This is a graduate-level introduction to Tibetan Buddhist traditions based on sources in translation, with an emphasis on the historical development of the major Tibetan Buddhist orders and their distinctive practice traditions. Course topics will include: Tibetan tantric systems and rituals; Tibetan innovations in Buddhist philosophy; Tibet’s distinctive approaches to religion and politics; Tibetan rituals of space and locality; and Tibetan scholasticism. A central goal of the course is to give students the opportunity to become familiar with current secondary research in the field and develop the ability to distinguish sound, current academic research from publications marred by lineage biases, political ideologies, popularization and exoticization, or outmoded research. The Wikipedia assignment is an ideal way to develop skills in identifying high quality sources, crafting solid, evidence-based summaries of complex material, and sharing the fruit of these skills with a non-specialist audience.
