2023-04-05 cleanup

[edit]

Notes on some edits I just did:

  • grammar and sentence structure cleanup
  • rearranged the order of some sentences to make the narrative more chronologically coherent
  • clarification in the lede about different states and axis occupation
  • bastille day celebrations were initially to commemorate ww1 french losses not ww2, which hadn't happened yet
  • the article as it stood had a quote from the league of nations that seemed to insinuate hungary was responsible for the assassination of king alexander I. checking the section about the assassination in the main article about that king, the event seems to be confusing mess typical of the balkans: a bulgarian assassin working for macedonian separatists, enabled by croatian ustase and italian intrigues. now, maybe the hungarians were involved in this clusterfuck too, but to me it doesn't seem appropriate to mention *only* hungary, especially on a page that isn't about that topic in the first place. it has little to do with france-yugoslav relations as such, other than the fact that it happened to take place in marseilles, and a french minister also got killed in the crossfire. to me, the inclusion of this quote reeks of some drive-by editor with a nationalistic axe to grind against hungary. I've deleted the league of nations quote and just put a link to the section about the asssassination, so people can read about the whole affair in detail if they want to.
  • the part about a NDH consulate in vichy france was taken from the NDH's "foreign relations" section along with the citation; I haven't read the citation.
  • added some perfunctory paragraphs about the 90s yugoslav wars. it seemed strange to omit france's involvement in this entire episode, but on the other hand I didn't want get into too much detail because it's hard to tell where "yugoslavia" ends and the successor factions begin (e.g. republika srpska). so I erred on the side of less detail.

apologies if my reworking of sentences substantially changed the meaning, was not my intention if so
