Input requested. Should the default size of post-nominal letters set by this template remain at 85% or be increased to 100%? -- Necrothesp (talk) 09:40, 26 March 2014 (UTC)

The above category has been proposed for renaming to Category:Recipients of the Navy Cross (United States) to disambiguate from the more recent Navy Cross (South Africa). As expected, those CfD regulars philosophically opposed to pretty much any ODM category are now calling for the category to be deleted rather than renamed.

Broader issue regarding ODM nominations at CfD: Regrettably, a call for deletion appears to be the new norm at CfD for any ODM categories raised. For any WP:ODM editors considering taking a category to CfD, even if it is just for housekeeping, be prepared with your arguments for why the category should not be deleted as it is almost inevitable that there will be a call for this to be the outcome (it would also be useful to drop a note here to let the ODM editor community know that there will be another ODM CfD debate (usually there is no effort made to alert the community who actually edit in the field when such CfDs are raised so these debates are frequently concluded with no subject matter expert input). Whilst deletion as an outcome is not inevitable (not all CfD regulars are opposed to all ODM category), it is a very real possibility if strong arguments are not presented. Based on several debates over the last six months, to avoid this fate I observe that the subject order/decoration is usually expected to be defining for all / nearly all recipients with typical checks including:

  • where the order/decoration sits in the country's honours list (seniority is not always a given for avoiding deletion - Category: Recipients of the Medaille Militaire was recently deleted when it was proposed for renaming to apply correct capitalisation);
  • whether certain classes of people are routinely awarded it (eg senior generals, heads of state, etc - this is usually interpreted as a reason for deletion);
  • whether it is referenced in recipients' Wikipedia article in all / nearly all cases; and
  • whether in all / nearly all of these cases it is mentioned in the article's lede.

This approach does not sit comfortably with this project's usual approach to ODM categories. AusTerrapin (talk) 16:19, 27 April 2014 (UTC)

Supernumary

Is Category:Supernumary Knights of the Order of the Holy Spirit misspelled, or does it mean something different in that context? The normal spelling is supernumerary. On the other hand, there is a published book with the same misspelling in the title. On the other other hand, the ad mentions Wikipedia, so maybe they didn't notice the spelling.

The category has 27 members, so even if it is misspelled, would it cause more problems than it's worth to fix it? Art LaPella (talk) 01:28, 19 May 2014 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

UK awards' order of precedence is confusing

Starting with the VC and clicking on the links at the bottom of the infobox, the links just go off at tangents.

The problem - or the way I see it is - there is no distinction between the orders of Knighthood and military decorations. Comparative lists pertaining to the Order of precedence in the UK's honour system.

Hence after the VC in precedence is (according to the class system) the Order of the Garter but that precludes the fact that this is a military bravery/valour award, so next lower is the GC and then the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal. As a casual reader, I am following the orders in relation to the article I am reading ie ones on military awards. Adding civilian or knighthoods decorations and orders is just throwing the lineage or logic all over the place.

Please take a look and see what I mean. Sometimes the next higher or lower is military related but then on other articles, an editor has decided the next higher or lower is an Order or civilian decoration eg Red Cross Class 1 etc.

In that respect the USA's list of bravery awards is much clearer to follow as that only adheres to valour in a military capacity and does not require the insertions of civilian decorations.

In conclusion the pages are confusing and need to be addressed so a casual reader such as myself can follow how a military award is related to other military medals (because the articles are about military subjects not the class system in the UK)

Maybe the infobox needs amending to accommodate the relationship between military and civil precedence but not by jumbling them together because at the moment that choice doesn't work. 81.132.174.34 (talk) 14:06, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

The order of wear, is the order of wear, it is published and easily referenced. If the articles don't follow order of wear in the infoboxes, I can see where that would be confusing. However, in the UK Order of Precedence is not the same as Order of Wear. That may be where the confusion comes from.
Take a look at Military awards and decorations of the United Kingdom. There is a summary from JSP761 Chapter 12. Military order of wear can be summed up as follows: The Victoria Cross and the George Cross; United Kingdom Orders; United Kingdom Decorations; United Kingdom Medals for Gallantry and for Distinguished Service; United Kingdom Operational Service Medals, United Nations Medals, and Medals of other recognised International Organisations; Coronation and Jubilee Medals; Long Service and Efficiency Awards; Commonwealth Orders, Decorations and Medals Instituted by The Sovereign; Commonwealth Orders, Decorations and Medals instituted since 1949 otherwise than by the Sovereign (including those of the States of Malaysia and the State of Brunei); Foreign Orders; Foreign Decorations; and Foreign Medals. WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Medal Display

Hi, I have created a template {{Medal Display}} which I am using for the display of South African Medals (ribbons) {{Medal Display/ZAR}}. I created it so that it is possible for others to create their own lists and use the same template. Just FYI. BoonDock (talk) 17:01, 24 January 2015 (UTC)

Notability of award holders

I'm trying to figure out which awards bestow notability. WP:ANYBIO tells me that a person having "received a well-known and significant award or honor" is notable. In the archives, I see it stated that it "has generally been established that recipients of any award lower than the CBE are not inherently notable, but holders of the CBE and above generally are". If that is the community consensus, can I make the following suggestions:

  • State this fact on the project page
  • Refer to that fact from the Wikipedia:Notability (people) page
  • Show an order of precedence of those awards that are higher than the CBE, and thus bestow notability.

Any thoughts? Schwede66 08:07, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

I have compiled a list of awards (or multiple awards) from certain countries that I consider to confer inherent notability under WP:ANYBIO #1. I would stress that this is a personal view and a work in progress, although it has certainly been established over many AfDs that what you say about the CBE and above is correct. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:13, 11 March 2015 (UTC)
What a useful piece of work that's tugged away in your userspace, Necrothesp. Any thoughts on starting the formal process of getting this adopted by the wider community, or is it still 'too early' to do so? Schwede66 17:24, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

Disagreement over how to present different reliable sources regarding the number of Medal of Honors awarded

You are invited to join the discussion at Talk:Medal of Honor#Number of Medal of Honor awards. Thanks. RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 00:17, 16 June 2015 (UTC)

Medal of Honor total

Different websites have different totals for the number of Medal of Honor awards but Wikipedia has four different totals (two calculated) for the Medal of Honor article. The Medal of Honor entries on the US Army Centre for Military History website are posted as a courtesy to their users and they are not responsible for the factual content of the citations. I amended the total to 3512 which is the addition of the totals of the Senate Committee of Veterans Affairs, the Congressional Research Service and the White House. I have emailed a request to the Congressional Medal of Honor Society to query their total of 3514. I first raised the issue in the talk page and only amended the total when I located an online source which I used as a reference. My change was undone. I reverted it since the original US Army Centre for Military History figure was obviously wrong. Anthony Staunton (talk) 01:17, 16 June 2015 (UTC)

Panic over. Everyone is now on the same page. The problem was two totals 3512 and 3514 from two good online sources. The Medal of Honor Historical Society total was 3512 which matches the total of the Senate Veterans Affairs committee print (1863 to 1978) plus the Congressional Research Service publication (1979 to 2014) plus the White House (2015). The Congressional Medal of Honor Society total was 3514 but when queried said their 'website has a coding error for totalling the number of recipients. Please see the attached document'. The document total was 3512 awards with 3493 individuals and 19 double awards. The document was titled MEDAL OF HONOR BREAKDOWN BY WAR AND SERVICE and I am sure anyone who wants a copy could email the society. Anthony Staunton (talk) 04:08, 17 June 2015 (UTC)
Please see WP:CANVASS. The above is a non-neutral attempt of canvassing. This is why the section above uses the Template:Please see template.--RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 05:28, 17 June 2015 (UTC)

Deletion of categories for recipients of orders

See Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2015 July 2. I cannot believe that nobody bothered to leave a notification of that discussion on this talkpage. Seems like something that needs wider discussion, as I really don't think these categories should be deleted. How long before we have deletion proposals for Category:Knights Commander of the Order of the British Empire or Category:Companions of the Distinguished Service Order or Category:Recipients of the Legion of Merit, which strike me as no more or less defining than the awards deleted here? -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:21, 17 July 2015 (UTC)

@Necrothesp:, this group contests deletion and slows down the process of the category deletionists. Where they see clutter many of us see building the web. I am not sure that many of them are able to discern the difference between awards under a national honours system and other trivial awards. EricSerge (talk) 15:46, 17 July 2015 (UTC)
That's clearly true, given most of those deleted are in no way trivial awards. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:08, 18 July 2015 (UTC)

Ambiguity in medal wear order - example included

I was reading up on the Vietnam Campaign Medal and in the Order Of Wear section, there is a table to indicate precedence. However, it's ambiguous what the order should be. Using the United States row for our example, I don't know whether the Vietnam Campaign medal precedes or is preceded by the Multinational Force and Observers Medal and is followed by or follows the Kuwait Liberation Medal. Existing information (layout edited for clarity):

Country: United States
Preceding: Multinational Force and Observers Medal
Following: Kuwait Liberation Medal

Found here: http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Vietnam_Campaign_Medal#Order_of_wear

I'd suggest it's as simple as changing the headings to something like:
Precedes and Follows
or
Preceded By and Followed By

However, I'm guessing this won't be the only page where the existing headings are used and since I'm mostly ignorant of the order medals should be worn, I thought it might be preferable to handball it to whoever is involved in this project.

Before I sign off, thanks to all you wonderful people working on this project. I know it's no small feat. (insert smiley face)

Mathsgirl (talk) 13:44, 28 September 2015 (UTC)

I neither support nor oppose such a change. I don't find the current system confusing, but perhaps to a lay reader it is. Was the wording originally chosen because of the differences between Order of Precedence vs. Order of Wear? (which in most cases, there is no difference).
I'm mainly replying to point out that the American example is not right (and I'll be fixing it on the page right after I finish leaving this message).
In the US Military, each branch of the military has a slightly different order of wear- though the slight differences are all higher up- ie they agree when it comes to the Vietnam Campaign Medal. It is in the category of "Foreign Military Service Awards." They are worn, grouped by country, in chronological order of the first acceptance (date of approval) (asides from the extremely rare cases where a service member has more than one award from the same country). The only chronologically earlier one's in that category, as far as I'm aware, are some rare, and sometimes of ambigous status, WWII service awards (though I suppose the Philippino one's would only be termed uncommon). Note that Korean War Service Medal wasn't approved untill 1999, so the VCM is the oldest one commonly encountered, thus it is usually the first in the category. The preceding category is Non-US (ie International) service awards (of which I'm not sure the MFOM is the last in that category).
That page is also incorrect in that it is the Saudi version of the Kuwait Liberation Medal, not the Kuwaiti version, that comes next.

    • I disagree. Many articles for heads of state in Wikipedia include a list of awards. Just as a random example, look at Haakon VII of Norway. It can equally be indicated that the articles does not establish any notability. And he could also have awarded some of these medals to himself as he was king of Norway. The issue is not if these categories should be kept or not. There has to be a rule which establishes when awards are to be mentioned and when not. I could also consider that a medal for military service during a war might be more important than Honorary citizen of Largs, Scotland or Honorary Colonel Norfolk Yeomanry – 11 June 1902 which are mentioned for King Haakon. I could find similar cases for many other heads of state articles. Afil (talk) 06:26, 7 February 2016 (UTC)
