Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute to the encyclopedia, but when you add or change content (particularly if you change facts and figures), as you have to the article Randolph Bresnik, please cite a reliable source for the content of your edit. This helps maintain our policy of verifiability. Take a look at Wikipedia:Citing sources for information about how to cite sources and the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you. -MBK004 01:20, 15 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have nominated List of couples with British titles in their own right, an article that you created, for deletion. I do not think that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of couples with British titles in their own right. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time.

Please contact me if you're unsure why you received this message.  Sandstein  17:12, 1 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you recently tried to give a page a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into another page with a different name. This is known as a "cut and paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is needed for attribution and various other purposes. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page. This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen. Thank you. Gregory H. Johnson

[edit]

Hi ViennaUK, I have reverted your edit to Gregory H. Johnson. I did so because you deleted a proper category. Greg Johnson is British, this is verifiable by checking his NASA bio, which is linked at the end of the article.--NavyBlue84 23:58, 8 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Just because he was born in South Ruislip, Middlesex, United Kingdom, doesn't make him British. To qualify, he would have to fit one of the following two categories:
  1. lex soli: By birth in the United Kingdom to a parent who is a British citizen at the time of the birth, or to a parent who is settled in the United Kingdom
  2. lex sanguinis: By descent if one of the parents is a British citizen otherwise than by descent (for example by birth, adoption, registration or naturalisation in the United Kingdom).
Neither is asserted in the NASA bio. He could have been born to tourists or expats temporarily residing in the UK. More info at British nationality law. Toddst1 (talk) 23:30, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I just wanted to point out that the question you asked about the coat of arms of TR has engendered a spirited discussion. Beyond My Ken (talk) 05:44, 2 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oh my! Seems like I stirred up a real hornets' nest here. I agree wholly and totally with what another user has written in the discussion, being "We are an encyclopedia for the general public, not only for those knowledgable about heraldry. If John Q Sixpack looks at an picture which he's told is the coat of arms of Theodore Roosevelt, how is he supposed to know that only the helmet and the roses and the motto and so on are actually the coat of arms? He sees the American flag, and the other embellishments, and he goes away with the firm idea that Theodore Roosevelt's coat of arms has the American flag in it [...] we have misrepresented a piece of information to him by including elements that are not actually part of the coat of arms [but] we have an obligation to our readers to provide an accurate representation of the blazon [...] Isn't our purpose to provide accurate information?" and that, I think, is also a good summary of Wikipedia's principles. What ever we do, we must not allow that the less informed might be led astray. Thank you. ViennaUK (talk) 20:54, 9 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fascinating bit of info you have added there. Do you have a source for it? Toddst1 (talk) 23:24, 19 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It's from "A Complete Guide to Heraldry" by Arthur Charles Fox-Davies (published 1909), pages 113, 474, 593, 374. The book is also online and the passage on page 593 can be found here: http://www.archive.org/stream/completeguidetoh00foxdrich#page/592/mode/2up I hope this helps. Royal Burial Ground, Frogmore Assessment Request

I have reviewed the assessment request you submitted to WikiProject Biography for the Royal Burial Ground, Frogmore article, and determined that the article is not within the scope of WikiProject Biography. [edit]

Hi - Please can you not stop adding unsourced material to assessed articles. It is very dispiriting when some of us have worked very hard to get them past assessment. Thanks in anticipation. Dormskirk (talk) 21:54, 9 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I cannot see why the information added to the above article is unsourced. I spent a long time writing about Kilmun as burial place of the Dukes of Argyll, and all information there comes with references. What I included in the above article was, as far as I remember, just links. ViennaUK (talk) 21:58, 9 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You added "which he had extended" at the end of the article without a source. Sorry to be a pain but this was very obvious and I have had three articles downgraded that I have worked on (over several years) as a result of such trivial additions. Thanks. Speedy deletion nomination of Mines in the Battle of Messines (1917)

[edit]

Hello ViennaUK,

I wanted to let you know that I just tagged Mines in the Battle of Messines (1917) for deletion, because it doesn't appear to contain any encyclopedic content. Take a look at our suggestions for essential content in short articles to learn what should be included.

If you feel that the article shouldn't be deleted and want more time to work on it, you can contest this deletion, but please don't remove the speedy deletion tag from the top.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Esquivalience t 18:40, 18 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your recent contributions, such as Mines in the Battle of Messines (1917). Getting started creating new articles on Wikipedia can be tricky, and you might like to try creating a draft version first, which you can then ask for feedback on if necessary, with less risk of deletion. Do make sure you also read help available to you, including Your First Article and the Tutorial. You might also like to try the Article Wizard, which has an option to create a draft version. Hohenzollern redoubt 1916 wasn't a battle.

[edit]

It should stay Hohenzollern Redoubt (1916)Keith-264 (talk) 21:10, 28 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

What about "Action of Hohenzollern Redoubt (1916)"? I think it would be good to have some "battle word" in the title, although I'm not fussy which one. Maybe "attack" in analogy to Hulluch and Wulverghem? "Assault" maybe? Any ideas? ViennaUK (talk) 21:12, 28 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It's not for us to apply a technical label since that is OR not NPOV and the October 1915 gig is called an action in James, E. A. (1924). A Record of the Battles and Engagements of the British Armies in France and Flanders 1914–1918 (London Stamp Exchange 1990 ed.). Aldershot: Gale & Polden. ISBN 0-948130-18-0. James based his book on The Official Names of the Battles and Other Engagements Fought by the Military Forces of the British Empire during the Great War, 1914-1919 and the Third Afghan War, 1919: Report of the Battles Nomenclature Committee as approved by the Army Council’, London, War Office, 1922. Keith-264 (talk) 05:59, 29 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, that seems to be a can of worms here! My take on things would be to (1) rename the 1915 article Action of Hohenzollern Redoubt (1915) and include a paragraph discussing that there are different labels attached to it in literature, (2) rename the 1916 article Attacks on the Hohenzollern Redoubt 1916 and describe that the article is about a group of attacks in March. What do you think? Thank you for including the full title of the James book. ViennaUK (talk) 06:17, 29 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Keith-264 (talk) 07:01, 29 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Damned if you do, damned if you don't ;O) Attacks is also a technical term (see Other engagements) There are Affairs, Attacks, Actions and Battles in the Nomeclature Committee Report. Of course if we follow the British usage we can be criticised for Anglocentric bias, unless there's a source for French and German terms, hence the alternative foreign titles in some leads.... I had a look at the talk page of Loos 1915 last night and realised that there had been a conversation about the articles late last year, which you might find helpful. RegardsKeith-264 (talk) 07:00, 29 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
This is the box with titles taken from OH 1916 I where there aren't any in James (p. 9). I'm still stuck with a new job which is taking up far too much time and frustrating my attempts to complete lots of unfinished Wikiwork. Bugger!Keith-264 (talk) 07:07, 29 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Tunneling companies UK

[edit]

You and another user started making articles on the British tunneling companies. I'm assessing the backlog and realized that many of them were not as notable as others. Wondering if we could compile all of them in a list, and have separate articles on the companies where there is info to use. most of the articles had the same text with a few minor changes. I think a nice chart would suffice for those, and a list would be more useful that an entire slew of start-class articles, with a B article periodically. What do you think? Roger thought it would be good. I couldn't tell how wrapped up you were in Ozone's issues. He's not around to contribute though, so it would be you and me (and mostly you).  :) Cheers, auntieruth (talk) 19:41, 18 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, thanks for your comment. I've got a lot of information on the Tunnelling Companies which I hope to put online at some time, alas I'm too busy at the moment. The beauty of having an individual article per Tunnelling Company is that it is relatively easy to add additional information to individual unit histories as such info becomes available. Who are Roger and Ozone? ViennaUK (talk) 15:32, 22 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ozone had worked on a couple of them, and Roger is one of the emeriti coordinators at the Milhistory project. I've no problem with what you are proposing but I was thinking that it should be a list, and then full articles as info became available. auntieruth (talk) 19:26, 29 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Also, instead of leaving the assessment blank, perhaps you'd like to enter them into the article writing contest? If you list them here: http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Military_history/Assessment#Requests_for_assessment someone will assess them and then you can enter them here: http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Military_history/Contest#General_contest Even if you're not into contests, this also helps us keep track of new articles... auntieruth (talk) 16:18, 2 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The Routledge Atlas of the First World War Gilbert, M. Routledge, 1970 & 1994 0-415-11933-2 p. 51 has a rather good diagrammatic map of the tunnelling areas on the British Western Front 1915–1916. Keith-264 (talk) 19:08, 18 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I have turned the article you created into a redirect. Hagley Park refers to the dear park. The Hall, stables, church and cricket ground are not in the park. The estate is usually referred to as Hagley Hall (as are most estates eg Blenheim Palace). Also there was a copyright violation as you did not attribute the text you copied from the Hagley Hall article (See WP:Copying within Wikipedia on how to attribute such copies in future). If you look at the Hagley Hall article. If you wish to discuss this further I suggest that we do it on Talk:Hagley Hall. -- PBS (talk) 22:35, 18 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Trewan Hall

[edit]

Information icon Hi, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you tried to give Trewan Hall a different title by copying its content and pasting either the same content, or an edited version of it, into Vivian family (of Trewan Hall). This is known as a "cut-and-paste move", and it is undesirable because it splits the page history, which is legally required for attribution. Instead, the software used by Wikipedia has a feature that allows pages to be moved to a new title together with their edit history.

In most cases, once your account is four days old and has ten edits, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page (the tab may be hidden in a dropdown menu for you). This both preserves the page history intact and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. If you cannot perform a particular page move yourself this way (e.g. because a page already exists at the target title), please follow the instructions at requested moves to have it moved by someone else. Also, if there are any other pages that you moved by copying and pasting, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Requests for history merge. Thank you. Talskiddy (talk) 09:24, 11 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thank you for your notice. I'm totally unfamiliar with the technical side of also keeping a page's edit history. In case of Trewan Hall and the Vivians, I split the articles because there was awesome detail about a very important family, except that the article said little about the building itself. So it seemed sensible. That doing so removed you from the edit history is something I neither intended nor would want to do. Please accept my apologies. Can you help with the requested moves, please? Kind regards, ViennaUK (talk) 20:08, 25 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of William Henry Lyttelton (1820–1884)

[edit]

The article William Henry Lyttelton (1820–1884) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

He was the son of a peer and a minor church figure (canon). Neither establishes notability and there is no mention of works or achievements doing so.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Mines on the Italian Front (World War I), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Crag. Thanks for the WWI tunnel warfare articles

[edit]

Many thanks for the splendid articles on mines in World War I: Mines on the first day of the Somme, Mines in the Battle of Messines (1917), and Mines on the Italian Front (World War I). I noticed the latter when it was added to this automated search which I had set up recently (hoping to find and encourage areas of WWI editing). Can I ask if there are plans for an overview article on tunnel warfare in World War I, that would fit at the head of Category:Tunnel warfare in World War I? Maybe Tunnel warfare#World War I is enough? I was also looking at World War I to see if mining or these tunnel mines are mentioned and couldn't find anything. With WWI being such a vast topic area, I suspect people have to go to individual areas to find links to the articles. But would like to see more links leading people to these articles (it is difficult to tell which incoming links are from templates or from running text within an article). Also, should tunnel mine redirect to tunnel warfare? Carcharoth (talk) 08:15, 12 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to be so severe with your edits on Poasschendaele and Tactical Development but you seem to have got the wrong end of several sticks re: Wynne. You managed to wikilink names already linked too. do you have a User:Keith-264/common.js ? If you do and have importScript('User:Ucucha/duplinks.js'); you can scan a page for duplicate wikilinks. Thanks for leaving a note. I've realized where I got my counting wrong, it was by misinterpreting the role of the main battle zone (Grosskampffeld). Thanks for correcting my wobbly writing. ViennaUK (talk) 18:24, 10 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
At least you read the bugger! Since you've been going through the 3rd Ypres pages, I think I should mention that there's a WP somewhere about not putting pics, maps etc on both sides of the text, hence some of my edits of your edits. I prefer such items on the right margin only but other people disagree and there's some layout convention, about the subject of the photo pointing towards the text. If squaddies are moving left to right, the pic should be on the left (which means I'd rather not use the pic at all).... The definite article the seems to me to be misplaced with Flandern I Stellung et al. because it's a title but again that seems more like my aesthetic preference than a WP. We write the prose we write and for ages I've been trying to be as laconic as possible. I think I'm getting the hang of it, because I tend to draft sentences in my head now rather than write them and revise them every time I look at the article. The Wikiedit I save has as few adjectives and pronouns as possible but I still find that I commit solecisms like serpentine sentences and wayward commas. Moved your work to a new article space that has the details of the Great War operations under Local operations December 1915 – June 1916 and added material from the OH, more to come. Returned Sint Elooi to a location article OK? Regards Keith-264 (talk) 12:31, 18 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I should have mentioned that the gig has The in the title, apols for the confusion. Hooge

[edit]

The OH has it separate from Mount Sorrel so I was thinking about a page and stumbled on Hooge in World War I so I've added a bit of narrative. Weren't you thinking about a comprehensive article on the Ypres Salient a while back? I see that there is the beginning of an article already.Keith-264 (talk) 12:50, 23 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't realise how much material there was on Hooge in the OH and divisional histories. I think that it would be better to combine the events and mining sections to avoid duplication. Any thoughts? Regards Keith-264 (talk) 11:02, 24 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Good question... When I started Hooge in World War I, I did it mainly to avoid filling Hooge, Ypres with too much detail on World War I and to allow it to exist as a location article. If you think that the underground sections of Hooge in World War I should be combined with the other events there, I have no objection as long as no detail gets lost in the process. Best wishes ViennaUK (talk) 10:44, 27 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@ comprehensive article on the Ypres Salient: Yes it would be handy to have such an article, but I'm not sure if it is a priority. Taking into account all the detail that's available (just look at List of World War I memorials and cemeteries in Flanders, and that's nowhere near to being complete) I'm reluctant to embark on such a massive enterprise myself at this stage. ViennaUK (talk) 10:50, 27 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I know that feelin'. Since we've got so many articles now, I had in mind a hub article linking the articles with a summary, rather than anything elaborate but then again, just about every brief article I start balloons....;O)) I'll have to check on what material I've got on the reasoning for having the salient at all, because that would be the most important section. Morris barons moved to draftspace

[edit]

An article you recently created, Morris barons, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more in-depth coverage about the subject itself, with citations from reliable, independent sources in order to show it meets WP:GNG. It should have at least three, to be safe. And please remember that interviews, as primary sources, do not count towards GNG.(?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page.Onel5969 TT me 11:32, 18 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
