How do I upload an image?

[edit]

Pictures under a license that allows reuse can be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. Once uploaded, they can be used here under the filename you chose when uploading.

[edit]

Hello. I saw a link where, first of all, The link did not exist in the source. When purged, the link stayed. When deleted via visual editor, it stayed after publishing. When null-edited, it stayed. When clearing my browser cookies, it stayed. What should I do? --The2gingerman (talk) 11:09, 27 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from 31nyou851r (08:46, 31 December 2024)

[edit]

Hello Rusty Cat (and Ixtal) - thank you for kindly mentoring me. I have wanted to serve as a Wikipedia editor for quite some time - tonight I've finally started the process. The proximal cause is that I want to undo an edit which I think violates BLP and NPOV policy. I've read these policies carefully, and I think I can do this properly - if there are pitfalls to this kind of thing that a beginner like me should avoid, though, please let me know. Thank you! I hope to become an increasingly active editor in the coming year. --31nyou851r (talk) 08:46, 31 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to the 2025 WikiCup!

[edit]

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2025 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor, we hope the WikiCup will give you a chance to improve your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page.

For the 2025 WikiCup, we've implemented several changes to the scoring system. The highest-ranking contestants will now receive tournament points at the end of each round, and final rankings are decided by the number of tournament points each contestant has. If you're busy and can't sign up in January, don't worry: Signups are now open throughout the year. To make things fairer for latecomers, the lowest-scoring contestants will no longer be eliminated at the end of each round.

The first round will end on 26 February. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email), Epicgenius (talk · contribs · email), Frostly (talk · contribs · email), Guerillero (talk · contribs · email) and Lee Vilenski (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Question from Carltonuba38 (12:37, 1 January 2025)

[edit]

Afternoon, I was wondering is it possible to get back my article page that was deleted/removed from Wikipedia? My name is Carlton Ubaezuonu and I’m a professional football player but I noticed my article with my history etc has been deleted? I’ve tried to contact who I believe may be responsible but I haven’t heard back. I’m not sure what steps to take? Thanks --Carltonuba38 (talk) 12:37, 1 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Carltonuba38: Well, looks like you made a request for undeletion which it was accepted and the article was restored into a "Draft" article. To get the article accepted you must make sure that you can get the article to meet our policies, most importantly the general notability guideline. Rusty 🐈 01:18, 2 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Freedomrings23 on User:Freedomrings23 (19:48, 6 January 2025)

[edit]

How do I make a page for my comedy career? --Freedomrings23 (talk) 19:48, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Freedomrings23: It seems that your page has been deleted under speedy deletion criterion U5: A non-contributor's misuse of Wikipedia as a web host. This doesn't mean you've done anything wrong, it's just that Wikipedia works differently from other websites.
Not anyone can just publish about themselves on Wikipedia – not only is doing so strongly discouraged, but there are strict inclusion criteria. In the words of the autobiography policy (linked above under the words "strongly discouraged"), [i]f your life and achievements are verifiable and genuinely notable, someone else will probably create an article about you sooner or later, but creating an article about yourself is strongly discouraged[...]
I'm sorry if you're trying to get yourself published or "make a page," as you put it, about yourself on Wikipedia, but this isn't the right place for you.

Request on 01:11:08, 7 January 2025 for assistance on AfC submission by MoonsLion

[edit]

What do you deem to be a reliable source? I would appreciate some help with this.

MoonsLion (talk) 01:11, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@MoonsLion: I provided a link to the policy in my decline message. In short, independence from the subject and significance of coverage of the subject were two main factors when I was looking at your sources. For example, the YouTube channel about is obviously not independent, and I didn't think the news sources were significant enough about the channel itself, but rather about MFI/the members who were arrested. I might be wrong about the news sources though, as I only did a quick skim. Rusty 🐈 01:46, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Rusty Cat I would love to know if you could give me a step by step explanation on how to edit in Wikipedia because I would love to help others with projects and don't want them to have the wrong information --MischiefMyster (talk) 20:23, 14 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@MischiefMyster: In my opinion, Wikipedia is not as simple as just a step-by-step guide, but I'd be more than happy to provide you with some information! Also, there's nothing wrong with making a mistake--Be bold!
Wikipedia is built on five pillars, which most of our policies are built around.
We have an introduction which you might want to check out. If you have a specific question, feel free to ask me; I tend to answer specific questions better than general ones like "how to edit Wikipedia."

You certainly don't write AI-generated slop as you did at User:Policydumby/sandbox, @Policydumby. Please don't do that again. Have a look at Wikipedia:Large language models as to why writing with an AI chatbot is a really bad idea on Wikipedia.

Question from PerpetualStudent2000 (20:00, 20 January 2025)

[edit]

Hey! I think a professor/author that I know really ought to have a wikipedia page but don't know how to gauge that officially. Could you help me? I'm talking about Marcelle Clements. Many other NYU professors/authors with less relevance have wikipedia pages so I don't see why not but I want to follow the rules. --PerpetualStudent2000 (talk) 20:00, 20 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@PerpetualStudent2000: Hello and welcome to Wikipedia! The criteria for determining whether a subject may have an article on Wikipedia (known as the notability guidelines) state that a topic "...is presumed to be suitable for a stand-alone article or list when it has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject." In other words, there have to be news sources that discuss the subject in-depth for it to merit a Wikipedia article. After a quick Google search for "Marcelle Clements," not much comes up. [edit]

What type of article can be adited and how --Mc snt tropez (talk) 10:31, 25 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Mc snt tropez: You seem to be confused; most articles can be edited unless they are "protected" for one reason or another (for example, to combat spam). Question from Gray Pxgh on Draft:Ryōmen Sukuna (Japanese Folklore) (21:42, 29 January 2025)

[edit]

Hello. I’m new to Wikipedia and I recently posted a page. When I try to edit the source code, Wikipedia won’t allow it. I am only allowed to edit the text. Is there a reason for this, and if so, is it linked to the page being newly published? Thanks --Gray Pxgh (talk) 21:42, 29 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Gray Pxgh: What you're describing sounds like the "Visual Editor". If you want to go back to source code editing, there is a pencil icon in the top right of the editor that allows you to change between editing modes. If you prefer to edit in source code mode, you may specify an editor preference in your preferences (top right, "profile" icon, preferences) ~ Rusty meow ~ 23:46, 29 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
