Hi Rusty, i've made some edits to pages but marked some of them as minor edits before understanding exactly what this meant, apologies, I'm fairly new to this. Any tips/guidance you can provide on what not to do would be greatly appreciated. --Maznet1 (talk) 22:09, 7 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Maznet1: I reviewed your edits; sometimes, adding links to other websites isn't always the best option. If the information in the external website could be added to the article, try to do that. Mistakes are perfectly fine when you're starting out here; I made the same mistake regarding minor edits when I was new here.
- We have an introduction you could look at; but regardless don't be afraid to make mistakes; it's part of learning.
- Happy editing, and you can always ask me if you have more questions. Rusty 🐈 14:26, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you Rusty. Should I copy and paste large amounts of relevant information from other websites to Wikipedia, won't Google see this as duplicate content? Maznet1 (talk) 10:44, 11 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Maznet1: Well, not copying and pasting, since content on other website may be copyrighted. Try to summarize the text in your own words. Rusty 🐈 14:00, 11 August 2024 (UTC)

Question from Altamash422 (03:32, 12 August 2024)
[edit]Dear Sir/Madam,
I hope this message finds you well. I am reaching out to inquire about creating a Wikipedia page for my website, Cinema Guru, which I launched three months ago. As the owner and primary author of the site, I am eager to share the purpose and content of Cinema Guru with a broader audience through this platform.
Could you kindly advise whether I am eligible to create this page?Thank you for your time and consideration.
Warm regards, Altamash Shaikh Wikipedia Contributor Website URL: https://www.cinemaguru.in --Altamash422 (talk) 03:32, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Altamash422: I must advise you, Wikipedia is not the place for promoting or sharing your content. As it was said on your talk page, Cinema Guru does not meet the criteria for inclusion for websites. There is nothing you can do to make it meet these criteria, as one of them is being discussed in what we call "reliable sources", like a globally known newspaper.
- Of course you can try to create the page, but the question then would be whether it would be retained and accepted as an article.
- Thanks. Rusty 🐈 14:12, 12 August 2024 (UTC)

[edit]I want aad Box Office section for Bad Newz {url: http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Bad_Newz_(film)} And Update box office data
I want to add " Vicky Kaushal's film "Bad Newz" has Released theatrically on July 19, 2024, the film has grossed over ₹108.25 crore (US$12.4 million) worldwide. The film had a strong start with a first day collection of ₹8.3 crore and went on to earn ₹44.1 crore over its first weekend. "

So Can I Edit This Info And source -- please check Altamash422 (talk) 13:10, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Altamash422: I would not recommend linking to your website if there are better sources. In one of the links you tried to post on Wikipedia, there was a disclaimer about how you cannot be responsible for the authenticity of the data. We don't use sources that are unreliable. What sources does your website gather information from? Rusty 🐈 14:16, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
- At Cinema Guru, we gather information from a variety of sources, including X/Twitter, Instagram, and news articles, to ensure our content is both current and comprehensive. Each article undergoes thorough research and verification before it is published on our website, ensuring that the information we share is accurate and well-informed.My website gather information from X/Twitter, Instagram and News Article

- Dear mentor I'm also create send box of my website you can check User:Altamash422/sandbox Altamash422 (talk) 14:40, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Altamash422: Twitter and Instagram are not considered reliable sources (even if they are the official account) on Wikipedia because they are user-generated. I would recommend you stop trying to link to your website on Wikipedia; you've already tried and failed.
- Perhaps take a break from writing about your website, and go do something like fixing spelling errors.
- I read your sandbox; it feels a tad promotional. Rusty 🐈 14:42, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
- Ok Thanks For Guiding me I'm Focus on fixing spelling errors on wikipedia now, but I'll try again after a week linking my website
- Ok Altamash422 (talk) 14:48, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
- Rusty, I gather you have volunteered to mentor Altamash422. As such, you should know that he has already been blocked once for repeatedly referencing his own blog (WP:REFSPAM). Question from Altamash422 (15:23, 12 August 2024)
[edit]Dear Mentor,
I have a question regarding the benefits of editing, correcting, and sharing information. Could you please explain how these practices contribute to the accuracy and reliability of information? I am interested in understanding their significance in maintaining high-quality content and ensuring that information is both credible and useful to the audience.
Thank you. --Altamash422 (talk) 15:23, 12 August 2024 (UTC)

Tech News: 2024-33
[edit]Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Feature news
- AbuseFilter editors and maintainers can now make a CAPTCHA show if a filter matches an edit. This allows communities to quickly respond to spamming by automated bots. [1]
- Stewards can now specify if global blocks should prevent account creation. Before this change by the Trust and Safety Product Team, all global blocks would prevent account creation. This will allow stewards to reduce the unintended side-effects of global blocks on IP addresses.
Project updates
- Nominations are open on Wikitech for new members to refresh the Toolforge standards committee. The committee oversees the Toolforge Right to fork policy and Abandoned tool policy among other duties. Nominations will remain open until at least 2024-08-26.
- One new wiki has been created: a Wikipedia in West Coast Bajau (

- @Tippedthread1: You can start an article at Wikipedia:Articles for Creation. However, it must follow our policies and guidelines. I don't know what you put on the page "dad's law the unwritten rule's" but I'm sure it didn't follow some policy or guideline. Rusty 🐈 14:23, 15 August 2024 (UTC)

Tech News: 2024-34
[edit]Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Feature news
- Editors who want to re-use references but with different details such as page numbers, will be able to do so by the end of 2024, using a new sub-referencing feature. You can read more about the project and how to test the prototype.
- Editors using tracking categories to identify which pages use specific extensions may notice that six of the categories have been renamed to make them more easily understood and consistent. These categories are automatically added to pages that use specialized MediaWiki extensions. The affected names are for: DynamicPageList, Kartographer, Phonos, RSS, Score, WikiHiero. Wikis that have created the category locally should rename their local creation to match. Thanks to Pppery for these improvements. [3]
- Technical volunteers who edit modules and want to get a list of the categories used on a page, can now do so using the
categories
property ofmw.title objects
. This enables wikis to configure workflows such as category-specific edit notices. Thanks to SD001 for these improvements. [4][5]
Bugs status
- Your help is needed to check if any pages need to be moved or deleted. A maintenance script was run to clean up unreachable pages (due to Unicode issues or introduction of new namespaces/namespace aliases). The script tried to find appropriate names for the pages (e.g. by following the Unicode changes or by moving pages whose titles on Wikipedia start with
Talk:WP:
so that their titles start withWikipedia talk:
), but it may have failed for some pages, and moved them to Special:PrefixIndex/T195546/ instead. Your community should check if any pages are listed there, and move them to the correct titles, or delete them if they are no longer needed. A full log (including pages for which appropriate names could be found) is available in phab:P67388. - Editors who volunteer as mentors to newcomers on their wiki are once again able to access lists of potential mentees who they can connect with to offer help and guidance. This functionality was restored thanks to a bug fix. Thank you to Mbch331 for filing the bug report. You can read about that, and 18 other community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week.
Project updates
- The application deadline for the Product & Technology Advisory Council (PTAC) has been extended to September 16. Members will help by providing advice to Foundation Product and Technology leadership on short and long term plans, on complex strategic problems, and help to get feedback from more contributors and technical communities. Selected members should expect to spend roughly 5 hours per month for the Council, during the one year pilot. Please consider applying, and spread the word to volunteers you think would make a positive contribution to the committee.

New page reviewer granted
[edit]Hi Rusty Cat, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the new page reviewer user right to your account. This means you now have access to the page curation tools and can start patrolling pages from the new pages feed. If you asked for this at requests for permissions, please check back there to see if your access is time-limited or if there are other comments.
This is a good time to re-acquaint yourself with the guidance at Wikipedia:New pages patrol. Before you get started, please take the time to:
- Add Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Reviewers to your watchlist to follow NPP-related discussions
- If you use Twinkle, configure it to log your CSDs and PRODs
- If you can read any languages other than English, add yourself to the list of reviewers with language proficiencies
You can find a list of other useful links and tools for patrollers at Wikipedia:New pages patrol/Resources. If you are ever unsure what to do, ask your fellow patrollers or just leave the page for someone else to review – you're not alone! signed, Rosguill talk 18:12, 20 August 2024 (UTC)

[edit]Hi rusty i'm Layla do you want to be friends with me Aquaphina13 (talk) 18:55, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Layla, I'm afraid you're on the wrong platform. This is Wikipedia, not Twitter/X or Facebook or another social medium. You could make friends there if you like, but we generally don't socialize or make friends here if it's not relevant to the encyclopedia (Wikipedia).
- With that out of the way, do you have questions about Wikipedia? Rusty 🐈 20:30, 22 August 2024 (UTC)

[edit]i need help. what does GFDL mean and stand for? --Aquaphina13 (talk) 02:46, 24 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Aquaphina13: The GFDL stands for GNU Free Documentation License, and it's one of the copyright licenses that Wikipedia text is released under. You don't need to worry much about this, other than the fact that it allows contributions to be republished anywhere, as long as people know where it came from (Wikipedia/you).
- Do you have another question? Rusty 🐈 03:02, 24 August 2024 (UTC)

Feature news
- Administrators can now test the temporary accounts feature on test2wiki. This was done to allow cross-wiki testing of temporary accounts, for when temporary accounts switch between projects. The feature was enabled on testwiki a few weeks ago. No further temporary account deployments are scheduled yet. Temporary Accounts is a project to create a new type of user account that replaces IP addresses of unregistered editors which are no longer made public. Please share your opinions and questions on the project talk page.
- Later this week, editors at wikis that use FlaggedRevs (also known as "Pending Changes") may notice that the indicators at the top of articles have changed. This change makes the system more consistent with the rest of the MediaWiki interface. [6]
Bugs status
- Editors who use the 2010 wikitext editor, and use the Character Insert buttons, will no longer experience problems with the buttons adding content into the edit-summary instead of the edit-window. You can read more about that, and 26 other community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week.
Project updates
- Please review and vote on Focus Areas, which are groups of wishes that share a problem. Focus Areas were created for the newly reopened Community Wishlist, which is now open year-round for submissions. The first batch of focus areas are specific to moderator workflows, around welcoming newcomers, minimizing repetitive tasks, and prioritizing tasks. Once volunteers have reviewed and voted on focus areas, the Foundation will then review and select focus areas for prioritization.
- Do you have a project and are willing to provide a three (3) month mentorship for an intern? Outreachy is a twice a year program for people to participate in a paid internship that will start in December 2024 and end in early March 2025, and they need mentors and projects to work on. Projects can be focused on coding or non-coding (design, documentation, translation, research). See the Outreachy page for more details, and a list of past projects since 2013.

Question from Quirek the Bird (21:10, 29 August 2024)
[edit]Hello! How can I generate my own wiki page? --Quirek the Bird (talk) 21:10, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Quirek the Bird: Hello! Welcome to Wikipedia. Sorry, but I'm afraid that that's not possible. Wikipedia is not meant for ordinary people. In all of the articles we have about people, those people have at least won a really famous award or at least been in a well-known newspaper.
- But if you intend to improve existing Wikipedia article, you may to provide basic information about yourself so your fellow editors get to know you!
- Rusty 🐈 23:40, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- Oh... I must have miscommunicated. I don't plan on making a page for *myself* (that is, while I am still insignificant) but rather, can I make a new wiki page on a different topic, like a charity? 2600:1007:A011:970:1653:8F9A:5201:8B9E (talk) 00:07, 30 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Quirek the Bird: Certainly. A draft article can be started through a process known as Articles for Creation. Generally, a subject is eligible for its own article when independent sources write about it in-depth (for example, a news article discussing the charity's efforts).
- See our General notability guideline and Organizations notability guideline for more in-depth information. Rusty 🐈 03:22, 30 August 2024 (UTC)
Administrators' newsletter – September 2024
[edit]News and updates for administrators from the past month (August 2024).
- Following an RfC, there is a new criterion for speedy deletion: C4, which
applies to unused maintenance categories, such as empty dated maintenance categories for dates in the past
. - A request for comment is open to discuss whether Notability (species) should be adopted as a subject-specific notability guideline.
- Following a motion, remedies 5.1 and 5.2 of World War II and the history of Jews in Poland (the topic and interaction bans on My very best wishes, respectively) were repealed.
- Remedy 3C of the German war effort case ("Cinderella157 German history topic ban") was suspended for a period of six months.
- The arbitration case Historical Elections is currently open. Proposed decision is expected by 3 September 2024 for this case.
- Editors can now enter into good article review circles, an alternative for informal quid pro quo arrangements, to have a GAN reviewed in return for reviewing a different editor's nomination.
- A New Pages Patrol backlog drive is happening in September 2024 to reduce the number of unreviewed articles and redirects in the new pages feed. Currently, there is a backlog of over 13,900 articles and 26,200 redirects awaiting review. Sign up here to participate!

Weekly highlight
- Editors and volunteer developers interested in data visualisation can now test the new software for charts. Its early version is available on beta Commons and beta Wikipedia. This is an important milestone before making charts available on regular wikis. You can read more about this project update and help to test the charts.
Feature news
- Editors who use the Special:UnusedTemplates page can now filter out pages which are expected to be there permanently, such as sandboxes, test-cases, and templates that are always substituted. Editors can add the new magic word
__EXPECTUNUSEDTEMPLATE__
to a template page to hide it from the listing. Thanks to Sophivorus and DannyS712 for these improvements. [7] - Editors who use the New Topic tool on discussion pages, will now be reminded to add a section header, which should help reduce the quantity of newcomers who add sections without a header. You can read more about that, and 28 other community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week.
- Last week, some Toolforge tools had occasional connection problems. The cause is still being investigated, but the problems have been resolved for now. [8]
- Translation administrators at multilingual wikis, when editing multiple translation units, can now easily mark which changes require updates to the translation. This is possible with the new dropdown menu.
Project updates
- A new draft text of a policy discussing the use of Wikimedia's APIs has been published on Meta-Wiki. The draft text does not reflect a change in policy around the APIs; instead, it is an attempt to codify existing API rules. Comments, questions, and suggestions are welcome on the proposed update’s talk page until September 13 or until those discussions have concluded.

- @Drmies: Yesterday, after seeing this talk page, I stumbled upon the AN thread Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Archive238#Unblock_requests_being_handled_by_non-administrators. From my understanding of some of that thread's opinions, along with WP:NAC, non-administrators may close discussions, extending to unblock requests, where they are uninvolved, if they have the permissions to perform the action. No action was necessary since it was a decline, and wasn't even a real unblock request.
- However, if policy or general consensus differs from what I am saying, please let me know, preferably with a link to relevant thread(s) so I can learn from this experience. Thank you! Rusty 🐈 21:41, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
- Hmm interesting--but it seems to me you've turned around the idea that "[things] require that any sincere unblock request be reviewed by someone who has the technical ability to grant the request" (28bytes, correct me if I'm wrong)--you would need to technical ability to grant the request. That there is no technical ability necessary to deny the request does not mean that someone without that ability is free to deny it, no matter how crappy the request is, and how obvious that any one in their right mind would deny it. User:Bbb23, you have thoughts on this? It's the first time I ever heard of it. Drmies (talk) 22:05, 4 September 2024 (UTC)

part? That isn't the same thing as declining, but it's similar. - Also, the user who started the discussion stated that they had "seen an increasing number [of non-admins] handling [unblock requests]."
- I'd also like to add that I have no intention to continue handling unblock requests routinely: My work on-wiki mainly involves helping when I see something that might need my help. Rusty 🐈 22:15, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
- Oh, yeah, I suppose I see your point there. Thing is, we have gotten so careful with so many things (like, there's a hesitancy I sense in the way editors are handling drafts, rather than nominating or obliterating obvious crap and promotion) that I'm not sure it's obvious to everyone what "obvious abuse or vandalism" means anymore, esp. in an unblock request. I think what caught me off-guard is, well, first of all, I've never seen a non-admin handle one, and second, you declined it, rather than for instance just rolling it back. Does that make sense? Ha or you can just run for admin! Drmies (talk) 23:22, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
Hello Rusty, do you mind giving me any information for German Infoboxes, specifically for people. I am looking for a fit that would match George Finey. Thank you in advance. --Nojboj (talk) 22:22, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Nojboj: If you're looking for infoboxes on the German-language Wikipedia, I unfortunately am unable to help you. Each Wikipedia language edition is completely independent of each other, and thus one thing on one language edition may not be the same on another. Moreover, I don't speak German. However, the German Wikipedia may have a similar program to the mentor program on the English Wikipedia. You may find a better response there. Rusty 🐈 22:58, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for your help. I have another assistance you may be able to help me with. The Death Records of Nellie Phoebe Murray. I can't currently sign in to see those records. If you could assist me with her Death date, that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Rusty, and I'll look into German Wikipedia. Nojboj (talk) 23:19, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Nojboj: Once you have 500 edits and your account is 6 months old, you will be able to access Ancestry.com through a partnership with Wikipedia called The Wikipedia Library. Rusty 🐈 03:31, 5 September 2024 (UTC)

Feature news
- Starting this week, the standard syntax highlighter will receive new colors that make them compatible in dark mode. This is the first of many changes to come as part of a major upgrade to syntax highlighting. You can learn more about what's to come on the help page. [10][11]
- Editors of wikis using Wikidata will now be notified of only relevant Wikidata changes in their watchlist. This is because the Lua functions
entity:getSitelink()
andmw.wikibase.getSitelink(qid)
will have their logic unified for tracking different aspects of sitelinks to reduce junk notifications from inconsistent sitelinks tracking. [12]
Project updates
- Users of all Wikis will have access to Wikimedia sites as read-only for a few minutes on September 25, starting at 15:00 UTC. This is a planned datacenter switchover for maintenance purposes. More information will be published in Tech News and will also be posted on individual wikis in the coming weeks. [13]
- Contributors of 11 Wikipedias, including English will have a new
MOS
namespace added to their Wikipedias. This improvement ensures that links beginning withMOS:
(usually shortcuts to the Manual of Style) are not broken by Mooré Wikipedia (language codemos
). [14]
