This foundation course provides an introduction to the history of PTSD and presents theories of trauma, resilience, stress and coping. Students will explore cultural factors that affect research and conceptualizations of trauma disorders and treatment, including recent controversies. The current state of psychophysiological, structural and functional neuroimaging, endocrinological, genetic, and molecular biological studies that pertain to PTSD will be discussed. The readings, discussions, multimedia presentations, and assignments will also acquaint students with ethical issues and cultural considerations that inform differential diagnoses, shape treatment planning, and guide implementation of evidence-based therapies. How research and practice in trauma psychology contributes to the development, administration, and evaluation of programs and policies to promote and sustain mental health will be addressed.
