Date of Birth

[edit]

The article gives her birth year as 1950,but an article in the Observer says she is 60, which would make her birth year 1957 or 1958: http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2008/oct/26/1 . Does the author have a reliable source for her age? I am always inclined to suspect the earlier date is correct in situations like this. Melaena (talk) 01:50, 27 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think you meant 1947 or 1948(1948+60=2008). Unfortunately, basic math is all I'm good for here, so I couldn't tell you which year is correct. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.117.115.212 (talk) 19:20, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The following page has some biographical info on Kathy Reichs and gives her birth year as 1948: http://www.notablebiographies.com/newsmakers2/2007-Pu-Z/Reichs-Kathleen-J.html John richard leonard (talk) 15:22, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

BA and MA

[edit]

According to the article, Reichs received both her BA and MA degrees in the same year, from different schools. This doesn't seem possible. Can someone check this? Exploding Boy 04:42, 14 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed. She got her BA in 1971, not 1972, according to her CV. Mike Peel 17:10, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Odd factoid

[edit]

Why the sentence "She travels back and forth as required to the United States and Canada."?? I suggest deleting it or adding why this is significant/relevant. Samatva 03:55, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It said in the next few sentences that she works for both North Carolina and Quebec's governments thus making constant travel between the two places. This is very relevent to the books she writes as Tempe often works in both places in the same book. 13:35, 22 September 2006

Book Table

[edit]

I can't get the table of her novels to actually go in the novel section? Anyone know what's going wrong? Million_Moments 22:30, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed it, you didn't close the table off with a "|}" and i also moved it to be under the novels section. Peachey88 (Talk Page | Contribs) 09:38, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thankyou Million_Moments 12:07, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Novels

[edit]

I can't think of a smooth way to fix it but the repeition of how Kathy's real life job and a similar fictional job are...well, similar...it needs to be fixed. Similar things are similar, we don't need it thumped on our heads multiple times. Lots42 14:38, 19 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Novel Table Idea + I.S.B.N Question

[edit]

A. How about on the table we place a small thumbnail (Cover art) of the book next the title. eg:

  1. Thumbnail Pic#Title#Published#I.S.B.N.'s#Notes#

B. How do we decide what I.S.B.N. number goes on the table because different regions, cover types have different numbers, eg: the copy (paperback) i have now has 0434008214 which is different to the one in the table now. Peachey88 (Talk Page | Contribs) 10:04, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

We might just have to rule that the first edition US ISBN is used, as the books are normally released in the USA first. Million_Moments 12:06, 14 October 2007 (UTC) ETA: We'd also probably have to use US covers. Which is a shame, cause I think the UK ones are nicer (but then I'd be biased) Million_Moments 12:08, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Referencing and OR problems in this article

[edit]
Academic career

She has assisted Dr. Clyde Snow and the Foundation for Guatemalan Forensic Anthropology in an exhumation in the area of Lake Atitlan in the highlands of southwest Guatemala. She was a member of the Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team assigned to assist at the World Trade Center disaster.

= Unsourced.

Novels

Her first novel, Déjà Dead, won the 1997 Arthur Ellis Award for Best First Novel.

The fictional heroine in her novels, Temperance "Tempe" Brennan, is also a forensic anthropologist. Her lifestyle closely mimics that of her creator. A good portion of the novels is based on real life science. Most of the techniques used and technology mentioned are things that Kathy Reichs uses in her real life job. The blood spatter analysis used in Deadly Decisions, for instance, is directly from her job. In the novel Grave Secrets she uses her experience from her visit to Guatemala to enhance the story. Reichs has said herself that she didn't want her character to be perfect and chose to give Temperance some history.

= Unsourced.

Television

The series borrows the name of the books' heroine, Temperance "Bones" Brennan. As in the books, Temperance (Emily Deschanel) is a forensic anthropologist, however, very little else about the character is the same as in the books. She moonlights as an author, writing about a fictional forensic anthropologist named Kathy Reichs. The TV series does not tie in with the book series. It includes a cast of new characters and while the books are all set in either North Carolina or Montreal, the television series is based in Washington, D.C.

Thanks, I agree these are unsourced, I just think of original research as being something that can not be sourced and I am pretty sure sources can be found for all of these things. Million_Moments (talk) 16:07, 16 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Cirt: I appreciate your focus in Nov 2008 on the need for sources. However, there are now too many. They are very distracting in the Novels and Film section. Is it really necessary to cite sources for statements that represent common knowledge among people who are versed in a topic? That is, statements about which there is little disagreement. For instance, below, Dingo points out that Reichs includes afterwords to her novels; in other words, information in these afterwords is known by lots of people.

I would reserve source citations for statements that may be controversial or that suggest extreme POV by the editor. NinetyNineFennelSeeds (talk) 21:09, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Source Problems; Importance of KR novels

[edit]
  • Many so-called "unsourced" facts are from the afterwords of Mrs Reichs novels; AFAIK every novel has one where Mrs Reichs describes the scientific methods she used in her novel.
  • As a forensic anthropologist writing crime novels that were #1 bestsellers in Britain, I would class all of Mrs Reichs' novels "Mid importance". --Dingo (talk) 17:37, 19 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Reichs and the NC Medical Examiner's Office

[edit]

User Ocmejered, who currently works at the NC OCME, edited the article and stated that Reichs has not worked there during the last 6 years. A 2002 bookreporter.com article refers to her as a former forensic anthropologist for the NC OCME (http://www.bookreporter.com/authors/au-reichs-kathy.asp). The fictional character, Temperance Brennan, does work in the novels as a NC Medical examiner. Thus I think the article had been mixing up fact and fiction.

By the way, the kathyreichs.com website is under construction, so that can't be of help. NinetyNineFennelSeeds (talk) 02:34, 13 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Her website is currently up and running, including a biography. She doesn't claim to work there now and to my reading, doesn't claim to have actually worked there in the past. She says only that she consulted for them for several years. I've no reason to doubt Ocmejered's assertion, but neither does it seem reasonable to doubt what KR has claimed on her website biography. I don't think the two are necessarily mutually exclusive.82.15.50.0 (talk) 15:47, 19 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Kathy Reichs studied under Dr. Jane Buikstra, a physical anthropologist at Northwestern University, who was one of the first to work with police in identifying skeletal remains of crime victims in the early '70's. The socially reserved manner of Temperance Brennan may have been based on her. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.198.106.117 (talk) 03:25, 29 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mortal Remains paperback

[edit]

I have in my hands Mortal Remains paperback, Arrow books 2011. The listing makes it sound like this doesn't exist. I don't know exactly how that could be phrased better, so I've left it. 85.76.109.10 (talk) 12:30, 27 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Which country was the paperback issued in ? As you say, the article suggests the title Spider Bones was used for the paperback editions. I have a UK paperback edition issued by Arrow Books in 2011 titled Spider Bones. RGCorris (talk) 15:16, 27 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

"Personal life" section

[edit]

Just out of curiosity, how come there's no "Personal life" section?

I'm sure she has one. 2600:8800:784:8F00:C23F:D5FF:FEC4:D51D (talk) 16:31, 9 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
