[edit]

We seem to have many "fake" Sign ups. Perhaps best to ask for confirmation on talks see if accounts are actually active? Moxy🍁 20:52, 12 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

How do we tell if the sign ups are fake? I do notice that there are a lot of new accounts, but I was thinking that was just because the banner appears to all users, regardless of whether or not they are logged in. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 21:04, 12 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Lets set page up for :"Extended confirmed users" only? Moxy🍁 21:32, 12 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I would strongly oppose restricting sign ups to extended confirmed users only, if that's what you mean. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 23:10, 12 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm absolutely fine with having lots of new (potential) editors participating in this event. This is Wikipedia Day, and it's always been used in every location it's "celebrated" as an open invitation to anyone who is interested in our project. It's not restricted to editors, or extended confirmed editors. These types of open sessions often have the ability to build up local community editorship, and we should be happy to see lots of new names on the list. I think we should look at this as an opportunity to be gracious hosts who are enthusiastic about expanding our editorial corps, and helping people to determine if this is a good fit for them. As for me, I'm going to spend this evening working up a "brief history of Wikipedia" presentation, given the event. Risker (talk) 00:12, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
    Someone's pulling our leg Moxy🍁 01:42, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Could be. On the other hand, I've heard that other longer-standing Wikipedia Day meetups tend to attract a much larger crowd than usual (2-5x as many people), a lot of them newbies or people who are mainly readers. There's no way we'll get this many people there; but it isn't outlandish to think there will be more than just the dozen or so people who usually show up. Even at regular meetups, there are often 20% newbies. Risker (talk) 02:38, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm simply not buying coffee for individuals who will never show up. Moxy🍁 02:44, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough, Moxy. Taking a look at several other Wikipedia Day events, quite a few of them have an extraordinary number of people signing up. Risker (talk) 02:49, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Is it some sort of pop up when you register your name? The vast majority only have one edit to hear or two edits to their page and to hear? Moxy🍁 03:15, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If you are logged out, it will display this instead of the signup button, if that's what you're asking: To sign up for this event: Log in or create an account ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 03:40, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Is this a new thing? Are they advertising free coffee and donuts? LOL! Wikipedia : Meetup/Toronto/2024 October 20 Moxy🍁 03:56, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If we advertised free coffee and donuts, there'd probably be quite a bit more people :)
But no, it's not new. It wasn't used for the October 20 meetup, but it was used for Toronto Wikipedia Day 2024. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 06:21, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
new user ≠ fake account — attendance won't be 100% but for Wikipedia Day 2024, we had about 40 people sign up and about 85% of the people showed up. The regular organizers (Z1720, OhanaUnited, Legowerewolf...) are great with newbies, it should be a great day :) SophieWMCA (talk) 13:31, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Calling new accounts as "fake accounts" is the slam dunk case of biting newbies, and Moxy you should know better than this. It's very "Uncanadian" of you.

Just like last year, the banner shows up to registered and unregistered users through the CentralNotice banner. This is our once-a-year engagement to connect with Wikipedia readers, particularly in the Greater Toronto Area, who wants to know more about Wikipedia. It also encourages inactive editors to become active again by contributing to Wikipedia and other sister projects. Maybe they are not good writers but they have photography skills? Maybe someone is a frequent traveller or snowbird who can help us improve travel contents on Wikivoyage? As a multicultural country, maybe someone can contribute in non-English or French language to help diversify Wikipedia contributions in other languages, develop resiliency and help guard against community capture in those language projects? This event is intended to attract the broadest audience and help retain interested individuals to come to subsequent events in 2025. Setting up this page as "Extended confirmed users only" will not assist us on this mission, and may create echo chamber within the existing Wikimedia movement. Our other event announcements for rest of the year are done through Geonotice and only appear to those who logged in and check their watchlists. It's also good that new editors registered an account now and not at the event to avoid triggering Account Creation Throttle. OhanaUnitedTalk page 15:32, 13 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
