ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:36, 19 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for the Spoon information. I didn’t realise the Strikers got the spoon this year. Is this their first? Servite et contribuere (talk) 12:01, 27 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Flags

[edit]

Hi.

When you've replaced the flags in squad tables on the last two BBL seasons you've quoted MOS:FLAGS as Flag icons may be relevant in some subject areas, where the subject actually represents that country or nationality – such as military units or national sports teams. In lists or tables, flag icons may be relevant when such representation of different subjects is pertinent to the purpose of the list or table itself.

Now, to my mind, that's exactly why I removed the flags! In this case these people are not "represent[ing] that country or nationality – such as military units or national sports teams" (my emphasis). And I don't think their nationality is "pertinent to the purpose of the list or table itself". To my mind, these are just players at this point. I can live with the enclosing of the standard {{cr template in the draft table and these, of course, have a place in the individual season articles for each team or on the team page – as they seem to be being used. But a flag – and in particular a flag by itself – in these tables is unnecessary.

If there were an abbreviation of the country (ENG, say) with a link to the cricket team, I'd be happier, although I'm still unconvinced that it's needed, but that doesn't need a flag. As you can see, including the full name of the country causes problems.

But I'd be interested to hear your views on this. I'll watch here for a week, but after that you'll need to catch my attention some other way.

As you can see, I've removed the * from the stats tables. It's unnecessarily confusing to a reader who may not know what it means. And we have plenty of space to show not out in full now. Blue Square Thing (talk) 13:58, 28 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
I would prefer * because it looks neater than not out, the matches high score is done in that way, so the reader will still require that knowledge, and * is wiki-linked for readers. This is also the default for most stats pages.
As for flags on players, I can compromise on a marker for international players. This would be useful to understand the international-domestic balance, and the team they represent could be looked up from the player name. Techie3 (talk) 14:51, 28 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I understand that * is more subtle and less obvious to those who do not know the sport notation, but I personally like its neatness and think that the audience for the stats page is very likely to understand that notation. If desired by the editors, I can change the stats page of other leagues to write not out instead of *. Techie3 (talk) 15:21, 28 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think when space is at a premium, * is better to use. When we have space, however, I think we should be using not out to help non-specialists (it particularly annoys me when * is used in prose – that's just thoughtless, but there you go).
There's lots of work that needs to be done on this sort of thing anyway – there are far too many examples of stats tables simply being copied from CricInfo with very little regard for the needs on the pages we're creating here. I'm of the view that we can reasonably highlight things like total runs, highest scores, total wickets, best bowling etc..., but if the stats go much beyond that I think we have issues. Many of the early BBL season articles, for example, have far too detailed stats tables with strike rates and so on being included. To my mind, less is more – more readable for starters. And less likely to be viewed as a copyright infringement for that matter. Trimming stats means we have room to use not out met of the time as well...
I'd be interested to see how you'd trim stats tables from the earlier seasons Blue Square Thing (talk) 18:42, 28 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
