Position of other lapped cars in Abu Dhabi

[edit]

It's surprisingly hard to research: When the five lapped cars between Verstappen and Hamilton were allowed to overtake in Abu Dhabi towards the end of the safety car phase - what was the exakt position of the remaining three lapped cars, which were not allowed to overtake? --KnightMove (talk) 07:17, 17 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This site has lots of data; perhaps you can reconstruct the positioning during the safety laps (53-57). --Jayron32 14:03, 17 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not 100% certain, but I believe they were trailing the #6 car (Valtteri Bottas), and thus were not in a position to interfere with the re-start. The five lapped cars that were asked to pass the leaders in order to move out of the way were all between #1 Lewis Hamilton and Bottas (and I believe three of the five were between Hamilton and #2 Verstappen). Letting lapped card pass the leaders so that they can move to the back of the field is the usual practice in such situations; the big issue in this particular race was that, initially, the race director had decided not to do so, then changed his mind just before the re-start. If he had made it clear immediately that this would be done, no one would have batted an eye. Xuxl (talk) 14:10, 17 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Apparently all of the lapped cars that were allowed to lap themselves were between Hamilton and Verstappen, according to several sources like DailyMail, where it is also stated that Ricciardo was the first driver not allowed to lap, and that he was directly behind Verstappen. This only leaves Lance Stroll and Mick Schumacher as open question. --KnightMove (talk) 16:07, 17 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
