Welcome to the Birthday Committee

Welcome, WheresTristan, to the Wikipedia Birthday Committee! You have met all of the membership requirements. Any concerns should be directed to Steveo2. See the Birthday Committee Project Page to see our userbox and the Birthday Message Templates. Go to the bulletin board to see any new announcements concerning the committee. Remember, Be Bold!. Armbrust, B.Ed. Let's talkabout my edits? 23:53, 1 March 2012 (UTC) [reply]
Great! I am glad to be a part of the community. I've already wished some people birthdays! WheresTristan (talk) 00:10, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Just three notes. First, there is a custom to not congratulate to users who are inactive over long time, preferably one year. Second, if you congratulate a user for adminship/bureaucratship anniversary, than you should check if the user is still an admin/bureaucrat before awarding. And third, new sections at talk pages go to the bottom, not to the top. Regards, Armbrust, B.Ed. Let's talkabout my edits? 12:12, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, sorry about that. Guess you learn something new every day. Thanks for notifying me of that. Also, how did you get that message page? The one with the Whisperback info.  :)
WheresTristan (talk) 19:51, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If you mean User talk:Armbrust/Editnotice, than you can also create one at User talk:WheresTristan/Editnotice, with the use of {{Editnotice}}. The documentation can be found there: {{Editnotice/doc}}. Armbrust, B.Ed. Let's talkabout my edits? 20:27, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm... I think I may have set it up wrong. Whenever I click to make a "New Section" on my Talk page, it shows the correct message(s) but everything seems offset-ted. Could you please help me with what is going wrong? :) WheresTristan (talk) 20:27, 3 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Corrected. Armbrust, B.Ed. Let's talkabout my edits? 20:44, 3 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it! WheresTristan (talk) 20:47, 3 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I also see, that you're a member of the Welcoming Committee. Please note, that vandals and users without edits shouldn't be welcomed. Armbrust, B.Ed. Let's talkabout my edits? 20:48, 3 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the info :). I do not "welcome" vandals, there is a message in Twinkle specifically for potential problem users. Oh, I did not know not to welcome people without edits, thank you for actually helping me. You have improved me a lot on Wikipedia as a matter of fact! :D WheresTristan (talk) 20:51, 3 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As far I know the reason behind no welcoming users without edits is, that most of the welcome templates begin with (or at least contain) "Thank you for your contributions". But without edits there are no contributions. Armbrust, B.Ed. Let's talkabout my edits? 20:56, 3 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. I am currently reading more up on the rollback feature to make sure I do not make a dumb mistake. WheresTristan (talk) 20:58, 3 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Teahouse Invite

Hello! WheresTristan, you are invited to join other new editors and friendly hosts in the Teahouse. An awesome place to meet people, ask questions and learn more about Wikipedia. Please join us! Rosalina2427 (talk) 21:17, 3 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Glad to see you stop by the Teahouse and make a profile! :) Vandalism stinks, I agree. Feel free to drop by and ask a question, like the one below, anytime! SarahStierch (talk) 23:43, 3 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I will surely! The Teahouse page looks so professional. :) WheresTristan (talk) 00:06, 4 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Rollback Testing

Can someone please help me learn how to use my Rollback feature correctly inside my Sandbox? I am currently using Twinkle as well. WheresTristan (talk) 22:09, 3 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Messages here, but I'll ask here too. Are you asking another editor to make edits in you sandbox so you can revert them? I'll be happy to help you if that's what you're trying to do. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 00:17, 4 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that is exactly what I would like. Thanks! :) WheresTristan (talk) 00:24, 4 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm...looks like someone has been messing with your sandbox... Nolelover Talk·Contribs 00:29, 4 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ha, gotcha! Except... there are three rollback choices that I can choose from. [rollback (AGF)] [rollback] and [rollback (VANDAL)]. I clicked the last one, what are the differences? WheresTristan (talk) 00:32, 4 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Rollback (vandal) is an immediate rollback that gives an automatic edit summary (Reverted # edits by VANDAL (talk) identified as vandalism to last revision by EDITOR). The edit summary will always follow that style, so don't use this button unless it is actually vandalism. I'm not quite sure what the edit summary for AGF is, but the gist of it is that you can use that button when, say, a newer editor makes a bad edit that isn't vandalism. They are still good-faith editors, but the edit itself is clearly bad (maybe they added a header to the lead section, or something like that). The middle button is just when you need to rollback a series of edits. Remember that you almost always need to use an edit summary for AGF and normal rollback. I think when you click one of those two a dialogue box will pop up asking you for an additional edit summary, so you should always fill that in. In fact, are you up for one more test? I'll make two edits to your sandbox - this time revert with the AGF button. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 00:40, 4 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ahh, nevermind, I see you got it. Anything else I can help with while I'm here? Nolelover Talk·Contribs 00:42, 4 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Please not that the rollback feature of Twinkle isn't the same as the userright Rollback, and thus you shouldn't use {{User wikipedia/rollback}}. If you demonstrated, that you can distinguish what is and what isn't vandalism, than you can request it at WP:PERM/R. Regards, Armbrust, B.Ed. Let's talkabout my edits? 00:53, 4 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ah... I see, I am going to put in a request. WheresTristan (talk) 01:01, 4 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I hope you don't mind, but I must say that you probably won't get the rollback tool if you ask right now. I would suggest that you revert about 50-100 instances of vandalism over a few days just to show that you know what vandalism is and isn't. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 01:12, 4 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I will definitely take your advice. :) WheresTristan (talk) 01:15, 4 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
sorry about delay in answering. my advice is as above. Good luck. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 04:14, 7 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks, I have been working hard to fight vandalism. WheresTristan (talk) 01:27, 8 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Help Me!

Can someone please help me set up an archiving system for my talk page?

Hello. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You could also click on the signature button or located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when they said it. Thank you.
I set up ClueBot for 90 days. A full explanation is at User:ClueBot III and a general "FAQ" is at Help:Archiving a talk page. Regards, mabdul 12:43, 22 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much! I read the documentation but I have a question, when will it start archiving stuff? WheresTristan (talk) 18:54, 22 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
At the moment the archivebot is configurated so that it archives after 90 days and leaving a minimum of 2 threads here

|minkeepthreads=2 |age=2160

That are the corresponding "code fragments" at the top of this page. Feel free to change it as you want. As I already said at User:ClueBot III is (if you scroll down a bit) a complete explanation which parameters cvan be manipulated and what they mean! mabdul 19:50, 22 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
90 days seems good to me, I really appreciate it! WheresTristan (talk) 19:55, 22 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oh I forgot: 90 days * 24 hours = 2160 hours ;) (Just if you wonder why 90 days and the 2160 fit together) mabdul 20:02, 22 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Haha, it's all good, I kinda figured it out. :) 71.63.67.167 (talk) 20:48, 22 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Help Me!

Could you please be specific as to your problem? What exactly is it that you want? (Please notify me with a talkback or whisperback when you reply)  Hazard-SJ  ㋡  02:08, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, thanks for responding so quickly! My archive box is stretched out extremely long with random articles of Wikipedia, it does not make any sense. I would just like my archiving system to work, fine. Do you understand now? Thanks a lot! WheresTristan (talk) 12:58, 25 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
What's going crazy? I mean here are simply no threads at the moment which the bot can archive, because all threads are newer than the configured 90 days (as mentioned above). mabdul 03:23, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I somewhat fixed it, before you came, it was ridiculous. I made those changes myself. I think it should be good now :) WheresTristan (talk) 03:27, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
WheresTristan, your "fix" actually removed the entire auto-archiving process. This page won't be auto-archives as a result. I could set up the archiving for you, but I'd need to know two things first:
  1. How long should the thread be inactive before being archived?
  2. What format do you want for the page archives? (What do you want the archive page to be called?)
Hope to hear from you soon.  Hazard-SJ  ㋡  05:23, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I would really appreciate it if you set it up for me! As for the questions,
  1. Is there like a "default" that a majority of people use? I wouldn't want the number to be too low because then I would have way to many archives. But I would also would not the number to be too big, my talk page would get extremely large. Any suggestions?
  2. I think it could have a pattern of, Archive 1, Archive 2, ...
See ya soon WheresTristan (talk) 14:08, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

People usually set the length of inactivity based on how active they are and how often they get new posts on their user talk page. Also, some additional settings include the minimum number of threads to archive and the minimum number of threads to leave unarchived, though they are less important.  Hazard-SJ  ㋡  17:32, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Would you be able to set it at once a month? Also what is the point of archiving? Is it against the rules to delete contents of your own talk page? WheresTristan (talk) 18:31, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it can be set at once per month. Also, archiving is so you don't have an excessively long user talk page, and you can still access all the threads easily. You can delete comments, generally, but it would be hard to find something you might be looking for. It is common practise to archive.  Hazard-SJ  ㋡  19:03, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That would be great! WheresTristan (talk) 20:42, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Fire Fighters Charity

Hello Tristan,

I amended the page for our Charity as it was out-of-date and factually incorrect, but unfortunately the amendments have been deleted. Please can you let me know how to correct the page without it being undone.

Thanks ever so much, Loretta — Preceding unsigned comment added by Spridgeon1 (talkcontribs) 08:51, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I undid the deletion. I do recommend that you add internal links to the articles as well as references. In any case that you would like to undo an edit, click "View History" in the top right, this will show all edits that have been made on that article. You can then look through them and undo the one that you like. If you have any more questions, feel free to let me know! Also remember to sign your posts by adding ~~~~ to the end of your posts.
