Freotopia content donation

[edit]

Garry Gillard, a Fremantle resident, has built a large website at https://freotopia.org all about Fremantle. It's scope is rather larger than Freopedia, as it includes any and all information about Fremantle. He no longer is going to maintain the site, and has given its contents (but not the name Freotopia) to Wikimedia (see the about page for his statement to this effect).

The question now is how to handle this data. My plan is to get it all loaded into a MediaWiki install, because Garry wants it to continue to be updated if people want (and I'm keen to do so) and a wiki seems the easiest way. There's not much in it that can go directly to Commons or Wikipedia (there is some that can go to Wikidata, and there are lots of public domain photos but those are generally from other collections). Garry has suggested that the new wiki be called Freopedia, and that's possible as Wikimedia Australia now has the domain freopedia.org (which currently redirects to this project page here). At a WikiClubWest meetup today we talked about it a bit, and the general feeling was that it the scope of Freopedia shouldn't be increased to include a separate off-Wikimedia wiki. What do people here think?

WMAU doesn't host any content, although it does currently have a wiki being set up for STARDIT (so Freopedia mightn't be the first thing it hosts). I've asked the WMAU Board what they think is the best way forward (will hear back in the coming weeks sometime I think).

Anyway, happy to hear any ideas! If nothing else happens, I'll probably host it myself. —Sam Wilson 11:20, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
