Peter Erich Voss (born 1954) is a German-born entrepreneur, engineer, and cognitive scientist known for his contributions to software systems design and Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Over his career spanning several decades, Voss launched several companies and has been a pioneering figure in the field of Artificial General Intelligence.[1]
Early life and education
[edit]Peter Erich Voss was born in Germany and moved to South Africa at the age of 12, where he attended the German School, Johannesburg. In 1971, he joined a standby power company where he learned electrical and electronics engineering, laying the foundation for his future endeavors. In 1975, Voss started a nine-month journey from South Africa to Kenya and India overland to England. [1]
Career
[edit]Entrepreneurship and Business Success (1979 - 1992):
[edit]In 1979, Voss founded his first company, Electronic Designs which focused on custom-building microprocessor-controlled systems for industrial applications. Recognizing the growing importance of computer technology in business, Voss established a computer systems company a year later. This venture provided ready-made solutions for medium-sized businesses, specializing in real-time order processing, inventory control, and accounting software tailored for early PC networks. [1]
As CEO and Chief Scientist, Voss led the development of several generations of a comprehensive integrated software package. The company delivered numerous customized systems, implemented local and wide-area networks (LANs and WANs), and even created its own full-featured language with a compiler, database system (DBMS), and 4GL tools. By 1987, the company had grown to 400 people and was listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.[1]
Transition to AGI (1992 - Present):
[edit]In 1992, Voss sold his highly successful company and began to pursue his passion for studying intelligence. This intellectual exploration encompassed philosophy, epistemology, psychology, cognitive and computer science, with a particular focus on understanding the human mind. Voss moved to the United States in 1995 as he continued his research into intelligence. [1]
