Welcome to the seventh Bugle for 2020!
On 15 June we passed our target of 1,250 Featured Articles with the promotion of James P. Hagerstrom! Next stop, 1,500 FAs!
Welcome to Aardvarkrocket, Lindjosh, Hog Farm (belatedly, many of us already know Hog Farm from his ACW work), Path-x21, Field Marshal Aryan, EDJT840, Xfyre99, Jayreborn, Yy958, 49lk, RedRiver660 and Matt0057, all of whom joined the project in June.
As the article news section notes, June was another fairly quiet month for new A-class articles. However, it saw three excellent images in our scope promoted to featured picture status. To put the foot on the A-class article promotion accelerator, more reviews would be helpful. Given the challenges in accessing sources in many parts of the world due to the pandemic, editors could also more actively seek assistance and pitch in to help others.
On the topic of the pandemic, Nick-D has posted a slightly rueful review of a book he bought on Hadrian's Wall to prepare for a now-cancelled holiday in the book reviews section. Hawkeye7 has also shared his views of a recent work on the senior levels of the British military during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
In response to the prominence of anti-racism movements globally at present, Nick-D has contributed an op-ed reflecting on how he, and others, could be more mindful of ensuring that Wikipedia articles on military history topics reflect diverse experiences and perspectives.
Finally, as unbelievable as it may seem, we are nearing the end of the XIX Coordinator Tranche. Nominations and voting for the XX Coordinator Tranche will open in September, and as always all project members are encouraged to participate either by voting for coordinators or by running for one of the open positions. The project has two academy essays that may be of use to you: becoming a coordinator and advice from former coordinators. Please feel free to ask questions of the current coordinators as well.
Your editors, Ian Rose (talk) and Nick-D (talk)
Milestones |
In another Featured Article milestone, Hawkeye7 recently had his 80th FA promoted, MAUD Committee. He is the fourth-highest project member on the all-time Wikipedia-wide FA tally behind Sturmvogel 66, Parsecboy, and Ian Rose, and in seventh place overall. Well done Hawkeye! Congratulations also go to Gog the Mild who has just passed the 25-FA milestone, all in just over 18 months!
In A-class news, special congratulations to Wehwalt on being awarded their first A-Class Medal. While Wehwalt is not a member of the project, you may know them as the most prolific Featured Article creator on English Wikipedia on a wide range of topics including art, finance, politics, etc. Wehwalt has contributed to, wait for it... 195 FAs.
In reviewing news, Sturmvogel 66 recently completed his 800th (!) Good Article review. By far our most prolific GA reviewer, Sturm has made an incredible contribution to the Good Article process in the nearly 13 years he has been editing Wikipedia. Many thanks for your consistent effort from the whole project membership! The April-to-June quarterly reviewing results are in, with a total of 237 reviews completed. Peacemaker67 topped the list with 59 reviews, and CPA-5, Gog the Mild, Buidhe and Sturmvogel 66 also received the WikiChevrons for more than 14 reviews. Another 16 reviewers chipped in, and thanks to everyone for their efforts, you are critical to the quality throughput of the project.
Awards and honours |
- The A-Class medal has been awarded to:
- Wehwalt for Ernest Augustus I of Hanover, David Scott, and Alfred Worden.
Contest department |
- The June round of the article improvement contest attracted ten participants, with 107 articles being improved. First place went to Sturmvogel_66 with 154 points from 41 articles and they were awarded the Wikichevrons. Hog Farm came second with 119 points from 19 articles, for which they received the Writer's Barnstar. Also scoring were Catlemur, Djmaschek, Gog the Mild, Kges1901, Lineagegeek, Parsecboy, Peacemaker67 and Zawed. Congratulations and thanks to all participants. You can self-assess up to C-class for the contest, but B-class assessments need to be done by another editor. This is best organised by posting at WP:MHAR. Make sure to add your entries for the July contest as soon as they are promoted, this allows the coords to check them progressively.
