Strategic Goal 1
[edit]Increase the quality and quantity of coverage of subjects that are currently underrepresented on Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects, with a particular focus on cultural content.
Outcomes
[edit]- First new Wikipedia article created by Gender and Equality Archives PhD intern, Francesca Vavotici: Helen Lowe (chartered accountant) following training on 6 November 2018.
- Worked with Navino Evans at Histropedia and helped facilitate the creation of a new Women's Suffrage in Scotland timeline in a new collaboration between Learning, Teaching Services and the Library & University Collections team. The timeline brings together information from new Wikipedia articles written in the last year by Wiki Women in Red editors, open images on Wikimedia Commons and structured data in Wikidata.
- Met with Chris Fleet at National Library of Scotland on 14 December to show me how we might work with historical maps and open data to plot the remaining locations of accused witches in Scotland. We are now recruiting a Data and Visualisation intern to work on this.
- Liaised with National Records of Scotland to openly release an image of Edinburgh suffragette Maude Edwards who famously slashed at the King's portrait in 1914. Created a new template to make any future National Records of Scotland image releases consistent and automatically link back to their online catalogue.
- Created a new template to make any future University of Edinburgh Centre for Research Collections image releases consistent and automatically link back to their online catalogue with a link to a IIIF Mirador image viewer.

- Edinburgh Gothic: hosted Sheffield University Gothicists, Lauren Nixon and Mary Going, at our Edinburgh Gothic event for Robert Louis Stevenson Day on 13 November 2018. They took part in the Edinburgh Gothic editathon in the afternoon.

- Women in Red monthly workshop: hosted monthly meetup on 6 December to create more biographies of notable women on Wikipedia. This event was attended by Nick Sheppard User:OAnick and Kirstine McDermid User:Kirstinemcdermid from Leeds University Library.

- 5 new articles created including accused witches Margaret Burges & Issobell Young, social historian [[Marion Cleland Lochhead], Scottish suffragette Helen Ogston known for interrupting David Lloyd George at a meeting in Albert Hall and subsequently holding off the stewards with a dog whip.
- 25 articles edited. Wikidata items created and improved so that 9 more Scottish suffragettes could be added to our Women's Suffrage in Scotland timeline.

- Met with Kat Breen, Database Assistant at Edinburgh College of Art, and Pauline Ward, Research Data Support Assistant at the University of Edinburgh, on 13 December 2018 to plan out a metadata crosswalk of how to import a subset of the Tower Block archive images into Datashare and from there importing the images to Wikimedia Commons and linking to structured data in Wikidata. This is an ongoing project which I have discussed with Jason Evans, Wikimedian at the National Library of Wales.

[edit]- Ruth Jenkins, Academic Support Librarian at the University of Edinburgh, submitted an abstract to the 9th National Scottish Medical Education Conference about the Reproductive Biology Hons. Wikipedia assignment. This was sadly rejected.
- Submitted revised case study of Translation Studies MSc Wikipedia assignment for the New Case Studies of Opennesss in the Language Classroom book, incorporating Lorna Campbell's suggested amendments.
- Submitted abstract for a 45 minute presentation on Embedding Wikimedia in the currciulum to the 2019 LILAC Conference. Has been accepted.
- Submitted abstract for a 30 minute presentation on Embedding Wikimedia in the currciulum: digital transformation and data to the UCISA Leadership Conference 2019. Has been accepted.
- Submitted abstract for a presentation on Wikimedia in the Classroom – how students are making links with learning, and linked data, to help shape the open web to the University of Edinburgh's Learning and Teaching Conference in June 2019. This has been accepted for a 10 minute Did you know? presentation.
- Delivered presentation on Teaching Data literacy with the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft database and Wikidata at the Dealing with data Conference on 23 November 2018.
- Hosted Edinburgh Gothic talks for Robert Louis Stevenson Day 2018 with invited speakers from University of Sheffield's Centre for the History of the Gothic, Lauren Nixon and Mary Going. The event was attended by 20-30 people.
- Hosted Facts and Fallacies: Cultural Representations of Mental Health event for Student Wellbeing Week which involved a series of 6 short talks chaired by Professor Jolyon Mitchell and Rosie Taylor, a student in Biological Sciences and the WellComm Kings student support group. The talks, including Wellcome Library Wikimedian Alice White, were well attended with the room at capacity of 50-60 attendees.
- Helped plan and facilitated the Screening the Inner World: Mental Health and Emotion panel discussion for student Wellbeing Week in the evening. Chaired by David Sorfa, Senior Film Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh. This was a well-attended event with 70-80 attendees.
- Hosted the two day Wikidata training event for Wikimedia UK staff and Wikimedians in Residence in the Lister Building and David Hume Tower on 16-17 November 2018. The Survey of Scottish Witchcraft database was used to demonstrate bulk imports to Wikidata.
- Met with Nick Sheppard and Kirstine McDermid from Leeds University Library on 6-7 December 2018 to discuss how Leeds University can explore how Wikimedia projects like Wikipedia and Wikidata can help with the dissemination of research outputs. Martin Poulter, Wikimedian in Residence at the Bodleian Library, University of Oxford, joined the conversation via Skype.
- Attended Introduction to Open Science, Plan S and FAIR session hosted by Theo Andrew, Scholarly Communications Manager at the University of Edinburgh, on 7 December 2018.
- Attended launch of Women's Suffrage in Scotland exhibition at the University of Edinburgh Library on 29 November 2018 and introduced invited guests to interact with the new Wikidata-driven Histropedia timeline of Women's Suffrage of Scotland on the smart table.

Outcomes
[edit]- Met with Kirsty Stewart, University of Edinburgh Careers Service, on 27 November 2018 to discuss Wikipedia editing being part of the Edinburgh Award. She greenlit this idea provided we could structure it sufficiently to meet the Edinburgh Award requirements.
- Gave feedback to all the student editors participating on the Global Health MSc project to add 180-200 words to a Global Health related article on Wikipedia. 31 student editors given introductory training. 7,500 words added to 18 articles. The edits made to the Obesity page for example will be viewed some 2,800 times per day.
- Held drop-in clinics for Translation Studies MSc students on 12 and 26 November 2018.
- Held final drop-in clinic for Translation Studies MSc students on 3 December 2018. 9 attendees.
- All 24 students on the Translation Studies MSc published a brand new 2000 word (approx.) article into a different language Wikipedia by the course deadline of 7 December 2018. Check out the articles here
- Held Wikidata workshop at the Digital Scholarship Centre at the Centre for Research Collections on 7 December 2018. 2 attendees.
- Held Wikisource workshop at the University of Edinburgh Library on 4 December 2018. 1 attendee.
- Reviewed the Global Health MSc Wikipedia assignment with course leader, Felix Stein, via Skype on 15 November 2018. Positive reaction on the whole, some things to review for next iteration to make it run more smoothly.
- Held Wikidata workshop on 21 November 2018 for three Data Science for Design MSc students working on the project to import more data from the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft database into Wikidata. Karen Howie, Technology Enhanced Learning Team Manager, demonstrated how to query the original MS Access database in order to export what was needed. The students delivered an end-of-project presentation to their peers on 29 November 2018. As a result of their work, we now have a map of 1,130 places of residence of accused witches in Scotland 1563-1736 (a subset of 3,219 accused):
- Continued to liaise with Hannah Evans and Sara Thomas (Wikimedia UK) as well as Nicky Greenhorn and Sonia Virdi (graphic design) about developing a new Case Studies Booklet of Wikimedia in the Classroom.

- The import of thesis collection data to Wikidata from the Edinburgh Research Archive is to go ahead now Library Developer Mike Bennett's contract is continuing. Completed necessary preparatory work; just awaiting Mike testing the tool on Wikidata's test site that converts ALMA library catalogue data into a Wikidata-friendly import.
- Importing a subset of the Tower Block archive images into Datashare and from there importing the images to Wikimedia Commons and linking to structured data in Wikidata. This is an ongoing project which I have discussed with Jason Evans, Wikimedian at the National Library of Wales.
- Continuing to add more data to Wikidata from the Survey of Scottish Witchcraft database. Recruiting a Data and Visualisation intern (a Witchfinder General) to work on geographical aspect of the import.
- Co-hosting a Wikipedia Diversithon with the student Wellcome Kings group and UnCoverEd student researchers to add more biographies of notable LGBT+ professionals and BAME professionals missing from the online encyclopedia.
