A fact from Brenda Banks (animator) appeared on Wikipedia's Main Page in the Did you know column on 31 March 2021 (check views). The text of the entry was as follows:
Did you know... that Brenda Banks was one of the first African-American women to work as a professional animator?
The following is an archived discussion of the DYK nomination of the article below. Please do not modify this page. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page (such as this nomination's talk page, the article's talk page or Wikipedia talk:Did you know), unless there is consensus to re-open the discussion at this page. No further edits should be made to this page.
Hook is within DYK limits and is interesting. Article is long enough and new enough. I'm not sure the photo in the article is properly labeled as public domain; it should be verified or removed. If it is correctly marked as PD, perhaps consider including it in this nomination. Addressing the unsourced filmography (suggest trimming) should fix a potential copyvio with WP:IMDB. Otherwise, the article seems well sourced. QPQ is done. TJMSmith (talk) 13:48, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Thriley, Silver seren, and TJMSmith: I'm reopening this after running checks on it, because I have a couple of concerns: (1) the hook and article don't seem to quite check out in the source - we're saying the incident with Bakshi happened in 1973, yet I can't see any reference to a year in the source; the earliest that it says she worked for him is "Bakshi hired Banks for his 1974 film Coonskin". (2) the article says "with no background in animation", and although that's attributed to Bakshi we should probably make clear that the source says it is not true - she had worked on other animation projects before she worked for him; (3) I also can't see the remainder of that sentence, "no further knowledge offered on her background other than her US state of origin where she had come by train" in the source. Is it there? Cheers — Amakuru (talk) 11:35, 16 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps we should create a new hook? The facts about her early career seem a bit hazy. I was hoping for more news stories about her that would flesh out the details more. Thriley (talk) 17:36, 16 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Yes that sounds good to me, thanks guys. If someone puts an approval tick for that then I can promote it back into a queue tomorrow morning. (Oh and if the stuff about her arriving by train isn't cited, then let's remove it from the article for now... where did that even come from?) Cheers — Amakuru (talk) 00:15, 17 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've re-added this nomination to the main DYK template awaiting approval page so that we can get a new reviewer for the Alt hook. SilverserenC01:11, 18 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
