uBLP barnstar request
Hi, at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Unreferenced_Biographies_of_Living_Persons#Done_and_to_do we have a request for a barnstar we can give out to projects and individuals who have helped reference our backlog of unreferenced BLPs. It would also be useful to have some sort of campaign medal for people who have referenced more than a certain number of unreferenced BLPs. Any one feeling creative out there? ϢereSpielChequers 14:16, 18 July 2010 (UTC)
- Retouched from citation and BLP barmstars. Would have thought it was unnecessary but since it came out of the BLP RfC 3 I'm making one. Kayau Voting IS evil 05:01, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks Kayau, much appreciated. ϢereSpielChequers 05:31, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
Barnstars 2.0
Greetings colleagues! I'm running a project to remaster all major barnstars in Wikipedia. Some samples:

What is your opinion on this idea?
P.S. If you want me to remaster your barnstar, you can submit a request on my talk page. Antonu (talk) 09:47, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
- Ooooooh, shiny! One thing - the correct admin barnstar is this. ~NerdyScienceDude (✉ • ✐ • ✍) 12:59, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
- Personally, I prefer the old rugged look of the barnstars. I believe their charm lies in their realistic, worn look. Despite all the effort you have spent on these, I don't think this is the right direction. I have no opposition for these being voluntary .svg alternatives though. — HELLKNOWZ ▎TALK 13:11, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
- P.S. about the admin barnstar: you'r right! The point is that Admin Barnstar is the remastering of russian version of the that brnstar. But I'm planning to remaster english version too ;) Antonu (talk) 13:47, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
- Well, Wikipedia is not a vote, you can hold a straw poll if you wish. Note that you have resized the originals from their intended sizes and thus blurred many of them them, so it is non-objective to compare them side by side at 120px. You need to show the originals at the sizes they appear in the barnstar templates. — HELLKNOWZ ▎TALK 14:14, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
- Do also note that at least 1 image is incorrectly licensed, for example, File:Premium Reviewer Barnstar Hires.png, which you release in public domain although it is composite from File:Nuvola apps kpdf.png, which is under GNU. Also, any particular reason you did not upload to Commons? — HELLKNOWZ ▎TALK 14:33, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, you should use the CommonSense tool to make sure you aren't making mistakes, Antonu. Kayau Voting IS evil 14:37, 29 June 2010 (UTC)

A lot of the barnstars look completely different from the originals, such as the thinking guy, the rosetta stone and the atom. Can they be made closer? Also I think a lot of users prefer the old versions, especially since it's a PD star from meatball IIRC. We should do a village pump proposal for this IMHO. Maybe even a meta proposal since barnstars are used in many wmf projects. Kayau Voting IS evil 14:36, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
- With Restraint. Remastering some of the Barnstars seems like a good idea, but some of them need to stay how they are, such as the Original Barnstar. Mainly, I think only the ones that look bad currently (such as the old Atom barnstar and invisible barnstar) should be changed. I like the rugged look. Let's keep these SVG versions though, maybe make an alternate template syntax for these barnstars that will change the image to these versions, and list both images on WP:BARN. Quinxorin (talk) 01:25, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
- Upgrade most- some of your edits are significant improvements; however, the original barnstar being the original barnstar, should stay the way it is. Also, I quite liked the old emoticons for the good humour barnstar and the other one with the smiley face. And the old rosetta stone one was good as well. And also- the AfC one has been designed specifically for the project based on things the project uses, so that one probably should not be changed. But most of the others, I will support. {{Sonia|ping|enlist}} 07:02, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
- Upgrade, but shouldn't the new Wikipedia logo be used in these? --Yair rand (talk) 09:26, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
- Keep old versions If these really were SVG versions I would say to offer either alternative, but they're not: they're just very large PNGs. And if we're going to keep PNGs, I prefer the "rugged" look of the current images. Anomie⚔ 11:07, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
- Are you sure? I think they are the kind of pngs that can be scaled, though I know very little about this stuff. Kayau Voting IS evil 12:17, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
- PNG is a raster format, while SVG is a vector format.
--Gyrobo (talk) 13:14, 30 June 2010 (UTC)- To clarify for Kayau: A vector format image is specified in terms of "draw this shape here, draw that shape there, etc". A raster format image is specified in terms of "the first pixel is this color, the second pixel is this color, the third pixel is this color, etc". To scale a raster image, you have to guess what each pixel in the scaled image should be based on the pixels near the corresponding location in the original. Depending on the relative sizes and the quality of your guesser, that can give good results or can be blurry or jagged. To scale a vector image, you just draw the various shapes bigger or smaller, no guessing required so everything remains sharp and straight. Anomie⚔ 14:53, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks. Though I still haven't decided whether we should change... Kayau Voting IS evil 14:56, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

- Keep old versions per Anomie. Of course the new ones like nice and smooth - they're 40x the size (KB-wise) of the old ones, and H3llkn0wz is right too - it's a faulty comparison to render them all at 120px when the old versions aren't made that big to begin with, since they're intended to render at 100px. VernoWhitney (talk) 12:31, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
- Keep old versions. I'm voting this way only because I believe that each one of the new barnstars should be discussed separately, instead of being either approved/rejected in bulk. I also have a few comments:
- If a new barnstar design receives consensus, that image should be uploaded as a new version of the image already in the barnstar; the template(s) should not be changed.
- The images being compared are the wrong sizes, as others have mentioned, most of the barnstars should be at 100px.
- If the replacement images are still raster PNGs, there's no real benefit to replacing the old barnstar image. In fact, the new images may be worse, because they must be scaled down and that introduces the possibility of compression artefacts.
- Some of these barnstars are for Wikiprojects and any discussion about replacement should involve that project.
--Gyrobo (talk) 13:14, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
- I made 110px size. Its actual minimum of the old barnstars versions. Actually its even 111px. Antonu (talk) 15:13, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

- Some of these are clear improvements; but I find the rosetta barnstar and the gold barnstar in particular to be worse in the new versions, before even considering the sentimental value of the old "rugged" look. HereToHelp (talk to me) 15:40, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
- (ec HereToHelp) Upgrade, but keep the old ones as an option. I like the shiny looks of the remastered ones, but they should be optional. I would like the ability to use the old ones, even if these get implemented. ~NerdyScienceDude (✉ • ✐ • ✍) 15:44, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
- Keep old versions and offer .svg as alternatives. I wish you had done these changes and upgrades using the existing "rugged" barnstar instead. You clearly have talent and motivation for this. Also, per Anomie, these are not truly .svg`s; did you upload .png copies and can you upload the originals instead? And finally, most of these do have to be discussed with Wikiprojects and such, as they were agreed upon that way. — HELLKNOWZ ▎TALK 16:30, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
- [I'm a wikinewsie] Good job on some excellent work there. However I'd prefer that we just keep two versions, newer awards could use the new version (or old, whatever the person giving the awards prefers). Awards currently in existence could use the old version. As for making them svg's, that'd be great if possible. Cheers. Bawolff (talk) 17:11, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
- Many of these new stars rather than being graphic improvements, such as cleaning up blurry edges and details to make them sharp, are illustration revamps, so you are mixing two approaches. I feel each star should be addressed on an individual basis for improvements. I think the intentions are good, but the method isn't necessarily the best way to go about this. As for the SVG questions being tossed around, these new stars appear to be vector-based in origin, likely created in Illustrator. If that is indeed the case, then exporting SVG versions to be displayed here will be a nonissue without altering the appearance. dtgriffith (talk) 17:21, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
- Several of the new ones are worse. old File:Barnstar Eraser.png is clearly a better representation than File:Eraser Barnstar Hires.png ; File:Rosetta Barnstar.png is more visually appealing than File:Rosetta Barnstar Hires.png ; File:WikiLinkBarnstar.PNG is clearer and less ugly than File:WikiLink Barnstar Hires.png ; File:Barnstar-RoyaltyNobility.png is clearer and has much better contrast than File:Royalty Barnstar Hires.png ; 76.66.195.196 (talk) 21:57, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
- Personally I don't see reason to change much of them. Some of the changes are a clear improvement, most seem to just be minor changes though. Personally I don't see why we need SVGs, they're almost always going to be used at one size, so scaling doesn't matter much. But if they are PNGs, they should be optimized at and uploaded using the "normal" size (which appears to be 111x107). There's no reason to have them so large. Mr.Z-man 22:39, 30 June 2010 (UTC)
- Most barnstar images are 111px as a remnant of the original barnstar being 111px; and almost all images derived from that are mostly 111px. The actual barnstar templates use 100px images, which is what matters. If anything, the current barnstars should be professionally resized to be crisp and clear at the 100px size. — HELLKNOWZ ▎TALK 22:49, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

- Example made. I performed this on The Editor's Barnstar. Users need only add "|alt" to the end of their subst: template to change the image to the new version. I have coded it in such a way that it should not break any barnstars which were transcluded rather than substituted. A comparison can be seen on this page.

- Oppose replacement per chaos5023, the new ones look like cheap plastic. The only improvement I can see is by the two barnstars (anime, philosophy) where the square background has been removed for more consistency. --Elekhh (talk) 22:18, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
- Comment. Some of the new ones look better, some the originals have more character, and some I'd have no issues with either. I think it should be up to the project concerned to take a view on each one that affects them - rather than imposing a new set across the board. So, I suggest you make them available via the relevant projects to make use of or not as they see fit. Done. I have now completed alternating all barnstars listed on WP:BARN which have an alternate version here, except for the Original Barnstar. I did not alt it because consensus seems to be that that barnstar should be left alone. This took a lot of work. I continue my work on the remastering of WikiBarnstars. Currently working on High-resolution versions of barnstars of national merit. I want to discuss with respected colleagues on the following issues:
- Flag to the top of the Barnstar should be portrait or landscape orientation? How it should be according to the rules of heraldry?
- It is worth-whether to impose special effect of tissue on the flag or not? Perhaps the barnstar with that effect is more realistic, but the color of the flag more dim. What do you think about it? Antonu (talk) 14:08, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
- Upgrade, but keep the old ones as an option per the barnstar discussion. ~NerdyScienceDude (✉ • ✐ • ✍) 14:03, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
- Provide as alternatives like above. The realistic/platic issue should be even more prominent here. Although the original quality is really lacking, these would look best with a realistic star, ribbon, and frame.— HELLKNOWZ ▎TALK 14:09, 7 July 2010 (UTC)
- Let the Projects decide. Each project should decide whether they want to use the new or old version as their barnstar. Either way (unless the project decides otherwise), we should keep whichever one they choose not to use as an alternate version. Also, many countries have specific rules for the display of their flags, and the usage of their colors on ribbons, and the flags in the Barnstars of National Merit should try to follow those rules. For example, the old American ribbon is far more correct than the new one, though it technically is still inaccurate (it should be a much thinner blue line and no stars displayed, or possibly 13 stars). --Quinxorin (talk) 00:02, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

They get to display stars, there's userboxes, etc. Unless you're proposing a Barnstar for "reaching 100 FA's" or something huge, then it's a mere duplicaton of the recognition already provided. - As barnstars have no specific set criteria, having an award for giving lots of them out could mean that someone is just sending them out willy-nilly. It encourages the poor use of barnstars, although it does have a slight positive. Unfortunately, the - outweighs the + (talk→ BWilkins ←track) 11:27, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

I have created this award for a specific user who seemed to deserve more recognition than any single barnstar could convey. While I am fine transcluding it when and where I may see appropriate I would offer it for a broader consideration and perhaps inclusion on this page.

- A previous discussion took place at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Plants/Archive37#Ugently required - a WikiProject Barnstar, but no action was taken.
--Gyrobo (talk) 14:34, 20 July 2010 (UTC)
- Not to sound too critical, but I don't think any designs are ready for a star just yet. The plants and star do not blend well and look like two separate overlaid images. Butterfly indeed has marginal relevance to botany. The last one gives very little accent to the plant, it's hidden behind the star. Second is not bad as concept, but looks too artificial because all leaves are exact copies. I suppose third is the best from the choice. — HELLKNOWZ ▎TALK

The various star-shaped flowers in the previous discussion would seem to be the obvious way to make a botany barnstar. Although a palmate leaf might be another option, e.g. [1] (a non-free image, but it shows the idea). Thomas Kluyver (talk) 09:40, 9 August 2010 (UTC)
