Route Description section on Wikipedia highway pages

Hi, you seem to be active on many Wikipedia highway sections, so I wanted to direct my general question to you. Does the Route Descriptions section on a highway page need citations? I saw your US Route 34 in Iowa page was named a GA, and in that article the Route Description section has sources. However, I have tangled with other editors who seem to disagree, but thankfully I am no longer involved in edit wars about them since I placed tags over the relevant sections. I just want to be able to reference someone with real experience in this area should any future issues arise. Some articles with these issues are: U.S. Route 209, Massachusetts Route 2, Interstate 88 (New York), U.S. Route 202 in New York, Massachusetts Route 9, U.S. Route 44 ( CT, RI, MA sections), Henry Hudson Parkway, Interstate 530, Taconic State Parkway, Interstate 89, New York State Route 34, Interstate 84 in New York (East of Hudson River section), Interstate 86 (Pennsylvania-New York), Interstate 684, and Wilbur Cross Parkway. (talk page stalker) I would say that a good highway article should have citations for the route description, and they're very easy. For mine, I cite the official state DOT map along with the Google Maps driving directions in satellite view. For some things, I've needed to add in other maps (railroad names, national forest boundaries). That will cover the basic content describing the route a highway takes. @IP Really any section of prose or figures (like junction lists, especially the mileposts) should be cited to a reliable source. What Imzadi1979 mentioned about citing Google Maps and a paper map is a current best practice for an RD.

Template:PRint (|exit & km notes)

Hi, Fredddie! I need your help again. The |espan= doesn't fit the exit list correctly, and I would like that in |km= and |km2= can be added letters to create footnotes between square brackets (like in CA-33 major intersections list). I solved the second problem by adding |km_ref=. It was easier than I thought but a small error still occurs when two different distances are placed in the same place (you can see that in PR-165 major intersections list). Yamil Rivera (talk) 15:41, 30 January 2020 (UTC)

I'm sorry. I didn't explain myself well. The problem with |espan= is that all the information in the other columns moves to the right, and |km_ref= always appears after the second distance used (|km2=), when there are times that it should appear in the first one (|km=). That's true. I feel bad for not explaining myself correctly from the beginning, but it was good in a way because I could solve some things on my own. Right now only the |km_ref= is pending. When I add two separate lengths with a line, the |km_ref= always appears after the second option, but I would like some parameter to be created so that the |km_ref= can also be positioned after the first length. Maybe |km2_ref=, |km_ref2= or something similar might work. You know more about this than me, and for that I feel grateful to you for all the help and teachings you've given me. A few minutes ago I tried to implement the km2_ref parameter in PRint, but it didn't work. Maybe what I'm asking for doesn't even exist in Jctint, but it would be very useful if it is added to all jurisdictions where it applies. The other thing that I'm currently trying to implement is the creation of PRintfiller. In Puerto Rico there're many intersections that place between two municipalities or localities, and that template can solve some repetitions in the information. I've currently modified the ONintfiller code to fit the needs of PR, but I don't know if what I've developed at the moment is fine to publish it. This is the first time I've heard of a need for a |km2_ref=. Do you have an example where using |km_ref= doesn't work the way you want it to work?

When there's a concurrency, normally the main road maintains its mileposts. The problem that I'm currently having with km_ref is that when two different km markers are placed in the same intersection, the reference always appears after the second length, although the note must be in the first length. PR-165 has concurrency with PR-2, so it's interrupted at its km 13.6, which corresponds to km 23.5 of PR-2, which is the dominant route. In that junction, everything is fine because the note is after km 23.5, but when we pass at the end of the concurrency, the note should appear after km 22.9 of PR-2, not after km 13.7 of PR-165 (California SR 33 shows perfectly what I want). Perhaps it isn't necessary to create a km2_ref, but there may be some way to place the reference where it is needed.

In relation to PRintfiller, you're right - I try to avoid that. In Puerto Rico it's common that a road is on the border between two different municipalities or localities, so PRintfiller could improve that detail in many of the cases, although I recognize that in others the Georgia SR 138 format would continue to exist, especially if in these two places separately there're no more intersections where the PRintfiller can be properly implemented.

Some errors with Template:Jctbridge

Hi Fredddie! I found that municipality and mspan parameters aren't working correctly for PR. When I write municipality=San Juan (for example), it appears in red font because instead of heading to San Juan, Puerto Rico, it redirects you to San Juan Municipality, Puerto Rico, and that page doesn't exist. Only the municipality_special parameter works in this case. Also, the mspan parameter doesn't fit the list, but lspan works perfectly. Here you can see what I'm saying. TC! I decided to take a different approach and I want to get PR using the Lua version of Jctint. Look at User:Fredddie/sandbox#PR_66 and you'll see where I'm at now. As far as |mspan= goes, we can't use it for municipalities. Mspan is reserved for lengths mspan and kmspan. As a compromise, you can use |munspan= for municipality spans. –Fredddie™ 02:34, 18 March 2020 (UTC)

I leave those to your discretion because you understand the situation better than I do: municipality1 + municipality2 = "municipality line" or "municipal line", and indep_city1 + indep_city2 = "city line", "municipality line" or "municipal line". I've seen a lot of errors in all the article lists after mspan was replaced by munspan, but I've no problem fixing it even though it takes me a long time to do it. I also noticed that km2_ref disappeared, which was very important in concurrency terminus. What I would like to know is if there's a span type parameter for ctdab so that it works the same as munspan and lspan in all barrios located in the same municipality. I think that's impossible because there're sometimes location1 and location2, but it would save a lot of time by not having to repeat ctdab so many times. Trouble replacing PNG road signs with SVG versions

Hello Fredddie! I was curious if I could ask for some of your assistance. I have requested SVG versions of road signs both here in section 104 and here, but when I and the creators of these files tried replacing the current PNG versions with the new SVG versions, we did not know how to. The filename specifications of these PNG images seem to be buried within templates. Given your experience with working with road sign files, perhaps you could help? Thank you! Hello again Fredddie! I apologize in advance if this is a bit disruptive, but I wanted to ask for your assistance again. I recently requested for the creation of a vector version of this road shield file. I noted that it was used in a lot of town and highway pages in Newfoundland under the "Highways" and "Junctions" section of their infoboxes. I have already changed the .png to .svg in a template for the respective file, but from what I can tell, these pages still use the PNG file. Would you be able to figure out the issue? Thanks! I saw you edited the infobox subtemplate Template:Infobox road/shield/CAN. One other place to check is the provincial road data module Module:Road data/strings/CAN/NL, which I've already edited. Each Canadian province and U.S. state has its own module and these control Template:Jct. Hi Fredddie, Thank you for fixing the K-145 article. Do you happen to know the year when the modern day us highway shield was first used in Kansas?, just so I know when to request one for an article. Also do you know if the Kansas Department of Transportation allows maps to be used from rural highway resolution documents or other publications of theirs? Sorry I was sleepy when I answered the last time. The 1971 MUTCD is the first one to show the current version of the U.S. Highway shield, but it wasn't in wide use until later in the decade. 1978 was the next MUTCD, so that's when I would start using the current shields. As far as maps from documents, I would err on the side of caution and not upload images to Commons. I know we have route maps from a Kansas state map in use, but I think those were kept on a copyright technicality. Template:Maplink with OSM

Hello, I`m editor and admin on Macedonian Wikipedia, and we have maplink option for OpenStreetMaps and they are allowed to be used on our wiki. Recently, we started writing articles about regional routes in Macedonia, and we want to be displayed on a map. They are already covered on OSM, but obviously something I`m not doing right. As I notice that you have previous history of roads/routes and using this template, I hope that you can help me, or at least point me someone who knows more. Update to Aomori Pref Route 120

I did that intentionally based on the image in the article and other signs that have been created. I also looked for some guidance on JPWP and the template they use seemed like the numbers weren't big enough. I certainly can resize the numbers, and I will, but I would like to get a measured drawing that's a little larger than this [1]. I've found the ones on JPWP are really inconsistent, I don't know what's going on under the hood to generate the signs over there but often times the numbers aren't even aligned well let alone sized correctly. Country parameter in Infobox Road template

@Fredddie:: With regard to the use of the country parameter in the Infobox Road template in the National Road article, I was going by the documentation for the template, which says, "These parameters are typically used only for numbered routes." I realize that "typically" is not "always", but there's nothing in the documentation that indicates any exceptions. In addition, the parameter doesn't seem to change the display of the infobox, and I don't see anything obvious in the template code for why it would be used for non-numbered roads. I respect your rate decision on K-196 and other that have been flagged for reassessment not being B-Class. Just wondering why its not a B-Class, because many of the Kansas Good Article class that were promoted 2014 and before seem like C-Class? Uintah Basin Rail

Fredddie, Wonder if I can beg/borrow you to teach an old dog a new trick. I'd like to create a map for the article Uinta Basin Rail. I'm completely new to GIS, but have wanted to learn for a long time. However, my scenario won't match the tutorial that is on WP:USRD. There are .kmz files (which I'm guessing/hoping is the same as kml) for the 3 currently active proposed routes for this rail line at http://uintabasinrailwayeis.com/ under "documents and links". I know for a fact they at one time had one up for the recently rejected "craig" alternative mentioned in the article (it was still active when I started working on the article. In fact, as is likely apparent from the article, for a while it was the preferred option, I had to revise the text once it was eliminated). So maybe by browsing a web archive service we might be able to find the .kmz file for that. I would like to do at least some of the work myself, to learn. Oh hi Dave! Are you thinking of making a static map or new dynamic map? If you're making a static map, your mapping software of choice should take KMZ. If you're going the dynamic map route, just open a KMZ in Google Earth and then you can manipulate it for formatting's sake and then save as a KML. If you put the three proposed routes into a folder, you can save the folder as a KML and then you only have one KML file to work with. KML Files Redux

Fredddie, so I'm back home and on my big computer. Still trying to get Uinta Basin Rail ready for GAC. Getting the Wikiminiatlas up and running was trivially easy. Thanks, your directions were easy to follow. Still harder is getting the map for the infobox to work. Apparently I have to convert the KML file to another format? The instructions on commons show how to create a .map file, but they do not show how to do this when one is starting with a KML. Have any ideas? FYI the KML file at Template:Attached KML/Uinta Basin Rail has the combined 3 active proposals, and the KML for the currently preferred proposal is at: Wikipedia:Map data/Wikipedia KML/Uinta Basin Rail (I know, I should have uploaded to commons. I'll delete once I get this thing working). When I preview Uinta Basin Rail with the infobox with this code added I just get a syntax error: {{maplink|frame=yes|plain=yes|frame-align=center|frame-width=290|frame-height=250|type=line|raw={{Wikipedia:Map data/Wikipedia KML/Uinta Basin Rail}}}}. Thank you so much for your help. The key to solving the problem was provided by User:Reedy who pointed me to a JSON syntax checker website at https://jsonlint.com/. He also futzed around with the file. There were lots of problems with that file, the biggest one is most likely during a search and replace to get the syntax to match a JSON that was known to be working, I likely contaminated some of the co-ordinates. P.S. My next step is to figure out how to isolate the co-ordinates of the 3 big tunnels to shade them differently. For now I may just do that manually in a bitmap an post as a separate image, given the article needs images anyways. Dave (talk) 18:38, 11 September 2020 (UTC)

The easiest way is to draw them in Google Earth then convert the kml to JSON. I would do a 10px line at 40% opacity. That's the same method I use for unbuilt road corridors. –Fredddie™ 18:50, 11 September 2020 (UTC)

D1 and D5 confusion + an A26 is needed

Dear Fredddie,

I know you said that it was hard to believe that they went from D1 to D5.

Note that these aren't really alphanumeric routes and that these are permanent detour routes. In fact they went from D5 first to D1.

Here's the reasons why there isn't a D2, 3 or 4.

D2: You can just use A40 instead, putting a D2 marker provides no additional benefit. D3: There's isn't a M3 motorway in NSW in the first place D4: You can just use A44 instead, putting a D4 marker provides no additional benefit.

This is if you were curious.

Also could you please make me a A26 marker.

South Carolina period shields

I saw that you used a 1971 variant on South Carolina Highway 28. I thought there were only three variants: the one from 1920 to 1947, the one from 1948-2006, and the current one (from 2007). It does support maps, and I did a JWB run to fix that. Infobox street, in my opinion, handles local roads better than Infobox road does. There is a massive backend to IBR for all of the highway systems of the world that Infobox street simply doesn't have. –Fredddie™ 03:04, 28 October 2020 (UTC)

Hello Yasercs89! For the northern/western and southern/eastern endpoints, I simply Googled them and put them in the appropriate parameter.

{{Jct}} and {{Routelist row}} are not set up for all Indian states and UTs at the moment, but I can work on that. Right now, the states that are set up use the full name of the state: Y Tamil Nadu, Y TN, N IND-TN

In order to use {{Routelist row}}, just copy this and fill in for each route:

Year in review

It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.
