Tone markings

[edit]

Yeah, hmm, not really sure about these tone markings. Including them for the Maos, dynasties, Hubei for instance is extremely awkward. What in the world is the "Táng Dynasty" anyways?—the pinyin is Tángcháo, so no one would ever say "Táng Dynasty". Not a huge deal, but the whole thing seems uncalled for, would suggest normalizing throughout. Aza24 (talk) 05:14, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Cháo functions as the word dynasty; for example, Qing Dynasty is Qīng cháo, and the Yuan Dynasty is Yuán cháo. Saying Tángcháo Dynasty would be a tautology   User:Dunkleosteus77 |push to talk  00:09, 19 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
No I'm not suggesting you put "Tángcháo Dynasty". What I mean is, saying "Táng Dynasty" makes it look like you're trying to use the pinyin, but the pinyin is just "Tángcháo" so there's now just a weird hybrid of pinyin and normal Latin characters. I've never seen modern English literature that includes the tone markings on things like the Tang dynasty or Hubei; names and works might be a different story. The tones should not be used in this way, per MOS:CHINESE. I do not have the time to correct everything though. CentreLeftRight 08:44, 30 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
