Marking as a current event

[edit]

I think it's fair to say it qualifies as a current event, as the perpetrator has yet to be caught and this is linked to from the news section on the Main Page. I'm adding {{current}} to the page. Jrothwell (talk) 06:25, 5 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

"Spree"

[edit]

Is "spree" an appropriate title for this article? A simple "shooting" would suffice by itself. Alastairward (talk) 09:34, 5 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Homophobic violence

[edit]

I have removed the categorization of this crime as being part of homophobic violence. It seems whoever tagged it this way simply assumed this without checking the latest news. No perpetrator has been caught, no claim of responsibility has been issued and there is no evidence, that has been released to the media, that the crime was due to homophobia or that the assailant was anti-gay. With luck, in coming days, the nature of the heinous crime will come to light when the male, or female, murderer is caught. Until then very little is known. My reason for changing the category and type of crime is entirely based on the 'Haaretz' headline that declares "shooting may not have been hate crime"[1]. Haaretz is the newspaper of record in Israel and can be trusted to be on top of the latest information. Seth J. Frantzman (talk) 11:52, 5 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Haaretz is definitely not the newspaper of record in Israel, if only there was one. But, one on hand Haaretz a main outlet for liberal readersm but the tabloids will have the juicier details. You are right in neutralizing any finger pointing at this time. There is a gag order on any new information and speculation is just a waste of time at this point.--Shuki (talk) 20:33, 5 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
As of 2013 the category is in place, but new arrests suggest it was indeed not mainly Homophobic violence, so I am re-removing the category until proof it is relevent arises. DGtal (talk) 05:52, 7 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of homophobic violence tag is wrong. Emerging details point to a personel vendenta that was at its core rooted in anti-gay feelings. Others have pointed out that once the intended victim was not found at the site, the decision to shoot up the venue demonstrated animus towards the group and was homophobic. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.123.101.177 (talk) 03:02, 9 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. Edenc1Talk 14:44, 11 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
"the decision to shoot up the venue demonstrated animus towards the group and was homophobic" - while this is probably true, it is currently only speculation. In theory the shooter might have done the same if the vendeta was against a supermarket owner or a bank manager. Until we hear the shooters version in court or elsewere we can only guess his motives.
