Topics

[edit]
  • A user group organizes Wikipedians around a shared attribute, like our location in Minnesota
  • We hope that reviving the Minnesota User Group can support:
    • Recruiting new editors, especially younger folks
    • Programs at schools and universities, such as the tribal college edit-a-thons
    • Connecting GLAM institutions to Wikipedia, such as small town historical societies
    • Involving underrepresented communities such as Hmong, Somali, Dakota, and Ojibwe
    • Improving coverage of Minnesota-related topics
  • To revive the user group we need three officers, regular meetings, and folks willing to attend and support initiatives
  • Pingnova shared his areas of interest and why it's important to contribute to Wikipedia about minority topics
    • Suggestion to use the Rondo library's collection of sources about Rondo to write an article on Rondo
    • Asked anyone interested in writing about Hmong and Dakota in Minnesota to reach out
  • We did introductions and observed
    • There were many high school and post-secondary students in attendance who signed up for Wikipedia in the last week
    • A few veteran Wikipedia users with expertise and interest in specific subjects
    • A handful of folks did not edit Wikipedia but wanted to share their perspective as readers and celebrate their appreciation for Wikipedia, or find out how to start editing again if they contributed in the past
    • Many were excited something international like Wikipedia had a connection to Minnesota
    • Topics people read and edited were across the board, including history, math, science, and arts
    • Many attendees were convinced to attend by an enthusiastic friend
    • The banner announcement on Wikipedia attracted most attendees
  • Feedback included:
    • The Rondo library was a good location for students because it is off the light rail and central to the cities
    • Food (and beer!) were draws for new folks to keep attending
    • Ideas for next steps include introduction to editing sessions, outreach to schools
  • After the talking there was a lot of mingling and discussion, emails and phone numbers were exchanged as people made connections
  • People loved the hotdish and had seconds and thirds. There was a delicious French silk pie and a number of other snack items.
  • We went over the 7:30 pm end time during the mingling portion

This will be covered in one of the local high school newspapers as well.
