This course surveys the diverse production of African artists working across the continent and its Diasporas, from the era of decolonization through the present. We will chart the evolution of post-colonial artistic Modernisms alongside political independence movements in nations such as Nigeria, Algeria, Sudan, and Senegal, and examine the role of art and photography during the apartheid era in South Africa. The course then surveys recent work by leading African artists working in various mediums and artistic modalities today, such as Julie Mehretu, William Kentridge, Wangechi Mutu, Zanele Muholi, Yinka Shonibare, and others whose practices explore a range of issues surrounding migration, gender and sexual identity, postcolonial history, the body, urbanization, and environmentalism.
