Thanks for reaching out. I'd be interested in expanding this topic's pages, both piecemeal and maybe making a landing page. Let me know if your passionate about it, and we can think about what might make sense. Umass dorms

[edit]

Thank you so much for expanding the "Former buildings" section. I never even knew that there was information out there on that. I even stumbled across a valuable website. Thanks again. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 15:23, 30 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, I'll post more UMass sites if I can find any. They really have poor online organization, and over the last semester I've found they have many old neglected pages hidden on their servers. I'll keep you posted. Simtropolitan (talk) 2:30, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

Thanks

[edit]

Thank you for adding that information the the University of Massachusetts Amherst pages. Why did you add that information, as I never would've even thought of including that stuff on this project and I go there! If you want to collaborate on anything in the future or want guidance or information, I am more than willing to work with you to help you. Thanks again and have a happy holidays! Hey, I just wanted to let you know that your e-mail isn't working. I'll hold off on telling you what I wanted to invite you to something but doing it on a talk page is like telling Wikipedia intimate details of your life. Have fun in the snow today! You might be interested in this website which I just stumbled upon yesterday. I don't even think the library knows this information, which makes it all the better! By the way, good job on the building articles. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 06:10, 28 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Something of interest

[edit]

You may be interested in this. Ben and I are already ambassadors and we're always looking to recruit over there. As of right now, the rules on that are probably going to change as we just ended a weekend summit revolving around that. Essentially, you can help students fix their mistakes and hopefully get them committed to becomming editors. The one thing that I am unsure about is if we will become responsible for a class or continue mentoring a few students. Either one really doesn't involve a ton of work as the articles are usually short and the students don't normally go above and beyond what the professors are looking for. The few that do though have helped make some amazing articles such as Nuclear energy policy of the United States. It is something that you can also place on your resume should you be looking to do such a thing. Eventually, I am planning on starting a program at our school or the other four colleges which would help to increase the usage of Wikipedia on campus and I figured that becomming an online ambassador is useful towards that goal. Ben and I also just attended a summit concerning the use of Wikipedia in higher education and they stressed the need to recruit ambassadors and others to help deal with the projected increase over the years. As you are quite knowledgable in writing, I figured you would be good. You do not have to know everything to be an ambassador, but if everyone contributes a little bit, we can all make the program better. Let me know what you think about it and I would be happy to answer any questions that you might have. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 20:14, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the invite, this does sound interesting and its something I will definitely consider. I'll have to give it some thought though, I still don't have my schedule or credits all ready for the next semester. I guess my one question would be what time commitment would we typically be making each week at UMass or the Five Colleges and also are there any classes or departments in particular that we would be working with or is this focused more on the individual student contributor (moins class)? Muchos gratsiatso--Ken (talk) 00:59, 13 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
We have no idea, but it will likely be less than a few hours a week (I put in an average of less than ten minutes a week for my one student). The one variable is whether or not we will be assigned a class or just a few students. One bright side is that a TA at the school, Edward Erickson, has expressed interest in the program. I guess this is a good development and I will keep you updated as the story evolves. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 23:18, 13 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good, let me know if you hear anything.--Ken (talk) 23:35, 13 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I just spoke to Ed and our regional ambassador Max Klein and it looks like we will have Wikipedia on campus this semester! Also, did you notice that your article was promoted? Kevin Rutherford (talk) 22:23, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use File:OrchardHillObs.png

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:OrchardHillObs.png. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. (ESkog)(Talk) 18:11, 20 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (File:Louis_Warren_Ross.png)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Louis_Warren_Ross.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Melesse (talk) 05:11, 16 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Request

[edit]

My name is Walter Breitzke and I am the webmaster of a site called "Noted Nonagenarians and Centenarians" (www.genarians.com), which lists people of note who are at least 90 years old. All of the individuals listed have a picture of them which accompanies their listing, EXCEPT for ten people (which is pretty good considering there are currently 666 listings!). My question is this. I saw the illustration you created for Paolo Soleri's Wikipedia listing. It is exactly what I'm looking for. Would you be willing to do line drawings for some or all of the ten "pictureless" individuals? If so, could you please e-mail me at walter_breitzke@hotmail.com so we could discuss details, including have much you would charge? I hope this makes sense. Please let me know.

Hi. When you recently edited Edward M. Lewis, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page American (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Image rationale

[edit]

Hey, Ken. So, before we have an edit war on the UMass page, I changed it because it is used on the UMass website, and is the basis for all of our school logos. I think the one we had there is actually a very old version of it, dating from the time when Amherst was the UMass. Also, I was prodded to replace it after an editor came along and decided that it would actually be better if the state symbol was there instead. I would love to hear your opinion on this, though, so let me know what you think! Kevin Rutherford (talk) 04:46, 18 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Adrianne Wadewitz edit-a-thons in Southern New England

As you may have already heard, the Wikipedia community lost an invaluable member of the community last month. Adrianne Wadewitz was a feminist scholar of 18th-Century British literature, and a prolific editor of the site. As part of a worldwide series of tributes, New England Wikimedians, in conjunction with local institutions of higher learning, have created three edit-a-thons that will be occurring in May and June. The events are as follows:

We hope that you will be able to join us, whether you are an experienced editor or are using Wikipedia for the first time.

File permission problem with File:Tamil eelam stamp.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Tamil eelam stamp.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read the Wikipedia's image use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Kelly hi! 08:46, 12 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Winner 42: You're welcome! I've been OCD about their absence for years, it's an ongoing project. Simtropolitan (talk) 16:27, 22 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
What is your source for these images anyway? Town websites? Winner 42 Talk to me! 16:29, 22 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sometimes, but it really depends. Some town websites, using the Google protocol "Site:[townsiteaddress].org filetype:pdf" for obscure documents. When that doesn't work I'll peruse the Internet Archives for history books but because many of these local governments get butt-hurt when their official seals are listed as public domain, I almost always just credit the town and set the license to fair-use. --Simtropolitan (talk) 16:35, 22 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting! Have you ever had an incident with a town government over the licensing status of their seal? Winner 42 Talk to me! 17:02, 22 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Fortunately never here (though I have had trouble with Mods/Users contesting the legal status of PD seals) but I did email some several years back and they weren't thrilled at the prospect of disclosing them to a random student. I never got the impression they either believed that I was actually using them for Wikipedia, or knew where they had versions of these images bigger than the 100px icons on their homepages. Some don't even have clear versions of their seals because the stamps or photocopies they've used are distorted from repeated copies, but if you look in old 19th century files you can usually find renderings nicer than those they actually use. --Simtropolitan (talk) 17:20, 22 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Simtropolitan. Just thought I should let you know that the current standard size for non-free logos and crests is about 400x400 pixels or less. If you upload a larger image, please add a {{non-free reduce}} template at the time you do the upload, and a bot will come along and reduce it for you. Replaceable fair use File:GambrelRoofApiaryButterfield.png

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:GambrelRoofApiaryButterfield.png. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Diannaa (talk) 23:35, 19 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Springville, Masssachusetts

[edit]

Hello Simtropolitan,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Springville, Masssachusetts for deletion, because it seems to be vandalism or a hoax.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. ubiquity (talk) 19:02, 29 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for File:JohnGTrumpRetired.png

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:JohnGTrumpRetired.png. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information.

To add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia. For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. This message contains important information about an administrative situation on Wikipedia. It does not imply any misconduct regarding your own contributions to date.

Please carefully read this information:

Hi,

I posted a message at this talk page because I was confused about the 1940 image and the licensing. Do you remember, by chance, if the image was ever licensed - or if it was, but there were no further copyright records? Thanks so much!—CaroleHenson(talk) 19:58, 17 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Update: I looked at the main archive.org page for the source and see that there are no copyright restrictions for the quarterly - and copyright is not mentioned in the quarterly. And, I couldn't find anything anywhere that indicated that there was a copyright restriction for the image, so it looks good.—CaroleHenson(talk) 20:18, 17 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I realize some of these old sources are a bit funny when it comes to copyrights, but the Bell Labs Quarterly and many other internal technical periodicals are excellent for this kind of thing. Glad to hear its resolved. --Simtropolitan (talk) 20:49, 17 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The file File:Map of Nunavut-CH.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Orphaned map.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. ~ Rob13Talk 13:51, 27 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Valley Arena vs Valley Arena Gardens

[edit]

This could be an interesting discussion. In the case of Valley Arena (Gardens), I don't really have a preference either way. I questioned the use of piping only because of the article title, but your rationale is fine however you wish to link it. I will say that in some cases I do strongly favour using the full name of a venue as it corresponds to its WP article title: the MSG Theater is often referred to colloquially as such, but its proper name until last month was The Theater at Madison Square Garden, which is what I have been using across boxing articles. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 19:24, 31 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Mac Dreamstate: It's one of those odd details. The old timers here (Holyoke) only ever call it by the short name, but the moment I started doing research, it seemed clear 9 out of 10 times that the venue billed itself w/the full name. Yet sports writers would call it w/o gardens, nobody would refer to it by that alone either, not like The Garden in Boston or NY. I'll bet dollars to donuts if someone from that generation is here who was alive to see its demise, they may change it, but right now, we're in agreement. Also lol @ "Hulu MSG Theater". --Simtropolitan (talk) 19:41, 31 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 17:20, 13 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

North-of-Springfield service

[edit]

The way I am reading the press releases, it seems as though it will be Amtrak Shuttle trains rather than Hartford Line trains that are extended to Greenfield. Have you seen information that indicates otherwise? Pi.1415926535 (talk) 22:59, 24 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Pi.1415926535:, it was my understanding that Amtrak was the operator in the way that Valley Area Transit Co. is operator for the PVTA, but their services are not referred to as VATCo routes. The service will be put in place as part of the commuter rail service operated on the Hartford Line, rather than a typical Amtrak route like the Vermonter. I mean, feel free to make the correction of what you feel describes the service, but that is the way I read that and have heard it described. --Simtropolitan (talk) 01:10, 25 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Pi.1415926535:, was just rereading my two sources [1] [2]- then I saw this [3], which is much clearer. My mistake, it seems to be an Amtrak Shuttle train. Was not entirely convinced this would be called that from the way the others described it.--Simtropolitan (talk) 02:17, 25 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for taking a closer look! The press coverage is rather confusing and inconsistent. What I've heard privately seems to be that Amtrak is already contractually allowed to provide interstate service in Massachusetts while the Hartford Line operator is not (since SPG is the only MA station on the Hartford Line). In any case, hopefully more details will come about soon. Cheers, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 07:10, 26 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Massachusetts State Seal Font

[edit]

I would like to know what font was used for the state seal and where I can download it?

Officially speaking, there is none, or at least none of the employees I've spoken with at different agencies in the past know what it is any longer. For the outer ring you can get pretty close to the same effect with Cooper BT Medium (same type family as Cooper Black), though the Æ ligature and E's won't match. As for the banner type, it's traced from the original artist's lettering, but Mark Simonson's Goldenbook Regular in all caps will give you a similar effect. Hope this is useful. --Simtropolitan (talk) 14:33, 14 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. Hello. Help deleted image caption for article Maureen Wroblewitz. Thanks you. Pv sindhu (talk) 03:37, 31 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Pv sindhu: Based on the article history, it looks like there never was a caption for this article when it did have an image, so I don't think there's anything I can delete that would be helpful.--Simtropolitan (talk) 07:26, 31 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon Regarding your reversion to this article and the following edit summary, "(reversed change; MOS:INFOBOXFLAG does allow use of flags in cities and other populated places; do agree however showing flags of previous countries does detract from subject)". Although MOS:INFOBOXFLAG does say Where one article covers both human and physical geographic subjects (e.g., Manhattan, which covers both the borough of New York City and the island of the same name), or where the status of the territory is subject to a political dispute, the consensus of editors at that article will determine whether flag use in the infobox is preferred or not., I am unable to locate the debate in which it was decided by consensus that their use is preferred in this "settlement". Having reverted the article once again, would you please explain why you feel it should remain different from the huge majority of settlement, and similar, articles?

My Favourite Account  😊 18:18, 28 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You said so yourself that it was fine. The MOS states a human geographic unit may have flags in the infobox as they relate to geography. If people haven't added them to others, that's certainly an open invitation to do so.--Simtropolitan (talk) 18:21, 28 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:William G Morgan presented with Springfield College sweater.png

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:William G Morgan presented with Springfield College sweater.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Los Angeles Infobox flags

[edit]

Hi. While you are correct, there are two things to note: MOS is not madatory and the guideline itself uses the word "may" not must, and it’s in italics to emphasise this. As well as this, it should also be noted that on most major city articles (New York City, Washington, D.C. etc.) the flags aren’t used, which shows a standard across major US city articles that can’t be ignored. IWI (chat) 08:00, 28 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • That may well be, but flags not being used is a rather recent development due to a user who previously made it their sole priority to remove them. In time that will be rectified to reflect the MOS. Thank you for your concern. --Simtropolitan (talk) 14:35, 28 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Things shouldn’t be changed purely because they are in the MOS. Like I said, the guideline states that flags may be used. MOS is not mandatory anyway. I feel the infobox looks clearer without them, and there is unnecessary attention to those parameters as a result. Furthermore, I don’t see that it adds to the article in any useful way. IWI (chat) 15:54, 28 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That is your opinion, mine is that it provides due emphasis to the cultural identity of populated places. The MOS is generally accepted as the standard that editors should attempt to follow, while not mandatory, if you feel it should be changed, that needs to be part of a greater discussion.--Simtropolitan (talk) 16:03, 28 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

In any case, I’ve opened an RFC at the relevant "United States" Wikiproject’s talk page. I should repeat, my main emphasis is the use of the word "may". IWI (chat) 16:19, 28 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It "may" not be appropriate for an article like Caledonia, Missouri; when referring to large international cities like NY, or Los Angeles, if you feel those are not appropriate as such, what would your definition of proper examples of such usage be?--Simtropolitan (talk) 16:31, 28 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I don’t know, most international countries outside of the US never use flags in the infoboxes. In my opunion, it isn’t appropriate ever. It is optional and perhaps subject to local consensus. Why do you think it isn’t appropriate for smaller cities' articles, but is for larger ones (I don’t understand your logic)? IWI (chat) 00:42, 1 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]
With rare exception villages and smaller municipalities don't have significant national or international institutions. Generally in cities with such ties it adds due weight to their nationality and subdivisions, as these symbols are used in a direct administrative capacity. For example, New York is sometimes described as the "capital of the world" (not a handle I personally admire), and is a locale where state, federal, and global authorities maintain direct presences there. The same is true of many larger American cities to a degree, and a place like Sao Paulo. It doesn't diminish from the article in a tangible way and allows visitors to view associated heraldry. Personally if I would change anything it would be to allow users to view these in full in the way that it appears someone has in the Sao Paulo or Vienna. They're germane to the topic and hardly un-encyclopedic– unless they don't apply and are outright false, WP:IDON'TLIKEIT is the consistent argument I see in users' crusades for removing them.--Simtropolitan (talk) 18:06, 2 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Belle Skinner, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Klan (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Holyoke articles

[edit]

Hi. I tend to edit articles related to the ethnic history of Baltimore and I've noticed your work on the ethnic history of Holyoke and elsewhere in New England. Great work! I just wanted to thank you for the effort and encourage you to keep it up. :D Be well. Bohemian Baltimore (talk) 05:29, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Bohemian Baltimore: Why thank you and you're welcome, I appreciate that. Your own work served as a model for me, particularly in the challenge of establishing notability here. Mine started from frustration hearing old folks complain about Puerto Rican neighbors speaking Spanish— while our non-English press is something many non-Hispanics had long forgotten. Anything I can do to keep a bring out our podunk city's worldliness and maybe instill empathy along the way. Cheers, you as well! --Simtropolitan (talk) 15:56, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

New England French

[edit]

I realized after citing each state individually for French speakers, that one could just select the New England Census Division in American Factfinder.[1] However, this would only work for the total number of French speakers, not for the map which shows the percentage by county, so I've left the refs as is.

Thank you, I realize too that Factfinder is going to be obsolete in a few months but haven't completely familiarized myself with its successor. I may go back and change that once I do, but I'm hoping the Census has a way to grandfather in the old citation links. Cheers --Simtropolitan (talk) 12:47, 13 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I think Factfinder will stay up for a while, just without adding new data, so there will be time to update. --Ken Gallager (talk) 00:02, 15 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

"Paris of America"

[edit]

Well, that's my bad, I was looking at the section specifically about nicknames, somehow I totally missed that it is sourced right in the lead. Interestingly, Paris of America currently redirects to the article on Chicago. Perhaps it should be made a dab page? Beeblebrox (talk) 19:53, 23 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Actually I just went ahead and retargeted the redirect. Beeblebrox (talk) 20:05, 23 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate that but actually there's a disambiguation page called Paris of the West which neatly covers this as well as similar handles for Montreal and San Francisco, it might make more sense to have it redirect there and then Chicago can be added iff there are any claims made to that moniker in the future. I'm going to do a redirect to that DAB but if you don't feel this is adequate that can be changed back. Thanks for pointing that out. --Simtropolitan (talk) 20:13, 23 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@ThatMontrealIP: You're welcome! Thank you for reorganizing it into sections! I'd been interested in her work for a while (admittedly only knowing what I knew through documentaries on her husband). That's great to hear, and mostly I couldn't tell you, it all just came together. The Boston Globe articles come from LexisNexis (it helps to have friends in university), but everything else is just persistence. When you do a Google search, sometimes things like searching "site:.gov" or .org, or similar help get unique entries. Also the Internet Archive is a real wealth of information hidden in the open, but most of it, is finding common mispellings and Googling those, and patience. --Simtropolitan (talk) 00:56, 16 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hey thanks! Competence born only from these efforts, to not let her be defined solely by her death. Barring embellishments about her parents and art style, I've taken the article about as far as most can probably take it without going into NYC and talking to acquaintances, rummaging through archives of her material that's not yet digitized. Try following protocol for a change

@Dilidor: They concern your edits, it's within the purview of user discussion, And again, offer constructive criticism- I would suggest reviewing WP:DISCUSSION, Cheers --Simtropolitan (talk) 17:22, 26 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Simtropolitan: This discussion concerns your original research on a specific article. The discussion needs to be open to any editor interested in that article—but if you hide the discussion on an editor's talk page, no other editor will be aware of it. Conduct it where it belongs so that others can join in! But your flagrant flaunting of protocol on revert warring does not make me hopeful that you will follow protocol on this simple expedient, either. @Lightburst: Unfortunately that may be your best bet. French ancestry map

[edit]

Thank you for your explanations, I understand your points, but why do you think that the same person would report French and French Canadian at the same time, or French and Quebecois at the same time? It makes little sense to me, so I doubt such cases were numerous. This is why I think that, actually, not adding up these categories skewes the percentages more. Also in case of Quebec obviously a huge number of people with French ancestry in this province identify as "Canadians" in the census, that's why I think the "French mother tongue" category is more informative in this case. Other provinces are predominantly English-speaking and hence "ethnicity" is more relevant there (the number of people declaring French ethnicity is higher than those declaring French mother tongue in English-dominated provinces) - but since your map had >10% as the highest treshold anyway, Quebec's case is not an issue. As for the U.S., perhaps we can use 1980 census instead of 1990? The 1980 census did not yet have the "Acadian/Cajun" category, just French and French-Canadian. So the number of people reporting two or three types of French at the same time, was surely lower in 1980.
Here is the link to 1980 census data: https://www.census.gov/population/www/censusdata/pc80-s1-10.html
Best regards, Domen (talk) 22:17, 9 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Actually the reason why I edited your map is because I was creating my own map of French ancestry in the USA and Canada (part of my series, as you probably noticed I've made such maps for several other ethnicities before, using the same blank map). Just when I finished my map and tried to upload it to Wikipedia, I got a message that such file already exists - that's how I found your map. :)
Anyway, in my map I planned to use 1980 census for the U.S., mainly because there are just two, not three, "French" categories in that census (Cajun/Acadian is not listed).
Here are the 1980 census figures for the USA for comparison:

Best regards, Domen (talk) 22:55, 9 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It is bad statistics to mix responses when you don't know how they overlap, plain and simple. Using "French" alone we know to be 1 response to 1 person, rather than more responses than people. From personal experience, I would respond that way, having both French Canadian and French ancestry, it's not uncommon. But "original research" aside- let's put it like this. In the 1990 data, you have more people responding as "French", in Louisiana and Maine, than Cajun or French-Canadian combined. Yet at the height of French immigration, from a 1913 survey, you have only 1% of New Orleans residents, a hub for immigrants, identifying as French. The same survey, will conversely show a ratio of 200-to-1 (6,660 to 34) of French-Canadians to French in Lewiston, Maine, the city with the largest French speaking population in the US. What I am saying here is the "definition" of French used in the Census was broadened by the interpretation of the respondent. The most we can do is try to correct this by not counting more responses than people.
Yet even if we account for 80 years of difference, French immigration decreased, but in the 1990 responses you have more responses for "French" ancestry than "Acadian/Cajun" and "French Canadian" combined for both states. The two states with the largest portion of those other populations, neither of which is known to have had a large "French-French" population during the height of that demographics' immigration. I am fine with having separate maps that can be added to the article, but you will not get better data adding those responses. A map combining responses no longer shows people, it shows responses, even if you believe it skews the data, we can say it is 1:1. Adding this will include those who wrote both for specificity, while having just "French" will cover clearly a large portion of people from the above anecdote, certainly a large portion of both populations. The map is titled "French_ancestry_in_the_USA_and_Canada.svg", if you want to make one as well for "French-Canadian_ancestry_in_the_USA_and_Canada.svg", and another for "Acadian-Cajun_ancestry_in_the_USA_and_Canada.svg", I welcome it. But when you start adding these numbers, you're doing so against the methods the Census used and the making assumptions not demonstrable in the data.--Simtropolitan (talk) 23:13, 9 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, how about this - if we use the 1980 census, and just French percentages (wthout mixing responses), we will get:

State Percent
Over 10%
Vermont 28.3%
New Hampshire 25.8%
Maine 23.7%
Louisiana 22.2%
Rhode Island 18.9%
Massachusetts 14.6%
Connecticut 10.5%
7% to 10%:
Michigan 9.4%
Washington 7.6%
Oregon 7.4%
Minnesota 7.4%
5% to 7%:
Wisconsin 6.9%
Montana 6.9%
Nevada 6.8%
Missouri 6.9%
Colorado 6.1%
Kansas 6.0%
Alaska 5.8%
Idaho 5.8%
Wyoming 5.7%
Arizona 5.7%
California 5.5%
North Dakota 5.2%
Iowa 5.2%
Oklahoma 5.0%
Florida 5.0%
4% to 5%:
New York 4.8%
Indiana 4.9%
Nebraska 4.8%
Texas 4.7%
South Dakota 4.4%
Ohio 4.3%
Illinois 4.3%
Utah 4.1%
3% to 4%:
Delaware 3.8%
Maryland 3.7%
New Mexico 3.7%
Mississippi 3.8%
Virginia 3.6%
Arkansas 3.6%
2% to 3%:
New Jersey 2.9%
Kentucky 2.9%
Pennsylvania 2.8%
Hawaii 2.7%
South Carolina 2.7%
West Virginia 2.7%
Georgia 2.6%
Alabama 2.6%
Tennessee 2.5%
North Carolina 2.3%
Below 2%:
District Columbia 1.6%

Maybe this solution would be ideal. And would underline the Louisiana Purchase quite well, it seems.

EDIT: Never mind, it seems the difference compared to your current version would be insignificant.

Best regards, Domen (talk) 23:18, 9 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Domen von Wielkopolska:Franco-Americans are messy demographic statistically speaking. I do appreciate your search for a good catch-all with this. I only say what I say because I know that the response "French", won't only count "French from France" people, and that their numbers in certain states seem incongruous with history if a large portion of the respondents weren't some of these other Acadian/Canadian/Cajun groups. In the New England French (dialect) article, I did add a hidden map showing population totals instead of just percentages. Granted they won't capture those who simply responded French, but would you be willing to compromise with something similar? That way readers could see the distinct pockets in the country of those other population names.--Simtropolitan (talk) 23:27, 9 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
OK I agree. And you did a good job with your map. Perhaps another one could be made for Cajun/Acadian, especially that both U.S. and Canadian censuses include this category. Domen (talk) 23:43, 9 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Streetcar maps

[edit]

I'm currently working on a map of all the streetcar systems in Massachusetts, with the aim of exporting to KML for use with {{Attached KML}}. Most of the state is complete, but I'm having a hard time with the Springfield, Holyoke, Northampton, and Greenfield systems. You're clearly the expert on those around here; do you know of any good maps or route descriptions that I could use? Thanks, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 17:17, 17 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks @Pi.1415926535:. I try to draw more attention to them in hopes of getting enthusiasts to start an unlikely heritage line someday. Unfortunately I'm mostly familiar with just Holyoke/Amherst. It won't give you stops along routes but this map File:Map_of_the_Street_Railways_of_the_State_of_Massachusetts,_1913.jpeg is one of the more complete ones, if only because most expansion was before the First World War. There's not a lot of ephemera floating around with the smaller stops though. There might also be some in the Electric Railway Journal like this example - "Zone Fares Successful in Holyoke". April 10, 1920. {{cite magazine}}: Cite magazine requires |magazine= (help), but that's on the chance they had a feature article. There's some birdseye maps like "Connecticut Valley Electric Transit", but again, no differentiation between lines or stops. That's all I've got unfortunately. If I find anything else going forward, I'll let you know. --Simtropolitan (talk) 18:38, 17 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, that zone map and the birdseye map are extremely helpful. I'll upload them to Commons when I get a chance. I'm focused on the alignments and operating companies; in most cases, stops and even service patterns are too poorly documented to bother with. (Even figuring out the A Branch stops prior to the 1969 closure - some of which had actual platforms - is next to impossible.) Here is a typical section of the current form. The first iteration is just all alignments and which company operated it in 1915; a later GIS version will have a data table with open, close, and operating company by year. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 20:28, 17 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome, being from the area in your example, I think that looks great. Can't wait to see the finished product. --Simtropolitan (talk) 20:33, 17 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Connecticut state flag

[edit]

Hello,

I noticed you were the last to edit the Connecticut state flag, I wondered if you had the time to correct it further. It might need to be done away with and started again. The current version is a bit of a mess. The shield is off center, the grapes are floating without stems, the silver is missing from the shield, the grapevine "islands" should be green and the text in the banner should be blue I believe. You had shown at interest at some point but understand if that's more of an undertaking than you'd want to commit to.

This is good version here: https://www.united-states-flag.com/connecticut-flag-6x10-feet-nylon.html Though I'm not sure on the colors. They have the cable colors set but I have yet to be able to find a way to translate those to HEX or CMYK or RGB...

Enzwell (talk) 15:20, 14 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Enzwell: Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Yes, I tried to minimally fix the grapes, as at one point their shadowing was offset and floating against the background. I would be glad to revisit this as I feel improved state heraldry renditions can be a point of pride despite their lack of emphasis in the last century. I'm not sure about the colors either but I'll see what I can do in the near future. Cheers --Simtropolitan (talk) 03:31, 17 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure if you're finished or not with the CT flag but I just noticed the work you've done and the difference is night and day imo, it looks so much better. Amazing work and thank you. Enzwell (talk) 14:57, 26 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • You're welcome. I'd say at least for now. Though it is slightly assymetrical, whoever created the original did a much better job capturing the shield's unique shape. Otherwise there aren't any other pieces I think I would change. Cheers --Simtropolitan (talk) 18:33, 7 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Colleges in Metropolitan Boston Graphic

[edit]

Hello,

I saw that you were the latest individual to update the map of Boston area colleges back in 2021. I noticed that it could use some further updates to reflect the current institutions. I would make the edits myself, but I’m not particularly graphically inclined - there are a decent amount of edits so absolutely no pressure to take this on if it would be too much work. If you are interested, below are the points that need updated:

Name Changes

-Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology is now William James College -Lasell College is now Lasell University -Simmons College is now Simmons University (the residential campus is also currently shaded dark blue while the academic campus is shaded orange - both should be the same color)

Closures -Andover Newton Theological School has closed and can be removed -New England Institute of Art has closed and can be removed -Bay State College has closed and can be removed -Boston Conservatory has closed and can be shaded in the color of Berklee College of Music -Pine Manor College has closed and can be shaded in the color for Boston College -Episcopal Divinity School has closed and can be shaded in the color for Lesley University -School of the MFA has closed and can be shaded in the color for Tufts University

Moves -Hebrew College has moved to 1860 Washington Street, Newton, MA 02466 -Cambridge College has moved to 500 Rutherford Avenue, Boston, MA 02129

Notice

The file File:Mayor William Hamilton (Holyoke, Massachusetts).jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

WP:DECORATIVE non-free use in List of mayors of Holyoke, Massachusetts which fails WP:NFCC#1, WP:NFCC#8 and WP:NFLISTS. Even though the subject of the photo is deceased, non-free images are pretty much never allowed to illustrate individual entries in either stand-alone list articles or lists embedded into other articles. If someone feels that the subject is Wikipedia notable enough for a stand-alone article to be written about him and wants to use the image there, then that could possibly be justified under Wikipedia's non-free content use policy, but the particular use in this particular article can't.

-- Marchjuly (talk) 05:30, 3 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The above also applies to File:ErnestProulx Holyoke.png, File:Thomas Monahan.png and File:WmMHart.png. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:32, 3 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hermanns Soehne Association Hall (Dr Mother Elouise Franklin Church)

[edit]

Hi Simtropolitan, looking at this page for some research associated with a college course of mine and you detail that "it was renovated in 1973 by the New Hope Church of God in Christ, since rededicated Dr. Mother Elouise Franklin Church". As the source you cited your own work. Could you tell me more about that - I'm interested in the history of this building and want to know how you came about the renovation and rededication of this site. Jeaners (talk) 01:12, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Jeaners:, I'm sorry if this is far too late but you're partially correct. The building was indeed renovated then, but I did not cite my own work. That "own work" is to say that I took the picture you linked. If you look at the History of the Germans in Holyoke, Massachusetts, citation 39, you see my source is Harper, Wyatt E. (1973). The Story of Holyoke. Centennial Committee of the City of Holyoke. p. 206. OCLC 8060402.. Unfortunately this is a very general source. You may be able to find more in NewsBank (www.genealogybank.com) in local newspapers. Or even by reaching out to libraries in Germany that have saved old Holyoke German newspapers, but unfortunately much of the early history of that community has been lost to time, in part due to anti-German sentiment after the World Wars. Best of luck in your search and let me know if you have any other questions, I am always happy to help people unearth more of Holyoke's history. -Simtropolitan (talk) 14:10, 20 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind Regards,
