Does competition cease when you are young?

[edit]

Why don't any of the old professors compete publicly? I know that they do research, but still, there should be some way for people to be publicly impressed by how smart the professors of their institutions really are.

I reckon that there should be some kind of automatic competition that all research fellows are required to participate in, there probably is - but I'm not too sure about this. It would be interesting to find out about this anyhow - just to see which institutions really *do* have the best talent (sometimes looking at the last million research papers that someone has published isn't as revealing as seeing them solve a dazzling problem in a short time period.

P.S - Yes, I know that Viva's are stressful enough, but one has 3 years to complete a viva!

List of mathematics competitions by difficulty

[edit]

Where can I find the List of mathematics competitions by difficulty? 89.0.95.60 10:46, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Is there any math competition for graduate students?

[edit]

Is there any math competition for graduate students? And for PHD students? 89.0.43.3 08:33, 11 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes definitely. [1] —Preceding unsigned comment added by TUSHANT JHA (talkcontribs) 07:16, 6 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

But the IMC is for undergraduate students, not for graduate.

Vojtech Jarnik Competition (Category II) is open for graduate students. Internet Olympiad of Ariel University Center is open for graduate students and probably for PhD students. Dmitin (talk) 14:48, 29 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

IWYMIC has changed

[edit]

The IWYMIC has combined with the EMIC to become the IMC. Should the wikipage be updated to reflect that? Note: The link for the IWYMIC entry is broken.

Indiscriminate list

[edit]

This article has degenerated into an indiscriminate listing of competitions, most of them being either unsourced or sourced only via an in-article external link to the competition's web site. I propose drastically cutting this list, by removing all but those competitions that either have their own articles here or that are sourced to a third-party reference that discusses the competition in some depth. Are there any thoughts on this? NewYorkActuary (talk) 21:03, 14 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I came here from WP:MATH. Those seem like reasonable criteria to me. Sometimes in list articles I declare inclusion criteria in the lede, so that readers and editors are clear what is allowed. "This list includes competitions that are notable or have in-depth reliable sources." Something like that. Cleaning out this list is not a small job. --Mark viking (talk) 03:45, 7 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Agree with above concerns and fixed (with the new Visual Editor such editing is actually quite easy). Anyway, I have removed all self-sourced and unsourced entries, a lot of them added by self-promoting COI editors. Disclaimer: A few quasi-official events (for example from smaller or less-covered countries) might need to be re-added, but these should be added by uninvolved editors and accompanied by a credible source to verify their "official" national status. We don't have to exclude such noteworthy entries, but they need some kind of source. GermanJoe (talk) 05:10, 19 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I have added an editnotice reflecting the above-mentioned suggestions. Please ping me (or any template editor), if the edit-protected text needs tweaks or changes. GermanJoe (talk) 05:26, 19 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

So I agree but as a link that was indiscriminately removed, please list requirements before content destruction. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SIMIODE (talkcontribs) 18:15, 21 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Removal of unsuitable content is not "destruction" but part of the normal editing process to improve articles, especially when it's accompanied by an extensive policy-based rationale. Also, please see WP:COI for more information. Wikipedia is an encyclopedic project, not a platform for editors with a conflict of interest to announce or promote their activities. maths

[edit]

maths is very simple if you listen when you read.First try to understand the topic you are being tought. Then try to make your own questions to test yourself if you are understanding what you study Boity j (talk) 19:03, 18 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

What sort of competitions are accepted here?

[edit]

Willing to insert some Australian competitions here, just need to know what sort of competitions I can add in. A competition like the Australian Intermediate Mathematics Olympiad (necessary for IMO)[1] doesn't have it's own article but is a pretty big competition in Australia. Or how about somewhat smaller competitions such as the UNSW School Mathematics Competition which only operates in some of the states in Australia?[2]

Do competitions such as ICAS Maths (ICAS is split into separate subjects, not limited to mathematics) count, it's even done internationally in many countries.[3] Does a competition that allows students to take home the questions and study them at home such as the Mathematics Challenge For Young Australians count?[4]

There doesn't seem to be any guideline to what sort of competitions are allowed here, seems like the only ones inserted are ones which have their own article on Wikipedia, hence why I am hesitant about adding them in. However, if the general guideline is to only include competitions which have their own Wikipedia article, this seems to limit it to a very few amount of competitions and some very important ones are missing here!

Note: All competitions I have listed above give certificates to students for participation and gives special certificates to students who have achieved an excellent score, so I would consider them all to be pretty big competitions. I also have proper sources for each detailing information about the competition and how to enter. I don't see why they cannot be edited if there is sufficient information about them. If these are allowed, I'll add in competitions based off my knowledge of the Australian competitions, many of which I have competed in.

@The79:, you'll find a brief discussion about list inclusion in the thread "Indiscriminate list" above. Generally speaking, it does not matter how many certificates an organization offers or what it writes about itself. The most important question for Wikipedia's definition of "notability" is: have other independent sources noticed these events and decided to write about them (independent publications such as newspapers, journals and books for example)? Self-published or associated coverage is generally not considered sufficient (of course every single organization considers itself "significant" and "notable" in some way, but that's not an independent unbiased assessment). Similarly our own personal opinion or knowledge doesn't count without verifiable sources. The current consensus for this specific list does not necessarily require a full Wiki-article for inclusion, but atleast some independent coverage in a reliable source. GermanJoe (talk) 14:46, 3 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

So, if I can obtain a source that is not from the organization that hosts the competition, then it would count as valid for this article? What if the source does not write much about what the competition actually is, but focuses more on a student taking the competition such as this article for the Australian Mathematics Olympiad. I'm generally having trouble finding articles which fully discusses it as what the competition is, since the organization that hosts the competition is the one who generally goes into depth about what it is, not a newspaper article repeating the same information. The AMO is a pretty big competition, it's even mentioned on the International Mathematical Olympiad selection process article, yet I don't really have any articles explaining it besides AMT (the organization hosting it).

Does a school discussing the competition count? Not really sure what is considered valid. I would say it's valid, but I'll just double-check here.

Even the Australian Mathematics Competition doesn't have any sources on it's main article besides from AMT which hosts the competition, hence the primary sources template on the bottom of the article.... it's the only one listed under Australia (yes, I know, original research here, but AMC doesn't even lead to bigger competitions such as how the AIMO and AMO is required for IMO, yet it's listed as Australia's only mathematics competition). 2017 versions

[edit]

2017 versions are much more elaborate and show many more competitions than present versions. I think they're much better. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GS-216.1993 (talkcontribs) 21:08, 20 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Request to consider including Live Math Competitions and League , an international online mental math competition

Kindly find below the link to a video. Here a Pakistani based news channel has covered Mental Math Asia Cup from Live Math Competitions and league. The news clip speaks about our topper who is from Pakistan. Though the competition is organized by an Indian Company, this has already received international recognition

  • What I think should be changed: Request to include Live Math Competitions and League as a compettion
  • Why it should be changed: Live Math Competition and Leagues offers inclusive competitions rather than being an exclusive competition for a select few. The competition offers students from isolated places to showcase their talent on a world level and gain good exposure
  • References supporting the possible change (format using the "cite" button):

Not done Per the inclusion criteria spelled out on this page, in order to be included, the competition needs to have it's own Wikipedia article. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 13:39, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
