Request #1
A template for high schools (or even all institutions of education). I was looking for one and didn't see it, but:
- am I looking in the wrong place?
- am I asking in the wrong place?
- should I be the one doing it? If so, how?
I know that there are lots of pages on different U.S. High schools. I just didn't see any common theme.
Gnirts 02:46, 13 August 2005 (UTC)
- Look in Portal:Schools, they probably have it there.--Atlantima 18:55, 6 November 2005 (UTC)
- See Template:Infobox School and the discussion page there. --CBDunkerson 03:03, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
Extended Biography Template
I would like an extended biography template that has more than simply dates of birth and death. In particular I would like to have slots for standard biblographic data such as:
- Education
- Nationality
- Occupation(s)
The advantage of having this in template form is that it is then possible to build better query interfaces and would eventually allow a large number of categories to be dispensed with such as Irish Engineers which is really just the intersection of two categories that could each be compiled automatically by a bot. Equally a lot of silly lists could be avoided. For more info on these ideas see my user page.
The existing template seems to be very limited, am I just looking in the wrong place?
One objection to this might be performance but I would rather look into ways to improve performance. For example locking the template to prevent graphiti designed to cause a massive sequence of collateral edits. --Gorgonzilla 20:44, 18 August 2005 (UTC)
Number of Contributions
I would like a template that displays the numer of edits a user had made. I know Wikipeda has a way of counting edits. I have made a "dummy template" below to illistrate what I want. A "dummy template" is not actually a template, it is a Divbox that has been placed into the article.
Would expand into
The number 00 represents the number of edits that apply to the coresponding edit types, it is not necessarily going to always be zero, or two digits (a real zero would look like 0). "Articles edited" means the number of aricles that the user has edited at least once, including article creations. The same principle applies to Talk, Project, and template pages.
this is just a suggestion, It is less likely a completed virsion (if any) would resemple this "dummy template"
The problem is that I have no idea where to get those numbers from. Is there a way? or would an Admin have to create a TOTALEDITS function that returns a single numerical value (number of edits)?
— Kjammer ⌂ 08:57, 2 September 2005 (UTC)
- Perhaps something similar to Kate's tool. — Kjammer ⌂ 06:48, 16 September 2005 (UTC)
- This would be nifty, but wouldn't it put a terrible load on the servers once it became popular, as I imagine would happen? Especially if people started adding it with their sigs in talk pages? If anyone implements this, I hope they will put it on their own website, and write the template to use of their own CPU cycles :-/ If anyone is willing to do this, I think this would be a nifty template.---CH (talk) 01:28, 21 November 2005 (UTC)
- There is no way to implement this through templates alone. The edit count tools perform queries against the database - a function which cannot be performed by a template. Thus, any data to be displayed here would have to be garnered through the use of such a tool and then manually updated regularly. See Template:User edits for an existing example of such a 'manual input' edit count template. --CBDunkerson 03:03, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
Photoshop
I would appreciate a vanity template for a Babel tag that says "I am (a beginning/intermediate/expert) Photoshop user." Thanks for your help. Denni☯ 00:48, 16 September 2005 (UTC)
- for anyone who decides to make one, you might want to use the template/image I put together for User:UBX/Photoshop2ArgentiumOutlaw 22:25, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

SectionCopy
I don't know if there's another way to do this (if so, please tell me: talk), but I've often found that I need to copy certain information between articles. Besides this being tedious, it also causes problems, for instance when one instance of the information is updated, and then the copy remains untouched. It also means that correctly updating pieces of information across WikiPedia involves multiple article edits.
- Here's an example:
- On the Stargate SG-1 page, there is information about when each Season of the show is released on DVD. This information is also available, in less detail, on the List of Stargate SG-1 episodes page, which lists each of the aforementioned Seasons.
What I want to be able to do is, on the List of Stargate SG-1 episodes page, add Stargate SG-1 and then have that section of the Stargate SG-1 actively rendered into the List of Stargate SG-1 episodes article.
Optionally, it would be even more helpful to be able to copy just small sections of sections, by placing marker templates in the source article. So, for instance:
- Source Article#Section
Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
open
Important Bit
close
Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
- Destination Article#Section
Blah blah blah blah blah blah
Source Article
Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
Obviously the open and close tags are invisible on the actual page.
This is 'SectionCopy' only because we don't want full articles to be copied across WikiPedia; if you need to copy more than a section then you're doing something wrong.
If this is already available, I'd love to know about it, and if it's not, why on earth not!? This would be so helpful, and thankyou to anyone who codes this. --alfakim 21:17, 29 September 2005 (UTC)
- It isn't possible with current software to display a portion of some other article in this way. However, the functionality you are looking for can be accomplished by putting the text to be displayed in 2+ articles into a template and then calling that template in each. --CBDunkerson 20:39, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
User ar-0
Can someone please make a language template for user ar-0? Anyone who knows Arabic can do this, just take {t1|User ar-1}} and edit it to resemble User en-0:) I don't know enough Arabic to make this. -- User:Ynhockey 22:33, 23 October 2005 (UTC)
Ok I got someone to write this template, but it should probably be wikified. See User ar-0 -- [[User:Ynhockey] 23:01, 23 October 2005 (UTC)
Aqua template
I copied the following from Village pump assistance. I'd be grateful for any help.Chelman 20:51, 31 October 2005 (UTC)
I was thinking of developing a dynamic (sweetwater)aquarium guide template similar to the taxobox. Per species of fish one can add:
temperature ph range general hardness range carbonate hardness range whether the fish is a bottom, surface or 'middle' dweller whether it requires flowing water ease of keeping ease of breeding
Preferably this would use graphic icons.
I wonder whether there is a place on wikipedia where i can experiment with dynamic templates? And is there anyone who would be willing to provide assistance?
Chelman 15:30, 31 October 2005 (UTC)
Well....actually i got down to it and managed to put down an early version. you can check the template out by adding the following to an aquarium fish-species page (use the preview mode ;) :

I would be most grateful for any and all suggestions on how to improve the template.
Chelman 16:58, 31 October 2005 (UTC)
- This looks like a good start. If you have questions for improving it please let us know. --CBDunkerson 20:39, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
Revert template
Could a template be made for when you revert some edits? Maybe something like this:
12.34.56.78
which would generate the text:
"reverted edits by 12.34.56.78 to last version by Wikiuser"
The template could have an extra optional argument for providing a reason for the revert.
I have a feeling this template might not be possible with the current version of MediaWiki. Are templates even allowed in edit summaries? --ColdFeet 08:23, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
- I second this request. Though you'd need to make it mandatory to use it as a "subst:", otherwise you'd probably bog down the server pretty badly. --Miketwo 02:13, 19 November 2005 (UTC)
- Templates do not work in edit summaries. However, features like this can be gained from user scripts. --CBDunkerson 20:39, 18 March 2006 (UTC)
ArXiv template, LLR template plez
Hi, currently many research papers in math/physics also exist as arXiv eprints, and citations to the arXiv version is most useful for Wikipedia since these are available permanently on-line. For the benefit of those editing math/physics articles, I have two requests:
1. A template which when called like
- *
produces
- Roberts, M. D., Spacetime Exterior to a Star: Against Asymptotic Flatness. Version dated May 16, 2002.
Here, please note that all arXiv preprints are accessed via an abstract page which has a url of form http://www.arxiv.org/abs/ followed by a section like "gr-qc", followed by a number like "9811093" in which the first two digits encode the year that the preprint was first submitted. If you look at the cited page, you can see that this particular preprint has been modified five times, and I am citing the most recent version. This example shows why the year indicated by the prefix does not always suffice, although I think the date and year could be made optional arguments for this template.
2. A new argument for which when called like
-
produces
- Bicak, Jiri (2000). Selected exact solutions of Einstein's field equations: their role in general relativity and astrophysics. Lect. Notes Phys. 540: 1-126. ArXiv version
Regarding WikiProject GTR, the website Living Reviews in Relativity provides high-quality peer-reviewed review papers available on-line. Naturally, these tend to be much cited. So for benefit of this project-in-formation, I request:
3. A template which when called like
- *
produces
- Gönner, Hubert F. M. On the History of Unified Field Theories. Living Reviews in Relativity. Version dated August 10, 2005.
Here, note that all LLR papers have a url of form http://relativity.livingreviews.org/open?pubNo= followed by a code like "lrr-2004-2" (second review published in 2004). (Note: on second thought, this seems to involve a cgi-script. I don't much about that, but before writing the template, our expert should perhaps consider whether it would be really bad idea to try to offer a citation-specific url instead of the front page of this site. CH (talk))
NOTE: Actually, the standard url of Living Reviews articles is http://www.livingreviews.org/<jrn-id>-<year>-<pub-no>, e.g. http://www.livingreviews.org/lrr-2004-2 FS
Crucial question: these templates would be extremely useful to me and I think to others. But what if someone nominates them for deletion? If they were approved for deletion, would this destroy all citations which had used these templates? Or would the admin deleting the template make sure to migrate all citations to a new template? ---CH (talk) 17:08, 20 November 2005 (UTC)
- This all looks a bit confusing, but I'm gonna give it a go. As for you last crucial question the answer is possibly yes (they may all be destroyed), but this depends on a host of things. The way to prevent this will be that I code the template well and that you always substitute it. I'll detail that in a sec once I've made the templates.-- Alfakim -- talk 16:41, 12 April 2006 (UTC)
- journal reference is deprecated. However I have created Eprint reference and LRR reference. See their discussion pages for information about how to use them.-- Alfakim -- talk 16:41, 12 April 2006 (UTC)
- By the way I was a bit annoyed that the title of LRR kept changing from LRR to LLR all throughout this request.-- Alfakim -- talk 16:43, 12 April 2006 (UTC)
- Please have a look at category:citation templates. See also template:cite journal and template:cite arXiv, which I created per request of CH . --Ligulem 18:14, 12 April 2006 (UTC)
Automatic navigational templates
I would like a template that, based on a category name passed to it, produces a navigational template. Thanks! :) --Unforgettableid | Talk to me 04:14, 27 November 2005 (UTC)
- That is impossible. Circeus 02:42, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
- You must not be using very sophisticated AI =) Ardric47 08:05, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
- To clarify - there is no way for a template to automatically access the contents of a category in a format which can then be turned into a navigation box. It would be possible to create a 'generic' navigational template which would accept a list of articles as parameters, but that list would have to be manually created and maintained. Scripts or database queries could be set up to help automate such a process, but the easiest way in most cases might be to get the 'What links here' for the category and edit that into a parameter list.
- I went ahead and created a generic navigational template at Template:Navbox generic. --CBDunkerson 11:52, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
- Great! I appreciate it. I mentioned it at the top of Navigational templates to make it easier for ppl to find the quickest way to create nav templates. :) --unforgettableid | talk to me 03:03, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
We need a template for these articles in which we can state:
- The compliance of this article with Wikipedia content policies of neutrality, verifiability, and no original research is disputed.
Current dispute templates are either focuses on WP:NPOV or Factual accuracy. But many articles may be NPOV but fail the other Wikipedia content policies such as WP:V and/or WP:NOR. ≈ jossi ≈ t • @ 03:51, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
Template for Language Speakers
Can we get a template that identifies speakers of different languages? I would particularly like one that identifies Wikipedians who speak Esperanto (Vikipediistoj kiu parolas Esperanton). Tfleming 23:32, 10 January 2006 (UTC)
- I noticed you're already using the UN Infobox in your user page. Is the language infobox (Template:User_eo) suitable? Incidentally, I think the user language infoboxes kicked off the infobox trend. PoptartKing 21:17, 12 January 2006 (UTC)
Template for inappropriate citations
Wikipedia lacks templates for articles and sections whose citations are inappropriate, such as interpretive statements that point to a primary document, assertions based upon irrelevant data, or citations that misconstrue a secondary source's meaning.
Would someone with appropriate skills create a template to say, "This article or section contains inappropriate citations. References cited may not support the claims of the text. Please improve the article or discuss the issue on the talk page."
I'd appreciate the help. Regards, Durova 23:33, 13 January 2006 (UTC)

People
I tried to look for a template of a single person. Could you make one? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Mattiuscn (talk • contribs) .
- Hi. Right now there are different templates for different kinds of people. For instance, President and Pope. The closest I have seen to a generic 'person' template would probably be Infobox Celebrity. Does that serve for what you are looking for? If not, what sort of information would you want displayed? --CBD ☎ ✉ 18:47, 27 January 2006 (UTC)
Featured Article
Would it be a worthwhile idea for there to be a featured article template? If I were to use the Random article feature, I might want to know if I stumbled upon a featured article before I mosied on by. Stephen 21:26, 6 February 2006 (UTC)

Academic Impact
I'm sure the template form exists, but I haven't been able to find it. Basically what I want is a template of the form:
Academic Impact | |
Notable teachers: Alfred North Whitehead |
Notable students: Donald Davidson David Lewis Daniel Dennett |
(This example would go in the article W.V.O. Quine.) So I would need to have a template form flexible enough to have lists of indeterminate size in each of the two given areas.

Template:FAOL is a widely used template in talk pages to point out to featured articles in other languages. eg:
However, if an article have many featured equivalent in other languages, many templates would be added, encumbering the talk page (see Talk:Adolf Hitler).
So Could someone help me in improving this template so that is takes conditional parameters over the number of languages without creating FAOL-1, FAOL-2, FAOL-3... different templates for each number of other languages article. It would be like this:
Thank you. CG 10:42, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
- I made some changes to allow this. See Talk:Adolf Hitler for an example and Template talk:FAOL for more information. --CBDunkerson 20:25, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
Investor relations template
I think it is a very interesting thing to know about (at least the bigger) corporations who they are owned by and who owns them. Ours is a capitalist world and these relations are essential to see relations between 'global players'. At least for US companies the neccessary data is public and could be obtained from the SEC. General Electric already has a list of subsidiaries, for example.85.182.0.97 12:10, 23 February 2006 (UTC)
- This seems more like a WikiProject to review and update all of the corporation articles with the proper information. Wikipedia:Companies, corporations and economic information is an existing Wikiproject for coordinating this kind of company info. To help with that I added 'parent' and 'subsid' parameters to Infobox company as a possible place to store the information. --CBDunkerson 13:28, 23 February 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, that's (nearly) exactly what I was looking for. As soon as I can spare a little time I'm gonna register and fill some of those templates. :) 85.182.7.61 01:57, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
Vulgar/Offensive template
In response to some comments on Talk:Felching, I would like to request a template, similar to the spoiler template, that would mark potentially offensive material before it is read. I'm not talking about material discussing possibly offensive viewpoints; I'm talking about text, such as that at Felching and Queef, that may cause offense because of the actual language used. I was grossed out by even the first couple of lines of Felching; I would greatly have preferred the chance to not have read it. Something like "Warning: The following material may be considered vulgar and/or offensive by some." -- Calion | Talk 02:15, 25 February 2006 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, this is a perennial complaint against established standards. See Wikipedia:No disclaimer templates. I think that some means of allowing users to 'opt out' of certain types of content would be beneficial to Wikipedia, but to date no such effort has been accepted and any template created for this would certainly be deleted. --CBDunkerson 14:36, 25 February 2006 (UTC)
"Currently undergoing complete rewrite"
I have seen before, a template that goes along the lines of "This article is currently undergoing a complete re-write". But I am finding it incredibly difficult to find it now. Has it been deleted? Does anyone know where it is? And a related question: how can I use the search function outside of the mainspace? -- Run! 17:47, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
- I think you're looking for inuse. For searching there is a 'Search' section of your 'Preferences' which allows you to determine which name-spaces to search by default. There is also a namespace list at the bottom of any completed search where you can change the selected namespaces (and/or search term). --CBDunkerson 19:14, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
