American football vs rugby for concussions

[edit]

I was reading about how concussions are a large and ongoing problem in the NFL (American football). I was wondering if rugby has a similar problem since it is also a very physical sport. RudolfRed (talk) 22:51, 12 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This paper compares the incidence of concussions in soccer and rugby football, with 1.08/1000 hrs for the former an 6.9/1000 hrs for the latter. You might also be interested in this Science Friday from a while ago about brain injuries in the NFL - it's notable in that it talks about sub-concussive brain injuries, which may never the less accumulate into substantial damage with enough repetitions. -- Finlay McWalterTalk 23:24, 12 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This article mentions (but doesn't really specify enough) several studies which suggest American football and rugby football have about the same incidence of concussions, or that rugby has slightly more. -- Finlay McWalterTalk 23:55, 12 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
