Department of Anatomy

Dr Mike Dickison (User:Giantflightlessbirds, contact: mike@rove.wiki) worked as as a Wikipedian in Residence from January to August 2024 with the Ageing Well National Science Challenge office in the University of Otago's Department of Anatomy to upload images to Commons, improve Wikidata on researchers and publications, cite published research to improve relevant Wikipedia articles, and create new articles as needed.

Goals

[edit]
  1. A Wikipedia article about Ageing Well, summarising the origins and main investigators in the Science Challenge, the research themes and projects, and a selected publications list and outcomes, linking back to the (archived) website.
  2. For each researcher, most significant research publications in Wikidata, linked to them as the authors, with a Scholia publications list and graphs.
  3. A WikiCommons category for each researcher where possible, using images supplied by Ageing Well, with a profile photo assigned to their Wikidata item.
  4. Citing the key published papers from each Ageing Well project area in relevant Wikipedia articles and linking back to the AWNSC Wikipedia article.
  5. Create articles about selected researchers, using photos cleared by the Ageing Well comms team and uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.
  6. Checking the MBIE Ageing Well site is backed up in the Internet Archive, and is scraped again when complete. DONE. (The site has been archived 180 times between 2015 and 2024, and will continue to be scraped at least monthly.)

Open Publication and Research Impact: increasing the reach of your findings outside academia
A free drop-in Zoom webinar for Ageing Well, Healthier Lives, and University of Otago research support/library staff
How do researchers increase the reach and impact of their findings, especially outside of traditional academic channels? The debate is currently focussed on open access vs paywalled publication, and how to deal with the media. But other tools exist. This presentation covered practical tips for open publication, Creative Commons licensing and copyright policies, retaining your photo copyrights when publishing, ORCID settings, image and figure distribution through Wikimedia Commons, and leveraging Wikipedia and its volunteer editors for readership. (Note: Wikidata generally uses the full name as given in author lists on publications; Wikipedia will use the most-commonly-referred-by name—for example, the one in a university staff listing. The Scholia link shows the number of publications currently in Wikidata and properly linked to that person's Wikidata ID.)
