Introduction to the Wikipedia Project

Welcome to your Wikipedia project timeline. This page guides you through the steps you'll need to complete for your Wikipedia assignment, with links to training modules and your classmates' work spaces.

If you are here, you've successfully created an account and joined this course page using the enrollment link your instructor sent you. (Because of Wikipedia's technical constraints, some people may receive a message that they cannot create an account. To resolve this, they should try again off campus or the next day.)

Your course has been assigned a Wikipedia Expert. You can reach them through the Get Help button at the top of this page.

We'll use the following guides as we progress through the project. Begin to get oriented by reading the opening pages of each:

Assignment - Get started on Wikipedia

Get started by working through the training modules above before we meet for class.

In class - Thinking about Wikipedia
Milestones

This week everyone should have a Wikipedia account and a basic sense of the policies and software behind Wikipedia.

Week 3

Course meetings

All together now!

This week we'll work together as a class to improve the article on Digital rhetoric and to get more comfortable contributing to Wikipedia along the way. Next week, you'll be selecting an article to work on individually or in collaboration, so it's a good idea to be thinking about what you'll choose while we get our first edits out of the way.

To prepare for this week's workshops in class, please read the following:

Assignment - Evaluate Wikipedia's entry on "Digital rhetoric"

Once you have completed the exercise above, submit a link to your onwiki evaluation of Digital rhetoric via the ELMS discussion board.

In class - Discussion
In class - Exercise
In class - Adding citations
Assignment - Reflect on your first edits

Via the ELMS discussion board, submit 1) a link to your contributions page showing your edits to Digital rhetoric and 2) a one paragraph reflection on the most interesting, surprising, important things you learned about digital rhetoric and/or technofeminism by editing Wikipedia's article on Digital rhetoric.

Milestones

This week everyone has evaluated and contributed to a Wikipedia article.

Week 4

Assignment - Peer review one article

Complete the training module above and peer review one of your classmates' article drafts.

Milestones

Every student has finished reviewing their assigned article, making sure that every article has been reviewed.

Assignment - Respond to your peer reviews

You probably have some feedback from other students and possibly other Wikipedians. Consider their suggestions, decide whether it makes your work more accurate and complete, and edit your draft to make those changes.

Resources:

  • ** Editing Wikipedia, pages 12 and 14
    • Reach out to your Wikipedia Expert if you have any questions.

Once you've revised your article draft, post to the ELMS discussion board 1) a link to your revised draft along with 2) a one paragraph reflection on what/why you did/didn't revise in response to the feedback you received.

Week 6

Course meetings
Tuesday, 3 March 2020   |   Thursday, 5 March 2020
Assignment - Begin moving your work to Wikipedia

Now that you've improved your draft based on others' feedback, it's time to move your work live - to the "mainspace." Complete the training module above and start moving new content a bit at a time.

Resource: Editing Wikipedia, page 13

FYI
Assignment - Continue improving your article

Now's the time to revisit your text and refine your work. You may do more research and find missing information; rewrite the lead section to represent all major points; reorganize the text to communicate the information better; or add images and other media.

Once your article draft is all in mainspace, you've completed the modules above, and you are satisfied with your work, post a link to the live article on the ELMS discussion board.

Milestones

This week everyone moved their article contributions into mainspace.
