Babel userboxes

[edit]

Hello, Tom9358,

Please do not overuse Babel userboxes for languages. The intention of these userboxes is not to list every single language that you may and may not be familiar with but to list those you are proficient in so that you might help with translating work on the project. Due to your listing of extra userboxes, our bot created 10 extra user categories just so you could be listed in them (see Special:Contributions/Babel AutoCreate). As you have only made 36 edits over 12 years you have had an account, I don't think it's likely that you will be translating articles from other language Wikipedias so please do not add any more language boxes to your User page expecially for obscure languages that you don't actually speak or work in.

If you have any questions about editing on the project, userboxes or User pages, please bring them to the Teahouse. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 20:04, 20 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for informing me, Liz! Of course you are right that I will not (be able to) translate Wikipedia into those languages. With these languages, I doubt that many people will. Adding those was not a joke and the languages are deeply meaningful to me as a linguist - they're not obscure to me in any case! I have at keast some knowledge of each language that I listed. Especially Leti (lti) I think deserves a mention on my page, since although I cannot speak it at all, I do know a bit about the grammar and phonology, and some vocabulary. I thought it would be nice to add them, so that other people will be able to find me in the future. Again, it wasn't my intention to troll, only to have these languages mentioned somewhere on the internet, so I can be found when people are looking for information.
