatically executes this task for us every morning at 9:15 am. So unless you go through all these long lists manually for having the categories fixed now instead of tomorrow morning, then you might want to save your time for other tasks requiring all our human competences... ;-)
Thanks anyway, --PanchoS (talk) 17:57, 3 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@PanchoS: Yes, I am aware of RussBot's existence, but there isn't that much that my human competency is good at, since I mostly do category work and am not good with actual articles. Also, I actually enjoy moving all those pages and categories (I don't know why, I just do), and I'm paranoid that somewhere someone is looking at an empty category. Thanks for letting me know, though, and I'll stop if you want me to. spiderjerky (talk) 18:05, 3 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No, if you like to fix them right away, don't let me stop you... I just wanted to make sure you do know about RussBot's existence, and if you do, then it's totally up to you. I just don't believe you can't help with article work at all. There are so many little to large tasks that won't be done by a bot. Cleaning up infoboxes for example (formatting, legacy or missing parameters, inconsistencies etc.). That might be extraordinary helpful. But as I said, it's up to you, and either way your work is valuable... Regards, --PanchoS (talk) 18:16, 3 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

OS sheet numbers

[edit]

Is there any particular reason you recently removed the sheet numbers from a bunch of articles citing OS 1:50 000 maps? You didn't give an edit summary, and without the sheet number it makes it harder to either a) wander into Waterstones and have a look, or b) search through one's own collection to check a building or other geographic feature really does exist. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 17:39, 17 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Ritchie333: I've been cleaning out Category:Pages with citations using unsupported parameters and |sheet= is unsupported. I really don't know anything about cartography but all of the URLs I've seen have pointed to single maps, so I thought it was unnecessary. You seem to know about the subject so I'll defer to you, but I would appreciate it if supported parameters are used. Sorry. spiderjerky (talk) 17:42, 17 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, okay. This is why it's good to do an edit summary - something like "removing unsupported parameter 'sheet'" would be a good choice. Very briefly the Ordnance Survey are the flagship map provider in the UK, and they are particularly good for geographic features such as contours, mud and sand, footpaths and things Google Maps just never seem to bother with. Traditionally, each one in the series is known as "sheets". Anyway, I think you can change each instance of "|sheet=x" to "|id=sheet x" and I've done that for the two that are on my watchlist (Dartford Crossing and Mersea Island) - do you know what other articles you fixed? We can probably do the same for all of them. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 17:52, 17 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Ritchie333:That makes sense, thanks. And I try to leave edit summaries but I edit really fast so I forget a lot. I think I fixed them all, but citation 103 on Marcellus Formation might be a little weird. spiderjerky (talk) 18:06, 17 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure about Marcellus Formation, you'll have to ask someone else I'm afraid. However, there is no deadline! I know there's lots of work to do around here, but if you edit too quickly you'll make mistakes, and if you're editing good articles (which the three mentioned so far are) in this manner, you might get told off (as any edit that stops the article being fully factually accurate and verifiable to sources on a GA could be considered disruptive). So just slow down a bit, and remember to use a good edit summary at all times. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 18:24, 17 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Cut and Paste moves

[edit]

Information icon Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give Washington Huskies volleyball team a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into Washington Huskies women's volleyball. This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge. Thank you. UW Dawgs (talk) 23:25, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@UW Dawgs: sorry about that, I had a feeling I'd get a message like this as soon as I copy pasted. won't happen again in the future, and I'll use requested moves to standardize the page as soon as I have access to my computer again. spiderjerky (talk) 23:32, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Changing Category:Jacksonville Suns players to Category:Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp players

[edit]

I've noticed you're removing Category:Jacksonville Suns players and adding Category:Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp players on player pages. None of those players have played for the "Jumbo Shrimp", but have played for the "Suns". Furthermore, the Suns category (that someone else moved) should not have been moved in the first place. Instead, a separate "Jumbo Shrimp" category should have been created for players who will play on that team when it begins play in April 2017. NatureBoyMD (talk) 19:37, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@NatureBoyMD: ah shoot by bad, I thought it was standard procedure to put players in the category for the current team name regardless. Give me a sec and I'll fix it! spiderjerky (talk) 19:38, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Category:East Tennessee State Buccaneers men's basketball players

[edit]

Why did you create this category? The men's team is known as Buccaneers, and the women's team is known as the Lady Buccaneers. It's a long established naming convention to drop the gender differentiator when there is already a clear gender identified in the team's nicknames. These edits should be undone and this category speedily deleted. Jrcla2 (talk) 14:58, 28 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Jrcla2: Well, the parent category was Category:East Tennessee State Buccaneers, not Category:East Tennessee State Buccaneers and Lady Buccaneers. Also, the page for the women's basketball team is East Tennessee State Buccaneers women's basketball, which meant there was a style conflict between using and not using Lady. I checked the official website for the school's women's basketball page and the first article I saw called them the Buccaneers, so I went with that. spiderjerky (talk) 15:35, 28 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Categories for Bible chapters

Hi, I noticed that you had created Category:Isaiah 22 to Category:Isaiah 25, etc ([2]), each of which only contain the main article and verse-number redirects to it. There is a clear precedent at Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2016_November_17#Single-article_Book_of_Isaiah_chapters not to have such categories. Rather than take anyone else's time over this, please would you empty them yourself and tag the category pages with {{db-user}}? The ones containing other pages e.g. Category:Isaiah 8 can stay.

@Kosboot: My bad, I only moved the pages because they were in Category:Wikipedia non-empty soft redirected categories. spiderjerky (talk) 02:29, 29 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Category:2018–19 in Armenian football requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Electric folk musicians

[edit]

Why have you removed this category? --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 20:47, 11 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Redrose64:It was soft-redirected to Category:British folk rock musicians. I removed it from pages that already had that category on it. spiderjerky (talk) 20:48, 11 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It would have been considerate to use an edit summary explaining your action; but in this case, no edit summary is better than the completely misleading edit summary left by SilkTork (talk · contribs) in this edit.
I see that the soft redir was due to these edits by SilkTork and I can find no discussion concerning that. Ideally, there should have been a WP:CFD; not all electric folk musicians are British. Perhaps you know of a discussion that I have not yet found. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 21:15, 11 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Redrose64: There isn't any discussion that I know of. I always mean to do edit summaries, but i edit so fast i usually forget to, my bad. I'll usually just move pages that are in Category:Wikipedia non-empty soft redirected categories and assume it's approved, which is another thing i should do better on. spiderjerky (talk) 00:20, 12 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Mouscron

[edit]

Hi Spiderjerky, I've noticed you've performed some changes stating: "removed Category:R.E. Mouscron players; added Category:Royal Excel Mouscron players using HotCat". Imho this is incorrect. R.E. Mouscron is a defunct club which is different from the new club Royal Excel Mouscron. Could you revert these, thanks! --Pelotastalk|contribs 16:32, 29 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
