Etlymology

[edit]

The article says this: "Stoke is a common place-name derived from Old English, typically meaning a secondary settlement or outlying farmstead." However, I see that Stoke Poges says this: "In the name Stoke Poges, stoke means "stockaded (place)" that is staked with more than just boundary-marking stakes." Are these both correct? Both claims are currently unsourced. I added the latter definition to North Stoke, Oxfordshire, but now I'm not too sure. Thanks. Martinevans123 (talk) 14:57, 4 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
