I want to add these catergories but cannot. Can someone help?

You need to use a pair of square brackets ("[" and "]") on each side of the category. So, you'd have "[[Category:Example category]]." So, you were most of the way there: you opened the links correctly — and furthermore, piped them correctly — you just left off the last "]". The only other thing to keep in mind is that these categories should go on the page for the article itself, not here on the talk page.
