Manu Bheel (Urdu : منو بھیل ) is one of several bonded farm laborers freed in 1996 from the private jail of his landlord in Sanghar district of Pakistan’s Sindh province.[1]
About Manu Bheel
[edit]Manu Bheel, a poor peasant belonging to the scheduled caste, whose 9 family members have been missing for the past 25 years, He was born in Sanghar, Sindh, Pakistan, into a Sindhi Hindu family.[2]
Kidnapping incident
[edit]Just two years after his release a private jail, 9 of his family members were abducted in broad daylight from a farm in Jhuddo taluka in Mirpurkhas district in 1998, allegedly by his old landlord Abdul Rahman Mari. He have gone to police, to elders in his area and he have been knocking on the doors of the law but his parents, his wife and his children are nowhere to be found. He have also gone on extended hunger strikes but to no avail.[1]
Bheel said "If a well-to-do person goes missing from your big city, people will move heaven and earth for his or her recovery, but here my entire family have vanished from Mirpurkhas and no one cares. With no family, I have no home ... I have no life,”[2]
Manu Said “They were kidnapped. I know because there have also been confessions from a couple of men, there have been arrests, too, but despite all this, there has been no progress in locating my family members. My parents were old. They may not even be alive today, but what about my children, my wife?” he asked. “Meanwhile, instead of helping me, there have been false cases lodged against me to create hurdles in my way. I am a very poor man. I don’t mean anyone harm. All I want is my family back,”[2]
Supreme Court Suo Motu
[edit]After an 8-year-long struggle, Pakistan’s Supreme Court took suo motu notice of the case and ordered the police to recover Manu Bheel’s family, but they were unable to do so. This prompted the Chief Justice of Pakistan to ask the Inspector General of Sindh Province to intervene. Still, nothing happened. The case was stalled due to a legal emergency in 2007, leaving the poor Hindu laborer’s relatives still ‘missing’. On 15 December 2021, On the application of Advocate Sarwan Bheel a Hindu Social Activist, One Man Commission, a Commission for minorities rights established by the Supreme Court sent a letter to the Sindh Inspector General of Police reminding them about the case and demanding a detailed report within 15 days.[3][4]
