The article Assaf Kidron has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, this biography of a living person will be deleted after seven days unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.
If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp/dated}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within seven days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. WWGB (talk) 11:37, 21 May 2017 (UTC)

About Maya Isacowitz
[edit]Hi Uziel, and thanks for your message,
I hope it wasn't too much of a bother to you, me jumping into a new page like that.
I have a new pages feed set up, and do like tidying up new articles. I noticed that your edit summary in the initial version of the article mentioned that it was translated from the Hebrew Wikipedia. In accordance with the inter wiki licence requirements, a translation does require attribution, which I added in the article talk-page a bit later.
I also noticed that the initial version of the article didn't appear to enough reliable sources. (I think I probably have a personal opinion about what constitutes a reliable source that's more strict that the official policy. As faults go, I think that's a good fault to have.) So I added the Jerusalem Post reference. This also meant it would avoid having a {{Db-person}} "WP:A7" speedy deletion tag added to the page, as users who patrol new pages - people like me, for example - sometimes do without googling up things.
I do note that some of the references are still what might not be considered reliable sources for a biography of a living person:
- http://www.cityvineyardnyc.com is a website about a venue that would probably not pass the WP:CORPDEPTH test for a Wikipedia article
- http://yellowsubmarine.org.il, the same
- I suspect http://dugrinet.co.il/ may also be the same
- Last.fm and Bandcamp are user-generated content websites, and should almost always not be used as references.
That's the reason I added the {{BLP sources|date=November 2017}} tag to the article. I hope this explains some of my edits to the article. Please let me know if you have any questions about this. Pete AU aka --Shirt58 (talk) 10:34, 9 November 2017 (UTC)
- Shirt58, thanks for the full explanation, and also for the help editing the article.
- I have no claims about the sources reliability, just asked about the template stating the article needs additional citations, and I added citations as I could.Uziel302 (talk) 14:40, 9 November 2017 (UTC)
The article Milter (disambiguation) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Boleyn (talk) 21:16, 15 November 2017 (UTC)

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 17:09, 14 July 2018 (UTC)

- Sorry, but what are these huge files like Wikipedia:Correct typos in one click/9 for? Drmies (talk) 23:03, 7 October 2019 (UTC)
- Drmies, for correcting Wikipedia typos with them. We already worked on a couple of those lists. I just renewed the lists now. Uziel302 (talk) 23:05, 7 October 2019 (UTC)
- I guess I just don't understand why we need such a huge document to somehow explain "possbility->possibility". Drmies (talk) 00:26, 8 October 2019 (UTC)
- Drmies, it doesn't explain, with the script of the project installed like explained in main project page, clicking on an added button will fix the typo in the article itself. Uziel302 (talk) 03:45, 8 October 2019 (UTC)
- User:Andy Dingley, you're pretty smart--can you explain to me what the purpose is of these huge files like Wikipedia:Correct typos in one click/9 and all its brothers? Thanks, Drmies (talk) 15:27, 8 October 2019 (UTC)
- Thanks, but it's news to me. This type of predictive error fixing is very difficult in some languages, as the Hamming distances are so short in the spelling of many similar words. The only way to do it is by analysis of the context for the whole sentence. That can be done in two ways, either making a 'smart' parser which understands grammar (there might be a common misspelling between two words, but if one is a noun and the other a verb then picking the wrong one would often give a grammatically invalid sentence). However the more popular way to do machine language these days (Google Translate seems to be using it with success) is to have a dumber process, which takes a simpler, statistically-based approach based on much greater quantities of source text to learn from.
- Either of these need to collect a large corpus of correct spellings, and these might need to be quite long, i.e. full sentences in order to give enough context. But how that relates to these pages would be a question for Uziel302, not me. Andy Dingley (talk) 16:06, 8 October 2019 (UTC)
- Andy Dingley, I do base on edit distance (Hamming distance is only for cases of equal length). I don't use huge corpus or context analysis, I just randomly offer a word within 1 edit distance, and with long enough words it tends to be accurate on high percentage. In case it isn't accurate, the script has "type" button that pops up input field. All the edits on the project are manual so 20% false positives don't hurt much. You are welcome to visit Wikipedia:Correct typos in one click and try it. I think it's fun. Uziel302 (talk) 16:22, 8 October 2019 (UTC)

Why are there so many "correct typos in one click" pages?
[edit]There are a grand total of TWENTY "correct typos in one click" pages. I understand your motive for splitting them into separate pages (each page is laggy enough already!), but in my opinion, it wouldn't hurt to let other users know of this on each of the pages, would it? Like, please try adding one of those archive boxes onto each page? Look, I didn't know there were THAT many of them until recently. 𝕎𝕚𝕜𝕚𝕎𝕒𝕣𝕣𝕚𝕠𝕣𝟡𝟡𝟙𝟡 (talk) 11:14, 14 October 2019 (UTC)

Typos
[edit]Re this, "extoling" is not a word, extolling is, so it is not a typo. Please exercise more care in future. Thank you. DuncanHill (talk) 12:21, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
- DuncanHill, the list is created by software and is known to have many false positives. Every edit in the main namespace is done manually. Uziel302 (talk) 12:47, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
- DuncanHill, you changed it back to extollng which is obviously a typo. The reason of the issue is that SCOWL listed it on their biggest list of words. Maybe they just added ing to extol. I will use another list of words next time. Uziel302 (talk) 17:56, 27 October 2019 (UTC)
Incorrect sig in typo-fix
[edit][1] added a literal three tildes instead of your sig. DMacks (talk) 07:20, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
- DMacks, actually this was as designed, it has three tildes in the beginning too, just to mark beginning and end. We no longer add notes to talk, I changed the script to add check typo templates. I tried once to add sig in script but something in the API edit failed the translation to sig. Thanks, Uziel302 (talk) 07:30, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
- Gotcha. Thanks for the quick response! DMacks (talk) 07:34, 7 November 2019 (UTC)
Ginel, Ginell, and Ginnell
[edit]Hi Uziel302, I was looking at these three disambiguation pages and wondered if it wouldn't be better to combine them. The spellings are so similar that many readers probably wouldn't know which one they want - having them all on one page would speed up their search. Leschnei (talk) 14:19, 17 November 2019 (UTC)
- Leschnei, I never saw this practice, but if it's common, you can use it. Uziel302 (talk) 14:21, 17 November 2019 (UTC)
- The question is, which one should be the disambiguation page and which ones should be redirects? Any objection to the shortest one (Ginel) being the DAB? Leschnei (talk) 14:24, 17 November 2019 (UTC)

[edit]Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!
[edit]Hello,
Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.
I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!
From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.
If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.
Thank you!

Edits made by your tool not automatically marked as accepted pending change
[edit]Hello, while reviewing pending changes I came across this edit which was not automatically marked as accepted even though you are extended confirmed, and I had to manually accept it. It might be interesting to look into. Thanks, Darylgolden(talk) Ping when replying 14:36, 6 December 2019 (UTC)
- Darylgolden, how can I see which edit is accepted? Is it related to making the edit with user script? Is there a way to check my other edits? Uziel302 (talk) 14:52, 6 December 2019 (UTC)
- I personally see a "[accepted revision]" at the top of the diff, but that may only show for pending changes reviewers. This only happened because the page is under pending changes protection, which is a very small proportion of articles. None of your other edits are pending review. Your edit should have been automatically accepted because you are extended confirmed and the previous edit was accepted (see here), but for some strange reason it was not. I have no idea if it was caused by using the tool or not. You can maybe try editing this test page manually (and with your tool, if it is possible) to see if your edits are automatically accepted or not. Honestly, it is a very minor problem and there isn't much need to fix it; I'm just letting you know. Thanks, Darylgolden(talk) Ping when replying 05:21, 7 December 2019 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Morseburg
[edit]If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.
You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Morseburg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an orphaned disambiguation page which either
- disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
- disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
- is a redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.
Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.

Hi,
Thank you for responding so quickly (וכן אני דובר עברית גם כן). To clarify, my original article had only one reference, see here. I think my article now might qualify for entry, especially considering how many small biographies make into Wikipedia just because the figure is referenced in the 1906 Jewish Encyclopedia. I also included the fact that Rav Isaac is referred to in sources as the Gadol HaDor, something denoting his influential status. Please let me know your thoughts and thank you for your time.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Borenson requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a disambiguation page which either
- disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
- disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
- is an orphaned redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.
If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.
- AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
- The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.
Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Typo fix error
[edit]Hi Uziel. See the comments at User_talk:Blaze_Wolf#Typo_fix. There appears to be the potential for the Typo tool to identify false errors, which is common in tools, but there doesn't appear to be enough guidance to users on how to avoid or spot or report errors. When I brought the false error to the attention of User:Blaze Wolf they seemed unable to do anything about it, and even though they were the tool user who made the error, they suggested I sort it out. Could you give folks a little bit more advice on how to use the tool, and how to report false errors so that you can update the tool. Regards, SilkTork (talk) 03:16, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
- @SilkTork: Just so you know, I can't do anything about it because I don't know how to write code (and i also don't know what anything relating to the tool does). The error I made was a fault of mine since I didn't know gruit was an actual thing, however I do notice that a lot of the edits the tool suggests are false positives. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 03:20, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
- I wasn't expecting you to do anything you couldn't do User:Blaze Wolf, such as change the code, just to take the appropriate steps, such as notifying the person in charge of the tool that there is a false positive. If there are a lot of false positives with the tool, then I am sure that Uziel would like to be made aware of them so that the tool could be improved. Not everyone is able to spot a false positive, so the tool could be introducing silly errors as well as fixing silly errors if the false positives are not reported. SilkTork (talk) 03:32, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
- @SilkTork: You do make a good point. It simply seemed like you were implying I look at the code to see what's causing it. That said, it does look like there have been a lot more false positives from the tool than the last time I used it (which was about a year ago), I dunno if something changed or what. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 03:35, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
- One thing that's changed is that 100,000 typos have been fixed, so far fewer remain. As there are still the same number of false positives out there, they now form a far higher proportion of the reports. Another change is that the algorithms, which originally picked off just low-hanging fruit, have been adjusted to include more complex cases which are harder to identify, making false positives more likely. In short, we're running out of typos, which has to be a good thing. Helping out here involves reading the instructions carefully enough to install a script, so it's unlikely that inexperienced editors will do accidental damage. Certes (talk) 13:26, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
- Looks like I got that last sentence wrong: see Wikipedia talk:Correct typos in one click#This tool is introducing typos. Another factor is that each new page of 250 typos gets reduced to only the difficult cases, which are more likely to need a correction other than that suggested or to be correct already. Working through such a page of leftovers can be tricky and may lead to more errors than usual. Certes (talk) 08:36, 17 May 2022 (UTC)

SilkTork, the tool mentions the case where the automatic offer is not right: "Type: if the offered replacement isn't accurate, you can type the right replacement". To anyone using the tool it is obvious the automatic offers are far from being accurate in high percentage. The tool is intentionally not making any automatic edits, every edit is done by human editors and its their responsibility to make sure they make accurate edits. Uziel302 (talk) 07:17, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for that Uziel. Is there no means for users to feed back to you instances of false reports of typos? I've not used your tool - does it footnote certain words that can be false positives to alert users to check more carefully? SilkTorkAway (talk) 08:31, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
- SilkTorkAway, every word that a user marks as right by using the remove button won't appear again in the project, it is saved to the edit history and I use the edit history to filter false positives. Uziel302 (talk) 08:37, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks for that Uziel - it appears you have it under control. Would you put some of this information in the documentation so that others are reassured about what is happening, and so you won't get bothered again with the same questions. SilkTork (talk) 10:40, 8 March 2022 (UTC)

Hello,
I'm not sure how active the CTIOC project is from a development point of view but, if you are looking for improvements, I would like to suggest one.
I have noticed recently that many false positives are caused by highly specific words unique to that article, such as a chemistry term or company name. The vast majority of the time, the 'typo' appears in the articles title.
Would it be possible to prevent marking a word as a typo if it is contained within the title of the article?
Regards — rbstrachan (talk) 00:10, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
- rbstrachan, it is possible and was suggested in the past, but I decided to keep this type of words, because in many cases the name from the title is missing capitalization in the article. I know there are some multiword titles where you can find the word in lowercase in the title itself, but those cases are relatively rare in the project. In general, my approach is to treat less edge cases in the code and have more data, and by dismissing a word that appeared in the title, this word won't come up in next scans even if it appears in other articles. Anyway, thanks for the offer. I am thinking about creating additional data points to help deciding what is a typo, e.g. getting google search count, the existence of the word on Wiktionary, the existence in article names, etc. but for now I don't have the time for it. Uziel302 (talk) 03:04, 8 August 2022 (UTC)
- Ah, yes, you're right I never thought about that. Thanks for taking the time to get back to me, I appreciate it. I look forward to future improvements!Good luck with your projects :) — rbstrachan (talk) 12:05, 8 August 2022 (UTC)

[edit]Your tool is very useful, thanks for making it. But I don't think the tool should include results from inside quotes as quotes should not be edited to fix errors. Roostery123 (talk) 02:55, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
- @User:Roostery123, the code excludes some types of quotes, but in Wikipedia there are many types, can you give an example of the quotes you talk about? Uziel302 (talk) 03:14, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
- I reverted the edit after I realized my mistake.
- [3] Roostery123 (talk) 03:22, 19 October 2022 (UTC)
- This change will fix it, the line I removed there was getting context out of quotes once there is a newline. As your example shows, some quotes take effect even after newline. Uziel302 (talk) 07:18, 2 November 2022 (UTC)

[edit]@Uziel302: I'm really interested in tech as well, being a software architect, but I don't go around creating advertising brochure articles for small private startups that have no right to be on Wikipedia. Why do you do it, particularly since its against Wikipedia Terms of Use that explicitly states that advertising is not allowed. scope_creepTalk 09:31, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
- Tech is a wide range, I am interested in Israeli companies among other things, and the details in the articles are based on public sources that happen to be positive. Uziel302 (talk) 09:35, 6 December 2022 (UTC)
- They are the worst type of brochure articles, hence the reason I sent two of them to Afd. They are advertisements. Those public sources are just the routine coverage, most of which is generated from the company itself, because it a startup and before it existed, nobody knew anything about, so its all self-generated. I would advise you not to create these types of articles. They have no place on Wikipedia. Keep it off Wikipedia. When you say your interested in it, fair enough, but Wikipedia is not place for them unless it is a public company. A private company needs to have really wide coverage that satisfies WP:SIRS before it can considered notable. I sincerly hope you follow my advice. scope_creepTalk 09:52, 6 December 2022 (UTC)

CTIOC
[edit]Hi Asaf. Just letting you know that I really appreciate your "Correct a typo in one click" tool. I used to correct typos manually, and it was painful.
Suggestion: I wouldn't object to more context per flagged error, say a dozen more words before the error and a dozen after. Frequently I have to jump to the article page in question to be sure I'm making the correct correction (so to speak), because the provided context isn't sufficient.
Thanks again for your hard work! -- Doktor Züm (talk) 07:20, 9 January 2023 (UTC)
CTIOC again.
[edit]Some feedback: Just had a look at the toolforge page. This is what I see. Because I don't know how the page normally looks, it's not helpful in its present form. Cheers. -- Doktor Züm (talk) 07:37, 9 January 2023 (UTC)
It is because we currently have no new typos imported to that tool. I am aware of it. I have plans to expand the project and fill it with additional languages and sister projects, but for now I am too busy at work. Uziel302 (talk) 09:42, 9 January 2023 (UTC)

CTIOC page looks broken
[edit]Hi again. This is what it currently looks like.
Earlier today there were several dozen articles in each of the 20 columns. Now some are reset back to 250; fair enough. But some are empty; I've emptied a few columns in my time, and you can't empty them all that fast! And one column seems to have 495 articles, which just seems wrong. Cheers. -- Doktor Züm (talk) 07:51, 9 January 2023 (UTC)
- I moved all the remains from the lists to the last two lists, to make room for new lists. That will be all for now, until I get another scan done. Uziel302 (talk) 09:45, 9 January 2023 (UTC)
- Doktor Züm, forgot to tag. Uziel302 (talk) 09:45, 9 January 2023 (UTC)

Pages transcluding nonexistent sections
[edit]Hi, I have been cleaning up Category:Pages transcluding nonexistent sections and noticed that your javascript page is showing up in the category. This is because the backend software is parsing the curly braces as templates. An easy way to fix this is to put
// <nowiki>
at the top of your script, and
// </nowiki>
at the bottom of your script. This won't impact the functionality, since they are in javascript comments, but will remove the pages from Category:Pages transcluding nonexistent sections. Thanks in advance for your help! Plastikspork ―Œ(talk) 15:28, 25 March 2023 (UTC)

Adapting "Correct a typo in one click" for another language
[edit]There is an Esperanto-related hackathon coming up in a couple weeks: July 18th to 26th. In case it's not too late to suggest a project, I was thinking of proposing that it focus on the improvement of the Esperanto Wikipedia (Vikipedio). Spelling correction is one possibility. Given enough developers, there might be others.
Here are some resources I've come across that might be helpful for adapting "Correct a typo in one click" (WP:CTIOC) to another language.
- The source code at systematic-editing repo
- The JS that was until recently at Wikipedia:Correct_typos_in_one_click
- wikitech::Help:Toolforge/Quickstart
Are there any other resources or advice to consider? Is there a repo with the code that WP:CTIOC uses to read in Wiktionary and any other data?
BTW, it looks like WP:CTIOC mutates known words to find candidate misspellings. Almost all words in Esperanto are formed by combining roots with each other, and adding affixes (prefixes, infixes, and suffixes). The reverse process---starting with a word and stripping off the affixes to uncover the roots is usually called word segmentation---could be used as a signal to check whether a word might be misspelled.
Thanks!
Dotyoyo (talk) 06:21, 29 June 2023 (UTC)
- Dotyoyo, thanks for the offer, adding new language is quite simple in my setup, but it can be complicated for me to teach others how to do so. I currently don't use Wiktionary to generate the list of popular words, but this project: https://github.com/IlyaSemenov/wikipedia-word-frequency/ and it currently doesn't have Esperanto in it, so if someone in the hackathon or regardless can generate list according to this project's technique, I would be glad to run a scan like I did with the languages currently in the project (en, ru, de, fr, es), I wanted to do the whole list of 20 the project currently have but got distracted by work... - Are you sure Toolforge has a time limit? I've run a script that srapes the whole enwiki dump for links, which takes 4-5 days to run, and it hasn't had any issues. — Qwerfjkltalk 20:33, 14 February 2024 (UTC)

Source code for the typos app
[edit]Hi, thanks for https://typos.toolforge.org ! I admire the UI, I find it a particularly productive interface for batches of small edits. I’d like to make a tool with a similar interface (for fixing pronunciations in the French Wiktionary). I wondered if your source code was public?
I would also have a feature suggestion (that may be a lot of work, I don’t know, but let’s throw the idea): a fair share of the typos found are located in file names (hosted on Commons), such as [[File:Abkhaz latin alpabet from 1930 ABC book.png]]
("alpabet" --> "alphabet"). We can’t just fix the typo in the page because that would break the link, rather we should rename the file on Commons (with a redirect); then we can fix the links to it. Do you think your tool could do that? Or else, avoid signaling errors in this File:...
pattern (which varies depending on language, e.g. on the French WP it is Fichier:...
). Maëlan 18:30, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Sure:
- I am currently very busy at work and can't invest in improvements, but the code is available for you to explore... Uziel302 (talk) 19:14, 21 November 2023 (UTC)
- Maëlan, I changed the code that excludes files from using '[File' to using '[[' and ':', so that files in any language will be excluded from my scans, as of building mechanism to fix those, it is out of scope for me. Source code commit. Uziel302 (talk) 06:08, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
- That’s great, thank you! Maëlan 12:38, 2 December 2023 (UTC)

"dismiss" always?
[edit]Hello, thanks for developing the typo tool as a Toolforge tool! I just tried it out on the German Wikipedia, and my first two suggestions were "abgeweht" in de:Buchdrucker (Käfer) and "abgewürzt" in de:Kriminalroman. These are (at least morphologically) correct German words, so I wonder whether there could be an option to skip all of their occurrences? (Potentially on some sort of config page to avoid abuse etc.) 1234qwer1234qwer4 17:27, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- @1234qwer1234qwer4, these words and most other words in German Wikipedia suspects list appear only once, if you click dismiss instead of skip, I will know not to include these words on the next scan. Uziel302 (talk) 17:37, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks, good to know. I just wonder what difference the other two dismiss buttons make in that case? (Also, looking further, it does seem like the majority of the suggested typos are correct words or word forms, and some are certainly occasionalisms, but there is a decent number of subjunctive forms that do not appear to be being recognised; though I don't know whether there is any more complete (and reliable) list of German words out there.) 1234qwer1234qwer4 17:43, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
- 1234qwer, the list of words I used is based on wikipedia-word-frequency, so words like "abgeweht" that appear in de.wikipedia only 3 times, are considered suspicious. I can lower the bar and scan only for words that appear less than that, but then I will miss many repeating typos...
- The different dismiss buttons are used for my future scans, if a word is dismissed as "only here", I can still scan for it in other articles, and the difference between foreign and name is mainly to give me some insights, and sometimes tweak the code (for now I skip lines with more than one suspect words because it might be caused by a foreign language line). Uziel302 (talk) 06:20, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
- Makes sense, thank you. I think the bar should be able to stay as is for now. 1234qwer1234qwer4 13:35, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
https://typos.toolforge.org/ and files
[edit]Hello Uziel, first thank you for your script, however some users modified typos in file name. Consequence, the picture is no more display. [4] [5] Are you able to ignore the typo in files ? or to point towards commons to rename the file ? thank you. Sisyph (talk) 09:29, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
- Sisyph, thanks for the feedback, I already had in the code exclusion of '[[File:' but now I learned that French has different way to write it, so I made the exclusion in the script to be based on '[[' that is followed by ':' on the same line, I ran a new scan on French Wikipedia, excluding all the lines with this format. Uziel302 (talk) 06:28, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you Uziel, it seems much better, only one false positive seen [6]. (Image is an alternative name for Fichier) Could check why ? Thank you again. --Sisyph (talk) 10:13, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
- (I’m not the author of the program.) The program does not detect this case because there is a space in-between
[[
and:
(the code in this example is[[Image : file name.jpg]]
, which apparently is accepted). Maëlan 11:45, 4 December 2023 (UTC)

Correct a typo in one click
[edit]Hi. Your tool is GREAT ! we used it extensively on french wikipedia these last days and have been able to correct a huuuuuuge quantity of typos. Thanks for creating that !
One remark : I agree with @Sisyph in section above : maybe it would be useful to exclude picture file names : if the typo is in the file name and if we correct it, the link beetwen article and image is broken (I'm sure, I broke myself some...)
One question : how can we know that you have issued a new dump with fresh typos to correct ?
Thanks again. Croquemort Nestor (talk) 08:00, 24 November 2023 (UTC)
- Croquemort Nestor, I just have issued a new dump with fresh typos to correct.
- This new dumps should exclude all file name, let me know if I missed something. Uziel302 (talk) 06:29, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
- Did'nt meet any file name. Thanks for the change. Croquemort Nestor (talk) 06:16, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
- Congrat Uziel302 ! This is a very useful and easy to use tool (also tested on fr.wiki). As already said, a notification when a new dump is available would be perfect. Mats01 (talk) 09:51, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
- A subpage with a list of updates or even just a timestamp of the latest update would be useful, because editors could watchlist it to be notified when a new update occurs. Certes (talk) 13:32, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
- Hi. It's never too late to say "happy new yar" so I say "happy new year" to you
- Do you plan to issue a new dump in january ?
Croquemort Nestor (talk) 09:18, 18 January 2024 (UTC)- Croquemort Nestor, just uploaded new batch of French wikipedia, 5000+ suspect words. Thanks for your reminder. Uziel302 (talk) 21:57, 19 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hello ! what about a new dum on fr-wiki to celebrate Feb 29 ? ;‑) Croquemort Nestor (talk) 15:04, 27 February 2024 (UTC)

Correct typos in one click
[edit]Hi, I was partially inspired by your tool to create this tool for creating suggested redirects, if you're interested. The source code is at gitlab:toolforge-repos/missingredirectsproject. — Qwerfjkltalk 18:32, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
- Great job! Thanks for sharing Uziel302 (talk) 18:40, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you: that looks very useful. I wonder whether it would be worth considering an option to move the page (leaving a redirect), if the proposed redirect is actually a better title than the current one. However, it might cause problems if editors don't see and heed the usual post-move encouragement to check Wikidata, non-free rationales, double redirects and other such complications. Certes (talk) 19:28, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
- Where do the suggestions come from? I'm getting
President of theUniversity of Georgia → University of Georgia
, which seems odd. There are no incoming links to the proposed redirect, either with or without a space after "the". Certes (talk) 20:15, 14 February 2024 (UTC)- Certes, I could add a link to the move page. The suggestions come from links and their text (details here). (If you want to discuss this further I'd suggest moving this to my talk page, to avoid unnecessarily pining Uziel.) — Qwerfjkltalk 20:32, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
Correct typos in one click
[edit]Hiya, cool tool! Where can we find the source code? And how do you create the lists of typos (it is possible that the answer to my previous question also answers this one)? Polygnotus (talk) 23:35, 9 March 2024 (UTC)
- @Polygnotus, https://github.com/Uziel302/systematic-editing
- Creating the lists requires running some scripts:
- 0 get file of the relevant language from this project: https://github.com/IlyaSemenov/wikipedia-word-frequency/tree/master/results
- 1 adjust this script to work with the relevant language, and run https://github.com/Uziel302/systematic-editing/blob/main/parsers/variant-generator.py
- 2 adjust https://github.com/Uziel302/systematic-editing/blob/main/parsers/find-words-in-dump.py to work with previous files (variants, word frequency and a dump).
- Let me know if you have specific questions. Uziel302 (talk) 01:30, 10 March 2024 (UTC)
Website error
[edit]At typos.toolforge.org the /about and /stats pages are not working. Also, when you switch from one Wiki that has all the typos handled to another Wiki that doesn't, the text "All the typos were handled! We try to generate new batch once a month" goes from being inside the div "container" to to the div "typo-container" and it so renders very large, but I can correct typos just fine. Rusty talk contribs 15:22, 16 June 2024 (UTC)
- Rusty, can you be more specific, what doesn't work in those pages? For me both /about and /stats have content. I noticed a bug with those pages when I reload, I get error "Cannot GET /about". I usually solve this problem using .htaccess file, but seems like in this toolforge environment, this file doesn't take effect. So far no one complained about it and I never noticed it, probably because I never did reload on these paths. As for the other bug, I see it and added it to my tasks list, but currently I don't have time to solve it. Thanks for the bug reports. Uziel302 (talk) 09:39, 17 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Uziel302: Yeah, I was talking about "Cannot GET /about". Because I was correcting typos in Spanish Wikipedia and I clicked on the /about link, and it could not GET the webpage. Rusty talk contribs 14:17, 17 June 2024 (UTC)

Do you know how I would go about repurposing this for a different task - e.g. fixing CheckWiki errors? — Qwerfjkltalk 15:39, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
- You can copy some code from the source of the project:
- I am not sure what else can I give in this context. Uziel302 (talk) 16:11, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
- Apologies if I wasn't clear. I'm asking which part of the code is specific to typos, and would therefore need to be modified? — Qwerfjkltalk 20:22, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Qwerfjkl, the code is taking replacements from db, table named suspects, and tries to replace in the article the value from column suspect and the value from column correction. For that matter, suspect and correction can be any textual change possible in source code editing, not necessarily typos. The part that helps me generate the lists of suspect lives inside "parsers" folder, variant-generator.py helps create lists of potential suspect words, find-words-in-dump.py finds those words in a wiki dump.
