ugly spacing errors?
[edit]On Stargate (device) you moved several images to being left-aligned with an edit summary detailing:
- rv: images are "left"'d so that the paragraphs dont get pushed down and cause ugly spacing errors (on +1024x768 monitors).
I don't understand. I've resized my browser to be 1024*768 exactly and viewed the previous version of the article (with all of the images right-aligned) and saw nothing that I would categorize as a "spacing error". Nor have I heard of anything like that happening to any other image-heavy, right-aligned article. Could you elabourate on the problem, as it sounds as though its possibly a user-specific error. — THOR | File:Lfucg-flag.gif 04:57, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

Image Tagging for Image:Iris_prop.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Iris_prop.jpg. The image has been identified as not specifying the source and creator of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. question about templates
[edit]hi, i'm just wondering how to make a movie templates like {Batmanmovies} or Harry Potter. i want to make clean articles for highlander movies and Highlander: The Series and i just wanna know how to make a template for that. thanks. ps: can i borrow some of your "nutshells" templates? they look really cool.HoneyBee 23:32, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
- Borrow? they're userboxes, I didn't make them, so go ahead borrow. Besides, all info is free and open on a wiki, so no need to ask. As for a highlander template, you'd have to tell me what you want in it before i can make it for you, or even tell you how to make it.-- Alfakim -- talk 14:10, 26 March 2006 (UTC)
- I want to make a separate sections for Highlander world: Highlander: The Series, movies, spinoff, anime, animated series, internet series, comics, novels, books, etc. Kinda like Batman world template which has Batman movies directed by Burton, directed by Schumacher, directed by Nolan, comics, animation, series, etc...that usually put at the bottom of the page. e.g BTAS. Can you help me? Thanks. HoneyBee 09:59, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
- Yes. but templates don't magically generate themselves if you just write "highlander" in them. you really must be specific about what you want. give me links, give me section titles. draw a picture if needs be. i'm not familiar with highlander. -- Alfakim -- talk 10:06, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

Image Tagging Image:Iris prop.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading Image:Iris prop.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media qualifies as fair use, consider reading fair use, and then use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
If you have uploaded other media, consider checking that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Image legality questions page. Thank you. Nv8200p talk 17:29, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

Can't get any Stargate FAs
[edit]Hi, I just nominated DNA Resequencer (Stargate) for FA status. It's a complete and utter disaster. People are making false staments/critisicm of the article. They are objecting without valid reasons. One guy even wanted to delete it. This is the thrid time I have nominated a gate article. All three are just as good as any FA but have all met overwhelming resistence (Resistance with no logic behind it). I have seen that you can't get any Stargate FAs either. What is the reason for this. Are people just biased agaisn't gate? Spoo passed. So did TARDIS. We have everything in Stargate (device) and DNA Resequencer that they do in those articles. Why won't any gate articles pass and how do you think we can get them to pass?
Also on another note. One user User:Mark 2000 is the one who wanted to delete stargate from wikipedia altoghther. He was stating that it was so insginifcant that every single gate page should be expoguged from WP. After offering him extrodirary evidence that it is notable and important, he still holds his stance. Every time i try to talk to him he blanks his own talk page. We need to watch out for him. Tobyk777 07:49, 12 April 2006 (UTC)
- Interessant. DNA resequencer was NEVER going to get FA because its just plain non-FA-notable. It's appeared in about 3-4 SG episodes out of 197 or something. Bad move to nominate it, i could have guessed the reaction from 20 paces. I think we should focus on Stargate (device). I know exactly why they dont like it. 1) we need to trim it down, a lot. much of the detail probably needs to be moved into seperate articles. 2) someone needs to read Stepping Through the Stargate and other publications that DO exist. And then reference them. 3) We need to reference interviews with Brad Wright and J Glassner, and other crew, preferably those from whilst they were setting up Season 1. see gateworld.net. 4) (2) and (3) plus other referencing will give us a nonfiction perspective. 5) (1)-(4) imply a complete rewrite because much of the tone of the article is wrong. -- Alfakim -- talk 13:23, 12 April 2006 (UTC)
- I agree that it's not as notable, but I disagree that I can't be a FA. In the past two days I have made Major upgrades to the article. I have more than 50 inline citations. I have sections on the making of, as well as real world, plausibility, as well as a section for smiliar concepts in other fictional works. I think that DNA Resequencer is better than Stargate device now. I strongly sugest you take a look at it and I would apreciate feedback. The one problem I keep having however, is that not all the refs show up at the bottom. I can't figure out why. If you could fix that somehow it would be great. Tobyk777 04:50, 13 April 2006 (UTC)
- The refs work fine for me, all 56. Let me know which ones arent showing. As for the article, as impressed as i am about the amount of work you've put in, it has a lot of problems. The main one is that it does, in actual fact, read like Original Research (see especially the "additional factors" section) and has rather a lot of spelling and grammar mistakes. There are a few Manual of Style errors (title capitalisation for instance), the LEAD section needs work, and a few other things. Unfortunately, i cant stress this enough: it simply isnt FA notable. the resequencer has only ever appeared in about 3 episodes, that just ISNT front page material. It's definitely a Good Article, but i'll be very surprised if it ever gets FA because those guys are strict, and this just isnt going to get past them with a whole other million articles that could pass.-- Alfakim -- talk 13:27, 13 April 2006 (UTC)
- I fixed the refs. There only are 56. I have corrected a few spelling errors, there are probably more. That can be fixed. You said that it's definately a good article. Right now it's a good article canidate. If you think it's denfinately a good article could you go add it? That would be good, (pardon the pun). You said that the additional factors section is Orgignal research. I reread it. It includes anaylsis, but I don't really see where the orginial research is. If you could point me to that, it would be good. It was my understanding that the topic didn't have anything to do with what can, or can't be a FA. I didn't think that that could be used agaisn't it. Tobyk777 20:05, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

Deletion of Kull Warrior and Ancient healing device from WP 1.0 list
[edit]Hi, I saw that after I formulated the WP 1.0 list, you deleted Kull Warrior and Ancient Healing device. Why? Do you not think they are important enough, or good enough to go in? Tobyk777 04:40, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
- Just not important enough. We don't want to give ourselves a fancruft image. WP:1.0 is trying to be as good as Encyclopedia Brittanica. Those two articles are just far too minor and unimportant - both in terms of reality AND stargate - to be in it, i think. I'm sceptical about DNA Resequencer as well, but its a v. good article. -- Alfakim -- talk 14:55, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
- I see your point. Ancient Healing device just ok, and only appears in 3 episodes. Kull warrior isn't a good article. But we should keep DNA Resequencer just because of how good it is. Tobyk777 18:18, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

License tagging for Image:Stargate greenscreen.jpg
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Stargate greenscreen.jpg. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:

- It also depends on cost of production. A show with a high cost of production will most likely require higher ratings to stay on the air (so they can charge more for commercials). Not to mention politics between the people who own the channels and the people who make the shows, and the companies who own those companies, changes in management, and all of those annoying things. (SciFi has previously cancelled a number of other shows, often very abruptly, including Farscape[2], which you might remember as it used to run alongside Stargate. Re-DNA Resequencer
[edit]I know that it is a minor article. But I thought that the whole point of 1.0 via wikiprojects was to identify quality articles, regardless of importance. Thats what I thought. If this is true I think it should be put back in. For now, it's ok if we leave it out. As for FAs; there is no rule governing the topic of FAs. If its notable enough to be in wikipedia, It's notable enough to be an FA. I still think it has a chance. Tobyk777 01:00, 11 May 2006 (UTC)

Wikiproject
[edit]Hi there. I edited the name of the Stargate Award. There is an informal set of rules about the naming of awards on the Awards pages. It has been generally agreed that only those awards that have gone through a vetting process can be listed on the wikiproject pages, and only those on the Barnstar Page can be called barnstars. Right now, the stargate award is listed as a PUA. If you want to upgrade it, I suggest you put the proposal on this page. --evrik 15:21, 23 May 2006 (UTC) Barnstars
Is the barnstar naming thing an absolute guideline? To be honest, unless it is I should quite like to change the Stargate award back to its old name. A significant amount have already been awarded the BARNstar, and it sounds silly just calling it a star. The logo is, like all awards, a variant on the barnstar. The award is evidently a barnstar dammit! Please reply on my talk page. -- Alfakim -- talk 23:15, 23 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit]Template Question
[edit]I've been working my up through the template master ranks with a question that, unfortunately, is much harder to answer than I thought. I want to add an image to my template based on the parameters given if and only if the image exists. I also want the image to be only 150px wide. I've run into two problems. Any assistance you can give would be greatly appreciated.
First, I cannot figure out how to check and see if an image exists and then, if it does not, show nothing. I can do it so the image link is always there and it shows something like "SCMap-doton-Charleston.PNG" if the image doesn't exist. But, I'd rather it either show the image or show nothing.
I also cannot add the "|150px" to the template. How do you add a |? I tried |, but that breaks the image link.
You appear to be as high as it gets on the template master's list. I really hope you can give some advice. --Kainaw (talk) 02:13, 27 May 2006 (UTC)
- I made a template:bar that just returns a |. Now, I can add | with {{bar}} easily. I'm still searching for a way to do "if image exists" though. --Kainaw (talk) 02:42, 27 May 2006 (UTC)
- Please put your {{bar}} template on templates for deletion - there is already a template specifically for this: {{!}}
- To check whether a page exists (e.g. image) and return different things if it does or doesn't, use {{Exists}} or if that doesn't work, have a look at {{tif}}. Tif only displays a template (given a parameter) if the template exists, and could quite easily be altered to do the same with an image.
- So do it something like this:
{{exist|Image:{{{1}}}|[[Image:{{{1}}}{{!}}150px]]|{{void}}}}
- -- Alfakim -- talk 15:46, 27 May 2006 (UTC)
- I have just discovered that a new ParserFunction has subsumed {{exists}}. So do it like this:
{{#ifexist:Image:{{{1}}}|[[Image:{{{1}}}{{!}}150px]]|}}
-- Alfakim -- talk 15:57, 27 May 2006 (UTC)
- I have just discovered that a new ParserFunction has subsumed {{exists}}. So do it like this:
- Thanks. I have it working now. It is a bit troublesome that MediaWiki doesn't come with hardly any of the # templates. So, I have to use the exists template still - but it works. --Kainaw (talk) 19:35, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
- Are you doing this on an external wiki? Wikipedia does have the # functions installed. I dont recommend {{Exists}} unless it's necessary. -- Alfakim -- talk 19:36, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
Timeline of Stargate
[edit]Hi, when I started, adding to/fixing the timeline, I saw that it said the ranges were millions to 8000 years ago, and 8000 years ago until 3000 years ago. It should be 10,000. They lost the war with the wraith and returned 10,000 years ago. The epiosde, "before I sleep makes sevral explict references to this. I changed it to 10,000, but you reverted my edits. Why? Tobyk777 17:23, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
- I said in the edit summary. You are right - it all happened 10,000 years ago. The current year is 2006. 2006 minus 10,000 is 8000 BCE. Common error. -- Alfakim -- talk 17:42, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
spelling
[edit]I admit it. I am a terrible speller. Most of the mistakes are not typos' they're just my teerible spelling. I constantly get graded down in school fro spelling. Sorry. Tobyk777 16:56, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
- No worries man. I think you just need to be a little more careful when you type, they're all errors like "hlelo" instead of "hello", stuff like that. Where do you go to school? -- Alfakim -- talk 18:51, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
Time.
[edit]Hello, Alfakim. I'm Daniel. Let's me ask you something because I'm just curious about using time in Wikipedia. But, some of them doesn't understand the way of using times when they send them message. Is time in wikipedia based on England? So, Please reply on my discussion's page. Can't think of a headline
[edit]Hi, I just saw that you were made an admin on savethegame.org. I don't really understand that site at all. Is it a whole wiki to save one article on wikipedia? If it only has 14 pages, why does it even need admins? Why have so many people gotten involved with this. Is there some significance which I don't see? I must be missing something here because this whole ordeal about the game isn't making any sense to me. Tobyk777 03:58, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
- LOOOOL. man that was funny. you are so right. I'm an admin there because before i was, the site was even worse. I pretty much made it everything it is - and hell, that isn't much. Yep, It's entirely dedicated to saving the one article, and now the article IS saved, it has no point. The stupid idiot who runs it hasnt been taking my advice about how to advance the site, so it's gone to nothing. Dumb. -- Alfakim -- talk 14:41, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
Thanks!
[edit]Thanks for the barnstar. It's nice to be appriciated. --Tango 15:27, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
Once again, can't think of a headline
[edit]Hi again. I browsed around on savethegame for a few mins just now. The whole think seems really stupid to me. I am laughing as I'm writing this. There are 3 users, all of which are admins. One, the creator of the wiki is the bearecrat. There are still only 14 pages, most of which are completely contentless. Since the article was saved from wikipedia, the sites goal is acomplished. The edit total for the entire wiki is less than 1000! I made comments on the main page talk, as well as a sugestion to the guy who runs it on this page: [3] I'm the IP both times. I just wanted to see if you agree with my comments. Tobyk777 08:39, 4 June 2006 (UTC) P.S. I just noticed that you are the only admin with a userpage. LOL. Tobyk777 08:41, 4 June 2006 (UTC)
- Of course i agree. The guy who runs that site is a total idiot. it could have been worthwhile but he's a total fool. really annoys me. ---i dont do anything btw, i just helped set it up.-- Alfakim -- talk 19:48, 4 June 2006 (UTC)
How did you get so good with the wiki software?
[edit]I have notcied that in sevral places you have stated that you are an expert with wiki software. You have made sevral sophistcaed templates, as well as run a very complex bot. I still don't know how to do ultra-complex editing, like portals and templates, or at least very well. I just was wondering how you got so good. Tobyk777 02:45, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
- Intuition really, just taught myself. Ultimately it's actually just very simple. I have some kind of background in programming languages but not much really, although that helped because all codes share similar things. but really, it was just by using it a lot. -- Alfakim -- talk 00:36, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
Ambiguous statement
[edit]The first thing I'd like to say is that you have created a really clever and useful bot, but I think it contains a slightly confusing statement. When you say "Please manually move the above banner to the top of the page" I believe you mean at the top of that talk page however, some people have moved the banner to the top of the article page (example [4]). If this isn't what you mean, I suggest changing the statement to something a little less ambiguous. Thank you Philip Stevens 07:03, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
- Sorry it's kind of too late to change the message. If anyone is silly enough to do that (i must admit, i didnt foresee it), then someone less silly can move it back. if this becomes a real problem i CAN go around and do a mass correction but it seems like a lot of work for only a few silly cases. -- Alfakim -- talk 00:31, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
Image Tagging Image:Replicarter1.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted.
|
Thanks for uploading Image:Replicarter1.jpg.
If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. cholmes75 (chit chat) 19:23, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Linkspam
[edit]Thanks for wanting to include a link to a website, but the problem with it is that it requires a third-party application to view the site properly. This can cause a problem with editors who use older browsers, as they may not be able to view the page. If you can find a link that doesn't require flash to view, then add it, but until then, please do not add the link to any more articles. Thanks. Naconkantari 01:28, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
- Apologies, didnt realise (i was adding it on request from the project). Would appreciate being unblocked on User:Albotim - i will of course not just start spamming link again! --Albotim 01:30, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
- I'm sorry, the entire thing was my idea. See Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Stargate#WP:RS_and_official_sites. Please don't blame Alfakim. Armedblowfish (talk|contribs) 04:04, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
The following was copied from Naconkantari's talk page Armedblowfish (talk|contribs) 10:24, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
Recently, you blocked Alfakim's bot, Albotim for linking to a Flash-requiring site from a number of Stargate episode articles. Alfakim did this as per my reccomendation, see Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Stargate#WP:RS_and_official_sites. While I understand that many users have trouble with Flash (myself included, on my primary computer), I felt it was necessary because the external links in said articles could be considered unreliable per WP:RS. (Most of the transcripts are from StargateWiki and fan sites, and GateWorld, while more reliable than the other sites, is still a fan site). While the MGM site (the one Alfakim was linking to) does require Flash (regrettably) it is the official Stargate site, and thus probably considered more reliable. When necessary for referencing, links which have gone dead (meaning no one can access them) can be kept (assuming no replacement link of equal caliber can be found) per WP:CITE, and I hope that this will be too. In any case, those of us who wish to avoid Flash sites can use the other external links (which are not being removed), even if they are considered less reliable. In any case, whether you agree with me or not, I request that you not blame Alfakim for this, but discuss this with / blame me instead. Armedblowfish (talk|contribs) 04:22, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
- After reviewing the external link guidelines closely, I found this entry: Sites that require external applications (such as Flash or Java) to view the relevant content unless (1) it is the official site of the subject of the article, (2) the article is about those media, or (3) the site is being cited as a reference.. You said that the link was to the official website, so I'm inclined to agree with you about the placement of the link. I'd also like to apologise if I have upset anyone over this, espically to Alfakim. I have self-reverted all the pages I removed the links from. Thanks Naconkantari 04:33, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
- Great, thank you. : ) I hope you don't mind if I copy this to Alfakim's talk page? Armedblowfish (talk|contribs) 10:24, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks for taking this up Armedblowfish it's really appreciated. I don't get it though... should I now continue to linkspam the official site? -- Alfakim -- talk 13:05, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
Fair use debate regarding television screencaps
[edit]Currently, there is a debate on Talk:List of Lost episodes regarding whether or not use of a 1/30th stillframe visual excerpt next to a list of audiovisual works (such as List of Lost episodes or List of Stargate episodes) is in accordance with WP:Fair use, and has even resulted in the protection of the page.
If you have any opinions regarding fair use on the List of Lost episodes page, please feel free to express them as I believe these two pages are sister projects.
