Breakthrough and Centre for Internet and society's A2K program in collaboration with Hidden pockets invite you to a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon to create articles on legal cases around women's issues in India. This event aims at creating new articles and expanding the existing stubs. We also want to encourage women to contribute to Wikipedia and increase the quality of articles related to women-related issues.

The Meetup is open to anyone interested (editor, reader, or any one curious about it) in Wikipedia of any language is welcome. All are welcome, and we are especially interested in seeing newcomers to join the experienced Wikipedians/Wikimedians. If you are interested in coming, please add your name below.

Agenda

10 A.M to 12 PM: Discussion of the cases that have been selected. Reflecting upon the pre-work done by participants and creating a central repository for citations and references (links, pdf and newspaper articles on a google doc shared with the participants).

12PM to 1:30PM: Wikipedia Orientation by Rahim and Rohini. Discussion of similar projects, contextual similarities and differences. Arriving at a narrative and style consensus. Registration (if any of the participants have missed out on registration).

2:00PM to 4:30 PM: Editing of articles

  1. Right to livelihood, which was the central issue in the Olga Tellis case on rights of pavement dwellers, litigation pursued by hawkers in Mumbai and SEWA in Ahmedabad (1980s)
  2. Women’s equality rights under religious laws –cases where women from different religious communities—Shahnaz Sheikh/Saroo, Mary Roy, Gita Hariharan--challenged discriminatory religious family laws (1980-1990)
  3. Judicial accountability – proceedings in the V Ramaswamy exposure case, which was the first and only time in independent India, when impeachment proceedings were initiated against the a judge of the Supreme Court (Early 1990s)
  4. Right to compensation – the Charanlal Sahu case, where the LC challenged the enactment that gave powers to the State to negotiate compensation claims on behalf of victims in the Bhopal gas leakage case, despite the State being vicariously liable and hence party to the dispute. Later it followed up victims’ compensation claims in the Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Udyog Sangathan v Union of India—proceedings to ensure that compensation amounts actually reached the victims. (Late 80s)
  5. Right to environment- the Ramada Hotel case where it represented the Goa Foundation to protect coastal areas, and a number cases representing environmental activist and scholar Vandana Siva seeking orders to effectively implement laws protecting the environment and particularly on the issue of hazardous waste (1990s)
  6. Women’s right to dignity and a violence free life- the Rupan Deol Bajaj case– the first case on sexual harassment, the Phoolan Devi Arundhuti Roy) case to prevent the release of the film ‘Bandit Queen’, in which she disputed the accuracy of her portrayal; and the considerable number of cases where LC represented survivors of domestic violence, rape and sexual harassment.
  7. State accountability in cases of mass human rights violations- proceedings to enforce State accountability in the cases of enforced disappearances in Punjab, challenge to the Armed Forces Special Powers Act in Naga People’s Movement for Human Rights, civil court proceedings seeking compensation for victims of the Gujarat 2002 genocide. (1990s)
  8. Rights of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA)- beginning with the infamous Dominic DSouza case, LC’s engagement in representing PLWHA have lead to landmark judgments upholding PLWHA’s rights to privacy, right to marry and rights against discriminatory treatment (1990-2000s)
  9. Right to sexual expression- LC’s representation in the Naz Foundation case, which resulted in the Delhi High Court deeming Section 377 to be violative of Articles 14, 15 and 21 of the Constitution in so far as it criminalized adult

private consensual sexual acts. And the ________ case upholding rights of transgendered communities. (2000-2010s)

  1. Right to affordable medicines and treatment – the Novartis case, in which LC represented cancer patients to oppose illegal patents on essential drugs.
