[edit]Potential COI
[edit]Hi,
I noticed the user J4snc2022 [1] was making edits (http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Special:Contributions/J4snc2022) to the Jen Banwart portion of the Republican Party candidates subsection on the 2022 United States Senate election in North Carolina article. Given the username, could it be a Conflict of interest?
Thanks, David O. Johnson (talk) 02:33, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- @David O. Johnson: Indeed, it also implies a shared account in my opinion. Added a note to the user's talk page. RudolfRed (talk) 03:05, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
Punctuation for quotes
[edit]Hello! Did I make a correct change here? This the second time I've seen that instead of quote marks. Thank you. :) Abillionradios (talk) 05:41, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you, Abillionradios for making that improvement. Guillemets, « », are generally used as quotation marks in French text, but not in English. Maproom (talk) 07:26, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- Awesome, thank you, Maproom. :) Abillionradios (talk) 07:29, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
Biog on myself
[edit]I would like to include myself on Wikipedia. How do l post a biog and other information?
Regards Gary Turner Radio Announcer Journalist
- Hello, Gary. Autobiographies are highly discouraged, and the vast majority of people why try to write one are unsuccessful. Wikipedia is a neutral encyclopedia, not a platform for self-promotion. Read about Conflict of interest editing, and read Your first article. If you decide to try it (which I do not recommend), then use the Articles for creation process. Oh, blogs are not considered reliable sources on Wikipedia, unless written by widely acknowledged experts. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 07:00, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
Editing direct quotations to use current pronouns
[edit]Hi! Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this, but I tried editing a quote on this page to use Demi Lovato's current pronouns (in brackets), but it was quickly reverted with the reason "Don't modify a direct quote". I'm confused because I can't find anything saying you shouldn't edit direct quotations to use the current pronouns of the person mentioned, and I've seen it done on many pages before (such as this one). I figured I should double check here to make sure. Thank you and sorry again if this isn't the right place to ask this! 2600:1700:9540:1E30:205B:4AE2:1D52:7759 (talk) 07:03, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- "Quotations must be verifiably attributed, and the wording of the quoted text should be faithfully reproduced. This is referred to as the principle of minimal change. Where there is good reason to change the wording, bracket the changed text; for example, "Ocyrhoe told him his fate" might be quoted as "Ocyrhoe told [her father] his fate"." What is "good reason" is a matter of context and consensus (per talkpage discussion), my own knee-jerk reaction is "don't mess with the quote." Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:32, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- In this case, where there has been a deliberate change on Demi's part, I would still say that the original wording of the quote should stand, but there may be reason to make clear that the quote preceded the change and is not a deliberate non-compliance. Non-compliant post-change quotes should probably be avoided out of courtesy, unless their very non-compliance is the significant issue; they should still not be altered.--Verbarson (talk) 10:59, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
MOS:GENDERID says "Paraphrase, elide, or use square brackets to replace portions of quotations to avoid deadnaming or misgendering, except in rare cases where exact wording cannot be avoided, as where there is a pun on the notable former name, etc." - X201 (talk) 12:04, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- A bit of MOS against MOS, then. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:36, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
Not for advertising or promotion purposes.
[edit]Hi,
My article for Alexia Inge keeps being deleted due to it being classed as "advertising or for promotional purposes".
As the article is not written for this purpose I am confused as to how it keeps being flagged as this.
I have put the article below in order to see what parts would need to be changed in order for it to be published.
Many thanks,
Lucy

- Well, how about " is renowned for its curated, results-driven ethos" — marketing-speak that real people, never mind an encyclopaedia, would never use. Also, at least in the version here, there are zero sources, so no-one can verify that someone, somewhere, did once use these words to describe the company. My wikipedia page is not visible in google after searching my name
[edit]Dear Team, Its been more than 40 days I created my Wikipedia page and my page is not visible in google after searching my name. I want to know if my page is accepted by wikipedia or not. Also I want to know what actions required to make my page visible in google. Please Guide me.
Thank You— Preceding unsigned comment added by Spub305 (talk • contribs)
- Spub305 You edited your user page, which is not article space and not searchable by search engines. Your user page is a place for you to tell about yourself as a Wikipedia editor or user. New users cannot directly create articles, and must use Articles for Creation. However, you should be aware that autobiographical articles are strongly discouraged per the autobiography policy. Wikipedia is not interested in what people want to say about themselves, but in what independent reliable sources with significant coverage choose on their own to say about them. Wikipedia is also not interested in helping your fans or enhancing search results for you. Wikipedia articles summarize what independent reliable sources say, showing how a person meets Wikipedia's special definition of a notable actor or actress. I have deleted your user page as promotional. 331dot (talk) 10:30, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- Also be aware that a Wikipedia article is not necessarily desirable. There are good reasons to not want one. You cannot lock it to the text that you might prefer, or prevent others from editing it. Any information about you, good and bad, can appear in an article about you as long as it is found in an independent reliable source and is not defamatory. 331dot (talk) 10:31, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
How to create an organization page?
[edit]Hi Wiki Team,
I would like to know the process to create a new page for a company. Thank you.
--Tvairsystems (talk) 11:46, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- Please read Help:Your first article. Is the company perhaps named TV Air Systems, or similar? If so, please read Wikipedia:Conflict of interest and Wikipedia:An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing. Either way, please also read Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies). -- Hoary (talk) 11:59, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- Tvairsystems Successfully creating a new article(not a mere "page") is the hardest thing to do on Wikipedia- and it's more difficult when one has a conflict of interest as you do. Wikipedia is not a place for companies to tell the world about themselves, it summarizes what others completely unaffiliated with the subject choose on their own to say about it(no press releases, announcements of routine transactions such as the commencement of operations) Please also see the important information I placed on your user talk page regarding your username. 331dot (talk) 12:01, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- Sorry to make this seem like a pile-on, but, your username is not allowable, you may be blocked because of it. See WP:CORPNAME. The same page also has info on how to change it. - X201 (talk) 13:11, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

See the traffic to my business Wikipedia page
[edit]Hey there, My name is Or and I'm working at the monday.com Brand Awareness team.
I wanted to know if we can see the monthly traffic to our Wikipedia page. Link - Monday.com
Thanks a lot, Or Or Hadar (talk) 14:55, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Or Hadar: Click the "View history" tab, "Pageviews", "Date type" and "Monthly" to see [2]. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:01, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Or Hadar: Please see your user talk page for important information about paid editing. I would note that it is not "your Wikipedia page", but a Wikipedia article about your website. You have no special rights to it as a representative of the subject, see WP:OWN; you actually have less due to your conflict of interest, although your input is welcome. 331dot (talk) 15:49, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- Traffic to your company's Wikipedia page should be utterly irrelevant. You shouldn't be using Wikipedia to advertise, and we use nofollow specifically to prevent SEO from following external links. —A little blue Bori v^_^v Jéské Couriano 21:06, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- Monday.com saw a sharp rise in views starting on 17th of this month. I guess that Or knows what caused the rise, and was interested in how big an effect it had on readership of the Wikipedia article. I see nothing improper in this. Maproom (talk) 22:07, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

Help Request
[edit]Draft:Padma Rao Sundarji - I am unable to figure out what sources I could add for Early Life and Personal Life as both these sections only talk about the family or education? Also I appreciate any feedback on the other areas of this draft that needs further editing that will help in the page going to the live section. Requesting help and expert advise please! Thanks in advance! :) ShravanthiRK (talk) 15:46, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- ShravanthiRK what source did you get the information from? How do you know the information you put in those sections? If it's from knowing her personally, or talking to her, or something like that, and you can't find it previously published anywhere else, it doesn't belong in the article. But if it is published somewhere, cite that place as a source, at least for now. If the source is unacceptable per WP:RS and WP:ABOUTSELF, it can be dealt with later. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 15:54, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you so much for your response, ONUnicorn. This information was provided to me by the person herself who requested for this wiki contribution. I will try to find if this information is published anywhere or will alter the draft accordingly. Thank you once again, I really appreciate your message which was simple and easy to understand :)
Entry changes for Fritz Glatz, Austrian Race car driver
[edit]Fritz Glatz (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
I am the personal friend and long-term mechanic of Fritz Glatz, see Wikipedia: the entries in the english section are wrong - and everytime I correct them a „Bbbb23“ reverts them back and threatens with „vandalism“. He has no clue: e.g. Fritz Glatz racing career started in 1965 in England, continued in 1966 for Kaimann Racing Vienna in Formula Vee and came to a stop in August 1966 after a severe accident at the Nurburgring. All can be read in his biografie in German. He restarted the careed at age 39 in F3 and later F2/ F3000 in 1980+, but cars and and entries are sometimes wrong and sources can be checked on Wikipedia; eg. his participation of 4 races in F3000 in 1985, not 2, as written (see Curacao F3000 Race on Oct. 13th, 1985. This writer Bbbb23 seems ignorant and wants to keep these false information in Wikipedia, and every time I correct it he changes it back - and has no clues and probably never met Fritz Glatz. Why make Wikipedia in the first place - if wrong entries are promoted?— Preceding unsigned comment added by Plasonig (talk • contribs)
- Plasonig The article in question does appear to be largely unsourced, and has been marked as such. Thank you for bringing this to attention. However, we cannot just accept your word for changes- information needs to be sourced to an independent reliable source for verification purposes. If you would be able to help with that, please post on the article talk page. 331dot (talk) 16:14, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- Courtesy ping Bbb23 Eagleash (talk) 16:20, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- I have just replied to this at the Teahouse. Please don't post the same question in more than one place, Plasonig: it just duplicates effort, wastes editors' time. --ColinFine (talk) 17:05, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
Archiving talk page spam filter problem
[edit]Trying to archive some old talk page threads, I get "Error: The text you wanted to publish was blocked by the spam filter. This is probably caused by a link to a forbidden external site. The following text is what triggered our spam filter: s155239215.onlinehome.us" - so how do I archive it? Obviously I don't want to mis-represent what was said. Thanks, DuncanHill (talk) 17:53, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- It's traditional, and I believe acceptable, to split the link with a space before attempting the archive, ie change http://s155... to http:// s155... Also, in case you didn't know, your log is here. -- zzuuzz (talk) 17:57, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Zzuuzz: Thank you, and I never knew I had a log. DuncanHill (talk) 17:59, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
Sister Project Boxes and MOS Conflict
[edit]Hi! The MOS Seems to contradict in an area and I could use some clarification.
MOS:SO states that Internal links to related English Wikipedia articles, with section heading "See also"; link templates for sister-project content also usually go at the top of this section when it is present (otherwise in the last section on the page).
This is in apparent contradiction to MOS:ELLAYOUT, which states that Links to Wikimedia sister projects and Spoken Wikipedia should generally appear in "External links", not under "See also". If the article has no "External links" section, then place sister links at the top of the last section in the article. Two exceptions: Wiktionary and Wikisource links may be linked inline (e.g. to an unusual word or the text of a document being discussed).
So, which is it? Should I put sister project boxes in External links or See also? Thanks, Tyrone Madera (talk) 18:54, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- Tyrone Madera, I have checked the history of the passages you quote, now highlighted in green, and the more recent is MOS:SO, which was updated in the Revision to Wikipedia:Manual of Style as of 10:06, 23 November 2020 by SMcCandlish. SMcCandlish please could you resolve the inconsistency between MOS:SO and MOS:ELLAYOUT? TSventon (talk) 23:53, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- Tyrone Madera, this should be archived shortly and SMcCandlish hasn't responded yet, so I have copied the section to their talk page. TSventon (talk) 23:03, 27 May 2021 (UTC)
- TSventon, Okay. Where should I go to next beyond this one user? Tyrone Madera (talk) 23:37, 27 May 2021 (UTC)
- Tyrone Madera, you could ask at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style. SMcCandlish seems to be editing one a week at the moment and haven't edited since I pinged them. TSventon (talk) 23:46, 27 May 2021 (UTC)
- TSventon, Okay, I'll go there and if that doesn't work out I'll come back here again. Are you okay with pinging me when SMcCandlish responds? Tyrone Madera (talk) 23:48, 27 May 2021 (UTC)

pages that are protected from creation
[edit]Dear Editors
The Wikipedia article on the Inverse Warburg Effect was deleted after some controversy. After that, the message was: "This page is protected from creation, so only administrators can create it."
Is this still valid? If so, how can an administrator be contacted and provided with material to create a new article on this topic, incorporating recent research in several areas.
Best regards Hasperasperagus — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hasperasperagus (talk • contribs)
- Hasperasperagus Inverse Warburg effect is a redirect that leads to a section of Warburg effect (oncology). You seem to be referring to Inverse Warburg Effect. I would suggest you expand that existing section of article first. 331dot (talk) 19:21, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- But the answer to your question in general, Hasperasperagus, is that if somebody uses WP:AFC and creates a draft that a reviewer accepts, then the reviewer will get it moved to mainspace despite the protection. --ColinFine (talk) 21:18, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
Yesterday I've installed Yet another Articles for creation helper script and I've bypassed my cache. Why doesn't WP:AFCH work well? Dr Salvus 19:19, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

How do I cite a Plaque (such as one in front of a monument)?
[edit]How do I properly cite a dedicated plaque? Do plaques count under verifiability policy? Thanks, Tyrone Madera (talk) 19:45, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- Tyrone Madera Now that's a good question. There is no WP:PLAQUE. I know there are articles that mentions for example Blue plaques, sometimes with an image, though I don't think they generally cite them per se. It may depend on which plaque and for what.
- One can argue that a plaque is "published". And perhaps, but not necessarily, put there by some sort of WP:RS/authority on the subject. I guess you could try to put plain text between ref tags,[1] perhaps with a link to an image if there is one. If someone objects, deal with it then. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 20:59, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

- For the interested, this is the text in question: The city hall itself is home to a seal of the city of Springfield, created out of trash from the city's sewers.[27] The seal and its creator were featured on a popular television show after its creation.[27]

- Tyrone Madera By convention, we generally accept a picture as a reliable source for its subject. As User:Gråbergs Gråa Sång said the statements on the plaque were "published" when the plaque was placed in a public place. Take a picture of the plaque and put it on Commons (if old enough to be out of copyright) or on the English WP (if not). Use a link to the picture as if it were a URL as part of your reference. -Arch dude (talk) 22:30, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- Arch dude, I visited it again, and I've come to the conclusion that it is definitely in copyright. The sign (better descriptor) is three paragraphs in length and was created within the last 50 years at most. I took a photo, but I'm not sure how I would go about arguing fair use when posting a local image of it. What justification would it fall under? Best, Tyrone Madera (talk) 20:41, 25 May 2021 (UTC)
- Tyrone Madera I may completely misjudge the situation, but I'd have thought that a photo of a sign taken in a public place would be fine to upload on Commons. Then you could "cite web" with the Commons url as parameter. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 15:12, 26 May 2021 (UTC)

- Huh. A quick scan of COM:FOP US leads me to conclude that unless the sign actually says "This sign is released under the the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license", don't bother. Unless there is some local version of "As a work of the U.S. federal government, the image or file is in the public domain in the United States." that applies. Copyright is a challenge, to put it in civil language. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 16:13, 26 May 2021 (UTC)
- Gråbergs Gråa Sång, Wouldn't a 3 paragraph sign fall under creative works? The municipality of Springfield, Oregon is the author. Tyrone Madera (talk) 03:49, 27 May 2021 (UTC)

Article about myself
[edit]Hello,
My name is Kevyn Knox, and I was curious about getting an article about myself onto Wikipedia.
Here are my accomplishments (so far)
Published Author of a book called "Forgotten TV: 101 TV Shows You've Probably Never Heard Of"
Owner / Founder of A to Zooey Productions, with a small press branch (Experimental Forest Press) & a comic book branch (Brain Tumor Comix)
The creator of the online comic strip, "La-La & Lu-Lu"
I am also a visual artist, Photographer, and I ran for Mayor of Harrisburg Pa in 2021 (Alas, I lost in the primary)
I am publicly known as The Andy Warhol of Harrisburg
I know I am not supposed to write articles about myself, but was hoping there are editors there than can do it.
Thanx, Kevyn Knox
Kevynknox (talk) 20:54, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- Kevynknox You can make a request at Requested Articles, but there is an extremely large backlog there and few people to write articles, so your request may never be acted on, if at all. You may not be aware that a Wikipedia article about yourself is not necessarily a good thing. There are good reasons to not want one. You can't lock it to the text you might prefer, or prevent others from editing it. Any information about you, good or bad, can be in an article about you as long as it appears in an independent source and is not defamatory. Vandals can vandalize an article about you to say something grossly incorrect and while that is usually detected and removed(but can also be subtle enough to remain for awhile), it could still damage you personally.
- Your best bet if you still desire an article is to allow independent editors to take note of your career in independent reliable sources and choose to write about you. Forcing the issue can work, but is usually seen as promotional and viewed skeptically. Wikipedia summarizes what independent reliable sources with significant coverage state about persons that meet Wikipedia's special definition of notability, not what people want to say about themselves. It's not enough to merely have accomplishments(even if impressive as yours are), others completely unaffiliated with you must write about you with in depth coverage beyone merely telling about those accomplishments. 331dot (talk) 21:03, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- (edit conflict)See WP:BASIC. What are the 3-4 best sources you know that are at the same time reliably published (no blogs, wikis etc etc), independent of you (and your company, publisher, projects etc) and about you in some detail? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 21:09, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
Lithuania
[edit]This statement is wrong, "to the southeast of Sweden", Lithuania is to the southwest of Sweden. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 107.77.223.64 (talk) 23:18, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

- Indulge me, please, if I let this drift a bit far afield. But this put me in mind of a flight I once took from Europe to the US. The pilot came on the PA and advised us to look out the window, where we would see "the Isle of Man, in the English Channel." PROBLEM! The Isle of Man is NOT in the English Channel. At least this user so confused about Sweden and Lithuania--or about compass directions around the Baltic Sea--is not likely to be piloting passenger jets around there. Tags and warnings for whitewashing of article content?
[edit]Could someone tell me the best way to inform editors who are whaitwashing a topic, for lack of a better word? Example. Someone reverted that, and I left a DS alert, but what does one do if it continues? Thanks--- Possibly (talk) 23:32, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- Well, you could start with Wikipedia:Template index/User talk namespace/Multi-level templates#Disruptive editing warnings, then escalate to Wikipedia:Requests for page protection and then to Wikipedia:Blocking policy. Clarityfiend (talk) 23:46, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Clarityfiend: thanks so much. --- Possibly (talk) 23:51, 24 May 2021 (UTC)
